In the mid 70s i worked for company setting up the corporate village at the back of the outside courts,one day whilst having our lunch break on the grass beside a court, Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors came onto court beside us and proceeded to have a practise session,all the time they were playing they were chatting and joking with us,until towards the end they asked me and my mate to join them for a fun session in which i partnered mr connors ,we played for around 10mins and my claim to fame is that Chris Evert served to me and i never saw the ball as it flew by me .
I get the feeling things used to be more relaxed at Wimbledon. When I went there a few years ago you couldn't move for security guards.
I was lucky enough to get Centre Court tickets for Ladies' Final day three years ago. But much better than seeing Serena Williams not on her best form, was the conclusion of the Mens' Singles semi-final that was suspended the previous evening, between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, which was a fantastic match, very exciting.
We had my brothers girl friend on for years telling her that ball boy duty was like jury duty! we even made a fake letter and posted it to her saying she had been called up 🤣

There used to be a number of 'reserved' tickets for the main courts [standing] to be sold on the day. These are what people would queue up for. There were also 'cheap' [£10] ground tickets only available on the day.... last there in 1995
I've been very fortunate to have visited Wimbledon many times from the age of 11 and it's always an amazing experience. Would highly recommend getting a simple ground pass on the first few days of the tournament. You can wander around all the outside courts and get to see some big names, almost within touching distance in some cases. You really don't get the same experience sitting at the back on the show courts.
I went to Wimbledon in about 2010 (not sure, to be honest!). Centre Court tickets are SO hard to get but we were lucky that year! It was hot and sunny all day. I watched Andy Murray, the Divine Williams sisters, and (swoon) MR Cool himself, Roger Federer and i can honestly say (as a huge tennis fan at the time) that it was one of the best days of my life! Thanks for reminding me of that magical experience!
It is not ONE of the premier championships - it is the oldest in the world and the most prestigious.

I’ve just got back from Wimbledon today!!! Was lucky enough to get Centre court tickets and watched the women’s semis and the mixed doubles semis. Was a dream come true! The atmosphere was AMAZING. the strawberries and cream and Pimms were sooo yummy. The museum was also really Interesting. As you said the grounds are beautiful and spotless and you a feel a real sense of history, tradition and Englishness all around. Sorry I missed you, I would have totally asked to be In Your video 🤣
Thank you for this posting. I live just a few miles south of Wimbledon, but have never been to see the tennis - having little interest in the sport explains that. As a social event it is so interesting and your video is the first time I have seen what it would be like to be present, were I to apply for a ticket. So you have opened a door and allowed me to glimpse into a world I have never entered.
Ask any serious player from any country that if they could win one Major tournament title what one would it be ,and they would all without hesitation say Wimbledon. The oldest and most prestigious of all the tournaments. The only major on grass. There have been many top top tennis pros that have won a major in France, Australia or the US, but all the considered “Greats” have won Wimbledon.

My Grandma was an avid tennis fan. She and my Grandpa were a member of a tennis club which was part of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and each year the club was allocated tickets for their members at reduced rate. Since they lived in North Wales, most people at the club decided they couldnt afford the cost of travelling down and staying in London. So each year my grandparents would get most of the allocated tickets because my Dad is from Wimbledon, my other grandparents still lived in Wimbledon, and we live just a couple of miles outside Wimbledon = free accommodation, free parking and managed to combine seeing the family at the same time, so effectively a free trip as well. When my Grandpa died, Grandma would still get the tickets, but would start taking friends and family along in his place. I was lucky enough to have a trip to No 1 Court and a trip to Centre Court as a result. I would love to go back. I enjoy watching lawn tennis and I very much enjoy the experience of Wimbledon. Maybe one day.
I was lucky enough to get tickets in the ballot a few times. I wasn’t able to go this year because I’m poorly and awaiting surgery, I’m so jealous you’re there this year! There’s nothing like Wimbledon!
I live in Wimbledon about a mile or so from centre court. I usually attend on manic Monday which is the day the round of 16 is played and there are a lot of seeded players on the outer courts, late afternoon it is also possible to get a return ticket for one of the show courts. I managed this in 2009 and saw Andy Murray play a 5 set thriller under the lights on centre court when the roof was used for the first time- match finished at 10:40 pm
Good on you, Kim, we tennis people are jealous! (I went to high school next to Kooyong and saw many grass court matches over the years in Melbourne before they moved the Grand Slam to Rod Laver arena and its environs - not Wimbledon, but it was a privilege).

Great video. Different, but really enjoyable. And, yes I like watching tennis and have been to Wimbledon. And like you say - you don’t need to know anything about the sport - to be able to appreciate and enjoy the occasion.
I went in the mid 1990s. I had tickets for Court No. 1, which in those days was an outside court. Now Court 1 is the original Centre Court, and there is a 'new' Centre Court. I enjoy watching grand slam tennis, but Wimbledon with its grass courts is the best. Also, the 'predominately white' clothing rule is part of the atmosphere. I remember when it was 'all white' and no sponsors logos were allowed. So, it it a tiny bit more colourful than it was.
Mea culpa. I got this wrong. The original Centre Court has been extensively modified and enlarged, but it is still the same court. The original No. 1 Court was demolished and replaced by a new court in 1997. It was enlarged and a retractable roof was added in time for the 2019 championships.
I have been to centre court matches many times with fab food prior! But I’m lucky as my daughter works there. Today my husband & other family are in the centre court audience. When did u film this? Not today?
No play on the middle Sunday originally was because nothing happened on Sundays in the UK, and most sporting events weren't allowed. This changed in the 1980's but not at Wimbledon. No play on the middle Sunday is to give the grass a day to recover after the first week of play and using the middle Sunday was only used if too much play had been lost in the first week due to rain. The final day of play including the Men's final used to be played on the Saturday, I think this was changed sometime in the 1990's
I used to make sure I had my two weeks holiday for the tennis two weeks. I love tennis even if I didn't see it live. Although I did go once to Wimbledon the year Arthur Ashe won it. I saw him play on an outside Court along with Billy Jean King in her singles match. It was really hot that year and my Sister felt faint, sat on the floor and Arthur Ashe tripped over her on his way back from winning. Yes he may never have won had his trip been worse. Great to see and brings back lovely memories.
Yes Wimbledon is very traditional but everything looks very new, even the museum. Probably because centre and No 1 court have been rebuilt in recent years. At least they kept the colour scheme.
a lot of it is new and they have plans to build a lot more even another showcourt of 8,000
I was lucky enough to see Andy Murray and a few other big names at Centre Court during the Olympics. Surprised me how small it seemed, as TV cameras make it look a lot bigger.
Oooh, that's awesome! Wimbledon seems like a good venue for the Olympic tennis here - I didn't even think of that, but seems obvious in hindsight.

I saw Watson and Tsonga play at the Olympics. It was an amazing experience seeing the longest tennis match in Olympic history.
I have been on the Wimbledon tour but not been there during the championships - would love to one day.
The main Wimbledon tradition, which is still going strong today, is rain stopping play.
I have been to Wimbledon tennis on quite a few occasions and have always found it a very enjoyable occasion. I think if you look at the ticket the conditions of entry state that all photography is copyright of the club. This to protect the rights of the broadcasters and professional photographers. I don't think you will get into trouble for this but just letting you know.
When I first went in the 80's you would get big crowds round the popular matches on the outside courts and you would be packed in like sardines in a tin. Its all a bit sanitized now with health and safety.

On July 9, 1877, the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club begins its first lawn tennis tournament at Wimbledon - the game was invented here so all the obsession with the tradition not surprising

I've been to Wimbledon once, when I was at school (~25 years ago 🤯), back when Tim Henman was in his early days, although we were on the lower courts so didn't get to see him.

My mother lived in Wimbledon as a child and one of my enduring childhood memories is coming home from school during Wimbledon fortnight and finding her glued to the TV watching the matches. But it never interested me and I don't follow it.

I like you and enjoyed your video. Luckily, I was around in the free and easy days and for £5 in 1977 we were able to be at either 1 or 2 and see Vitas Geruliatis who reached The Semi-Finals. Like almost everything else I did then we just turned up and queued and I know we went from Court to Court but I wished I kept a Diary so I can't be certain but I "think" we ended up at Centre Court. £120 !!! Mind you I saw Pink Floyd for £1 at Earls Cort. Led Zeppelin for 75 PENCE at Wembley Arena and Deep Purple and the next week: Creedence Clearwater Revival at The World Famous: Royal Albert Hall both for 25 PENCE.....
Do you know you can apply for tickets, and your name goes into a draw, the tickets are not all that expensive if you use that route, My wife had all her friends and relatives apply and pass them on to her, she some years was able to go on three or four days, this was over 10 years ago when we lived in the south east.
I was there for the Olympics. I've still got my ticket. OMG I was also gangway 35 on number 1 court.
I also had a tour round a couple years earlier but sadly can't remember much. I know we saw centre court. I have a few photos. I would love to go back and have another tour.
It is also a famous Croquet club :-)
This is a really good video, especially if like me you have never been to Wimbledon (I live a long way from London so it's a bit far for a day trip). Would you be interested in doing something similar on another big sporting occasion, like a race meeting... or even a Test Match? It would be good to have your perspective on it.

I've been a couple of times but with outdoor tickets only. It's a great day out but queueing to get in is a pain. I liked court 18.
I went on a school trip years ago & my friend and I got chatted up by a well known tennis player and his coach. Now I realise how dodge that was.

A very interesting story.
Although living just around the corner from The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club to give it its full name, I have never been inside as always made sure I was away from home during Wimbledon Fortnight as impossible to park outside my house due to temporary parking restrictions in place. Many people made a fortune turning their gardens into temporary car parks during the competition.
The competition was only open to amateur players before becoming open in the mid 60's. I wonder if Croquet is still played there? At least there is no longer a third Monday or Tuesday when it overran due to the weather, the retractable roofs make a big difference although they like to keep them open when possible as it is an open air competition. From next year no middle Sunday rest day to enable the Wheelchair competition to be slotted in more easily.

It's WimbleDon not WimbleTon. Why is that so difficult to pronounce, I get it with Buckingham Palace, cause of the H, but Wimbledon? And, yeah, I live 5 miles from Wimbledon. Been twice.
Great video. Just a tiny thing...one always travels UP to London, whether coming from the north, south, or west. This dates back to the days when people attended the king or queen at Court, so they always went up to Court. As all royal courts since 1066 (Greenwich, Hampton, or currently St James) have been in London, one always goes up to Town. Every other city, one says "going down town". Another idiosyncracy!
Sorry to contradict, but as a proud northerner and regardless of any tradition, I don't travel up to London, I travel down!

Can you get to that 'picnic area/ the big screens', without a ticket?
You do need a grounds ticket to get in (the one that allows you in, but not onto the "show courts" which is Center Court, Court 1, and Court 2). So it isn't a public area, but many people just opt for the cheaper grounds court tickets to watch the matches from that hill, and visitors to Wimbledon during the rest of the year can go on a tour and see it.

You travelled down to Wimbledon from the South East. Really? You just travel to Wimbledon from that direction, there's no down about it. And it is NOT one of the most prestigious, it is THE most prestigious tournament in the world. The US Open isn't even worthy to be mentioned in the same sentence.

I have been to Wimbledon many times. Have been playing the game since I was nine.... Wimbledon is an expenience. COURT 1 is now covered.
and thank goodness Court 1 is covered because they really needed that protection on Tuesday - the rain was apocalyptic!
