Hope you and yours had time to unwind and relax. I'm doing fine but things are extremely busy...a bit too busy. That is another reason I like to watch your little escapes.
@@LaureninGermany Yes, there is. A bit smaller but much less overrun by tourists. I think it was really built after the model of the French one. There is a small cobble stone road which is under water at high tide. At least, there was a few years ago when I was there. And yes, you need to visit. ;-)

Good thing you got out of Bretagne early enough, I heard the storm was pretty bad there. And it was a rather bold move to park right next to a Versaille gate... but you got away with it, so perhaps the police was busy elsewhere. :) You know, I happen to know quite a bit about the Versailles palace - yet I've never been there. But I once had a computer game that had a simulation of Versailles as the location. Kind of a murder mystery thing. It actually is a rather weird place. Not only because the king and his court yard were weirdos, but there is much more behind the scenes, that people usually don't get to see. As a visitor you get shown around the posh rooms, like the mirror hall where you filmed, and probably the kings bedroom, with the barrier where people had to wait for him and watch how he got out of bed and get dressed and all. As I said, weirdos... :) But there is a whole other part of the palace, that was the home of the servants, and much less posh. There are secret hallways, passages and hidden doors everywhere, so servants didn't need to walk through the fancy rooms during their daily work. May be thats why some people are disappointed because the palace looks bigger from the outside than it is inside, if you can only see the fancy rooms. With the job creation for artists one can have different opinions. Don't forget that the king had basically stolen the money from the population in the first place. And that work was payed with pennies by aristocrats back then, because they felt it was a honor to work for them. This attitude finally ruined the country and was the reason that they had their heads chopped off at the end.
I honestly couldn’t find anywhere else to park. The campsites were closed and mobile homes are not allowed in the main carpark, there is a towing sign. I didn’t know if my van counted as a mobile home. The traffic warden came in the morning and scanned us. She said all is good. (Of course, we paid). But sleeping overnight- I think the police weren’t interested because they knew people needed shelter that night. Yes, behind the scenes is very different in theatres, too. And when I worked for the Hessian State Opera I worked out that I earned 1€ an hour…. So I am under no illusion!
@@LaureninGermany Yes, culture is not in the top of the priority list when it comes to budget planning. And the work space is always a different story. In Versailles the servant area is not really shabby, its just all plain and white, just functional without any ornaments. A stark contrast to the nobilities part. Must have felt strange to work there, so close to all the luxury and still banned from it most of the time. Honestly, I found also the posh rooms quite strange somehow. Apart of the bedroom, the mirror hall and a few more, most rooms appear somehow rather useless. Like, you come into a room, it has all the nice furniture, paintings and ornaments, and you can sit there and look at the stuff. And then you go into the next room - and its just the same! And the next one as well, and so on. Just to be able to say: "My palace has 50 luxurious rooms." I guess. But in reality they are without purpose.
I´m not so sure about them being without purpose. I think the presentation of the king or queen or a royal chamber, having to walk through so many rooms, one exquisite grandeur after another until you are finally there, coupled with the building anticipation have an important effect. If you walk almost straight into the special room, it loses importance. And as a safety mechanism, it simply takes longer to get through all those rooms and doors, and find your target. I personally would hate to be shut away from the luxury, as the servants were. I wonder if they believed the hype - that they were lesser mortals, and undeserving?
@@LaureninGermany Well, if you see showing off as a purpose, then yes. As I said, a "My palace is bigger than your's" things. But I meant purpose as we understand it today. Though, there is a library room in Versailles, if I remember correctly. Anyway, all those "Salons" seem kind of silly. Wel, I dont know if the servants believed they are lesser mortals themselfs. They didn't have much choice, I guss. They could work in the palace or somewhere else - it was all not very good in those days. And in the palace they had something to eat and a place to sleep at least.
Yes, I do see it as a purpose, and thinking about it, even still today. A display of wealth as a display of power. Not in the sense of keeping up with the Joneses, don´t get me wrong. But as for kings, I´d rather they showed what might they possessed in this way, rather than on the battlefield with human lives. Don´t you think they did believe that the kings were actually divine, then? I do think that some folk might, particularly if they were constantly brainwashed.
What a great idea Mt. St. Michel at night in the moon light; realy beautiful. I like the way you always look on the good side of everything. The handicraft in Versailles and the effort but I beg to differ. If you ever make your way to the Loire valley, you'll find out the the castles there are more beautiful than Versailles. Which is my point of view. And just an idea for the new name of your channel, maybe "Lauren in Germany and beyond" All the best to you
Oh then I must go to the Loire valley! Thank you! Do you know, that‘s the very name that I have in my head and only today I was thinking I do need to change it. I‘ve been travelling again, and I really want to share those places, too. Thank you so much for your lovely comment!
Building the Palace of Versailles nowadays would probably be obscene. But it was built by a king in the second half of the 17th Century; judging what happened 350 years ago by modern moral standards makes no sense, you saw it through the right lense. And you were right indeed to visit it at this time of year, even if the gardens are naturally not as beautiful; the incredible crowds and lines during the peak touristic seasons completely ruin the experience. By the way, Mont St-Michel is in Normandy - by a very short distance, as the small river (the Couësnon) that flows into the sea at its western foot marks the "border" between Normandy and Brittany. Saint-Malo, that storm Ciaran unfortunately made you miss, is in Brittany; this town also is a must-see. Both places are also to be seen outside peak seasons to avoid armies of tourists.
Yes, I know that Mont St-Michel is in Normandy, there is a sweet sign showing the arguement over it, and with the words "but above all in Europe". And absolutely, it was already more than busy enough for me. I was happy that there were not more crowds. ANd everyone is more relaxed. I only needed to wait for under ten minutes to get into the Palace.

It's pretty consistently a cause of embarrassment for me just how ignorant the average American is about just how much of France does _not_ look like _Paris._ We tend to associate France with Paris in much the same way that we associate Germany with _Bavaria._
Ah, I did not know that about France. Yes, the Germany is Bavaria is Germany thing drives me mad in that I feel people don’t want to know about the rest of Germany. And it has so much to offer and fall in love with!
@@LaureninGermany Come on, Lauren! Cardiff, Canterbury, Plymouth, Birmingham, Manchester, York, Newcastle, Glasgow, Aberdeen. What do these cities have in common? They are very distinctively *not* like London. ;-) So, why should France be different? Now that you have the flexibility of your van, put southern France on your list. From the Maritime Alps to the Provence, from Avignon to Arles at the entrance to the Carmargue, from Nîmes with it's ancient Roman ruins and the Pont du Gard just a few km north to Narbonne and Carcassonne with their unique and dark history, or from Toulouse to Lourdes and the wilderness of the Pyrenees. They are all very distinctively different in culture, language, weather, and landscape from the western coast or the northern flatlands and a different universe from the Parisian egocentrism. Enjoy! ;-)
@@mogon721I meant that the Americans think that Paris is representative of France in general, of course! I would poke you in the ribs if you were here!
France is about the same size as Texas. Going to Paris and pretending you've see France would be like going to Dallas and pretend you've seen that state. As a Frenchman who lives near the German border I've visited our neighbors more than once; though I do love Bavaria (considering going back there next summer), there's indeed much more to see in Germany.

@@LaureninGermany You're simply the best! ❤️
And just an idea for the new name of your channel, maybe "Lauren in Germany and beyond"
All the best to you
Oh then I must go to the Loire valley! Thank you!
Do you know, that‘s the very name that I have in my head and only today I was thinking I do need to change it. I‘ve been travelling again, and I really want to share those places, too.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment!
Ohje! Das habe ich auf Rømø gemacht. Sowas vergisst man nie…

@@sisuguillam5109ja, Nordseeliebe macht wetterfest! Aber dies war nicht lustig. Ich hatte richtig Glück.
Dir auch einen schönen Sonntag, my dearest Sisu!
Me rewatching to spot the name of the Restaurant in Versailles so I can tell my vegitarian sister about it... 😊
Positive Cafe 🙂
I thought you are always nicely tolerant! Your sister would love it there- you, too! I had dessert but I think I cut it out of the video in embarrassment at my gluttony! It was such a treat and the staff and clientele were so nice.
@@LaureninGermany Never be afraid to show when you enjoy your food!
Have found them online and made some screenshots!
@@sisuguillam5109are you planning a visit? It’s so sweet there, all within easy walking distance. Which makes up for the hikes around the Palace and gardens 😂
@@LaureninGermany Not really... but my sister loves Paris and France (and is getting married soon!!!!). This looks like the perfect place for a romantic getaway!
I would avoid Paris like the plague. There were so many rats, Sisu. We left, even though we had somewhere super to sleep. You´re right, Versailles is lovely, just so pretty and relaxed for wandering around, but plenty to see and do. And friendly!
Queen of Ostfriesland?Empress of Ostfriesland more like!
I like your way of thinking! And you must be Divine Sovereign of the Baseball Bat!
@@LaureninGermany Oh, thank you! Glad to join your court!
@@sisuguillam5109I see you as head of a neighbouring nation. Kind of like Boris and Biden. No! Strike that….
@@LaureninGermany I am most definitly friendly!
😁
And I might be a tad smarter than BoJo.
Too european to be Biden.
Maria von Jever without the ghost story maybe?
@@sisuguillam5109now you see, I knew I shouldn’t have ventured into the political realm with you! Who is Maria von Jever? 🤦🏻♀️ (in agreement about the rest, except I think BoJo is evil rather than stupid)
If I go that way, will I die?
Yes, that's also always the first question I ask police in a neighboring country. The second one is, can I park here? ;-)
Ikr?! 😂 But the water was literally lapping at my feet and I couldn’t work out a better way to ask in French…!
"Roaming Lauren" coming?
I was thinking Lauren’s escapes… but I just don’t know…!
Oh no, not another hot spot channel, please discover those little wonders as you did in the past!@@LaureninGermany
Of course not! It wouldn´t be my kind of escape then - but it´s good to know what that makes someone think of. Probably the wrong name, thanks!
Yes, what Klaus says! 👍🏻

"I'm a land-rat" - Landlubber, you Landratte.
OMG! I´m such a Denglish-Speaker, now! How funny!!!
