3 Great English Melodeon Tunes

- A real treat from JIMBO playing three great tunes - 'May Reel' Paul Sartin - 'Time will End' (J.McLane) from the playing of the RANDOM Band and finally the 'Bacca Pipes Jig' and proving like other melodeon legends like Saul Rose that having a few beers sometimes does not stop you getting into the "Melodeon Zone"
Played on a battered Saltarelle DG Connemara 3 Melodeon @ 1am in the morning after 10 pints of real ale :-) Enjoy! ... Derek

Ah the hour when true music manifests in our World!
I’ve listened to this loads of times over about 5 years, whenever I need cheering up! What a brilliant musician. Thank you loads.
I'm so fucking glad i discovered English and Irish folk music-or at least decided to explore it, they're two fantastic genres!
My all time favourite clip on UA-cam. How this cannot bring a smile to anyone's face and a tingle of the spine, I do not know. Awesome.
Brilliant! Best bit is the gap with reverb near to the end! Real feeling and exciting syncopation. Well done!!
this video made me get a melodeon
there is something special about diatonics - they add so much more lift to a tune. PAs are either loud or quiet, but melodeons seem to be able to manage both at the same time
If you play it hard enough!
and i would kill to play like that.
unbelievable! so good.
I keep coming back to this video. It is GREAT!! I love May Reel. Tried playing it at Andover Folk Club this evening.
'May Reel' was actually written by the late much lamented Paul Sartin and his fiddle version (with Paul Hutchinson on piano accordion) can be found on the 'Belshazzar's Feast' album 'Drop the Reed'.
Thank you for the info , and I’ll update the description to reflect this. I (and Jimbo) learnt it from my good friend Saul Rose when he was playing it in Faustus around 2006/2008 ( it’s on their first cut album) and Paul was a great friend too.

Yes, I noticed after posting that other videos name check Faustus as being the source of the tune. I will now check out their version which I imagine was the inspiration for the many melodeon versions on UA-cam.
Cheers.
This is top class
Love this!
It could have been more than 10 pints .. it was a new years eve , after 1 am ... i (DTN) had drunk the same and could barely get a scale out of the box! ... Jimbo is a freak i reckon .. he just enters another zone where the melodeon playing still works... i fail after about 5 pints! DTN
gave me the shivers and makes me grin from ear to ear every time i watch this.brilliant.thanks.
So love this! I admire the playing skills and the drinking skills, combining the two is pure genius! Bacca Pipes is one of my favourite Morris tunes. Fab! Love and peace.
Time Will End is my favorite. Thanks for this!
one of the best box squeezers i know. nuff said
Mary Lydia Who is he?
Edvin Aronson He is Jimbo!
May Reel is just a thing of total beauty.
Thx Andy , it’s a great set of tunes!
As you say.
I would pay money to see that.
I just absolutely love this video, I come back to it so many times. Just love that sound!
superb playing never heard better takes the melodeon to a new level bass timing ornaments just everyone is SUPERB
Superb playing !!! I really enjoyed this clip. Thanks for posting and looking out for new stuff.
Pure genius! Love this rendition, thank you for sharing this! Love and peace.
Just joyfull.
I do really enjoy listening to this although been around for a long time thanks for playing/sharing it
As said before absolutely amazing!
Really beautiful
Smashed it pal! Up the english
Great playing!
Thats Jimbo playing my battered old Saltarelle Connemara III
Great punchy stuff!
These tunes play in my head now, I’ve listened to them so much! I’m trying to learn them, are your boxes D/G? Thanks, Helen 🪗😎
FUN! FUN! FUN! It doesn't matter if it's 1am, you've got to play when you want to. It iches in my fingers at the most awkward times but i've got to keep the "noise" down after 22:00. :( Anyway i liked what you played.....great stuff! I'll try to get that tune in my head and have a go at it. Thanks for posting.
Very Nice !!!
Brilliant
Amaizing!!
thats some pretty bright sunlight for 1am!
THE MAN WAS IN THE ZONE!!!
Genius. Enough said.
Jimbo - what a fantastic way to start the new year - so far have only heard you playing with DTN on the excellent duets you did - I don't know any of the tunes you are playing but very clear you are making a lot more of them than the dots would indicate -if you do ever post the tabs then very interested but great playing and thanks-
All the best NIgel
Amazing!
Still amazing!
Still amazing!
Totally awesome! When's the first gig of 2021? I WILL be there! Love and peace.
Revisited. Yet again.
super
yea awesome kind regards Andy box player from Bury
Whey hey! Come and play here in Northern Italy! They don't reckon we've got decent food, or decent box players in England and as I'm feeling a bit homesick even after 5 years I'd love to have some immoral support (epecially at 2.30 in the morning)! I nearly joined in with keyless flute and bones but I've lost me lip. :-)

Woah... hats off to that man - beer makes my playing pretty tricky! Absolutely great tunes too - I was expectiing a few slip ups with that amount of beer in the blood but all the wonderful twiddles and stops were in there - left hand is mesmerising! I reckon you were in the Good Intent session at this year's Rochester Sweeps fest, shame you didn't play much there! Do you, DTN and Jimbo both play with Hook Eagle Morris?
@dwaynedibbly .... errr no! .. it was in the morning and we both had the hangover to prove it .... wall lights! .. and note its actyually dark through the window at the back! DTN
@melonbiggs Hook Eagle ... Yes we do! :-)
How do you count this? what is the time signature? Great tune, bud.
The original middle tune at w w w jeremiahmclane . com is also a stunning piece!!
Don't this either of us know where to find Tabs or use them im afraid
I don't know if you've got your melodeon yet. If not and you still want to go for it I suggest you buy a DG and find your nearest morris side. There is bound to be someone to get you going. And yes, they are a great instrument that sounds good from the off.
suspiciously tight for being played after ten pints. but fair play to you!
Been there, well not quite 10, but I reached a point at 4 or so when I couldn't play a note got to 6 and was OK again
were you or jimbo at DERT this year?
and how long have you two been playing?
I'm currently debating in my head if i should ask my parents for a melodeon for christmas. my dad said at one point he'd have a serious think about it but i'm wondering how easy are they to learn to play things on?
well, did you end up getting one?
um DTN.. what box is that?
Excellent playing, but where were you at 1am when there is sunlight streaming through the window?
I think the modern miracle of electricity might have something to do with the brightness.
Playing quietly so as not to disturb the neighbors?
ok ignore the Q.. if I'd watched the whole vid.. saterelle connemara 3
If you have the 'want' to learn it and even a little musical ability ... then its a great instrument that develops quickly ... easily transportable and doesn't need batteries :-)
You would need to have opportunities to play it with others to really get stuck in .. but remember the Diatonic Melodeon is in fixed keys .. i.e a DG box gives D/ G / Am / Em and a basic bit of C and A ... if you need other keys .. its another box .. then you get MAD ' Melodeon Acquisition Disease' cheers Derek
all you need is a beer a joint and a barn dance
