In the Emmy Award-winning miniseries Lonesome Dove, the character of Josh Deets (Danny Glover), a scout and fellow cattleman to Woodrow Call (Tommy Lee Jones) and Augustus McCrae (Robert Duvall), meets a shocking death before the eyes of his friends. Call states his feelings to Deets in a carved epitaph on his grave.
Call also knelt down by Deets's body. He could not get over his surprise. Though he had seen hundreds of surprising things in battle, this was the most shocking. An Indian boy who probably hadn't been fifteen years old had run up to Deets and killed him. It must have shocked Augustus just as much, because he didn't have anything to say.

I think Call's relationship with Deets is apparent when he delivers the eulogy. Anybody who says Call doesn't have any emotions hasn't seen that scene.

Lonesome Dove is a 1985 Western novel by American writer Larry McMurtry. It is the first published book of the Lonesome Dove series and the third installment in the series chronologically. It was a bestseller and won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In 1989, it was adapted as a TV miniseries starring Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall, which won both critical and popular acclaim. McMurtry went on to write a sequel, Streets of Laredo (1993), and two prequels, Dead Man's Walk (1995) and Comanche Moon (1997), all of which were also adapted as TV series. This six-hour miniseries, based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Larry McMurtry, revitalized both the miniseries and Western genres, both of which had been considered dead for several years. Lonesome Dove earned 18 Emmy nominations and inspired a pair of miniseries sequels as well as two attempts at an ongoing television series.

1883 is a shameless cheap knockoff of Lonesome Dove. Sheridan has zero understanding of this setting and genre, it's nothing more than a fashion statement to him.
