- How to trace and solve idle issues on your Toyota 4A-GE Engine (some may work for other Toyota Engines as well!)
Possible causes of wrong idle on your Toyota 4AGE engine can include:
1. Wrong idle adjustment screw tuning (check this video for a how-to on this subject: • Toyota 4AGE : How to s... )
2. Too rich mixture (I show how to adjust the fuel mixture)
3. How to clean the throttle body
4. How to spot a vaccum leak
5. Wrong ignition timing (How to set ignition timing on a 4AGE Engine: • Toyota 4AGE Engine: Ho... )
6. Wrong TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) tuning (See here how to set up your TPS correctly: • Toyota 4AGE : How to a... )
7. Stuck Idle Control Valve (IACV, ISCV or Idle Speed Control Valve).

Thanks a lot for this vid João! Please, does the idle mixture screw (as 4age manual says) adjusts just mixture at idle, the whole rpm range, or a defined rpm range?

I have a 16v 4age engine redtop but does not have an idle problem when the engine is cold or even hot (optimum). however when the air condition is Switched on, the idle drops to About 5/600 rpm. Today I blocked with my finger the small hole in the throttle body and the engine idle drops and even shut off the engine. Does this mean the iac valve needs cleaning so that the ac will work better or idle up the engine when switched on??

another idle issue on the 4age could be the coolant temp sender, causes floating idle and hesitation on throttle.
But doesn't it go back to regular operation after engine is hot
I had multiple issues going on at the same time but I remember it floating at idle/stops after driving for awhile.
If temp signal sender is bad it likely doesn't allow for the needed correction(?), even at temp but idk.
if you set the mixture too lean may you cause pistons or valve damages?
Did you ever opened the MAF sensor to check electronics inside?
I heard that if you set the CO mixture to lean, the engine will suffer, that is why Toyota (by default) they put the CO mixture a bit rich, is that right? Thanks mate! Good job!
for the engine 2NZ-FE is 1 ohm the tolerance in the sensor TPS?
Hi Joao this has been helpful I managed to reconditioned 4age DISTRIBUTOR, BUT AM HAVING PROBLEM MY 4AGE S3 WHEN ITS BEEN DRIVEN 30TO 40 KMS ONCE I SWITCHED OFF DOES NOT START FOR 5 T0 10MNS.HOWEVER WHEN PLUG THE JUMP BATTERY WILL START. PREVIOUS IT HAS BEEN BURNING IGNITION COIL. FROM MR.MYEZA BANENI.
my smallport idles high between second and third gear i have to step on the gas to nake the iddle down... Can you gelp with that??

@@bongimenqe825 you have a wax pellet that will melt when your engines warm and it can get dry and stuck will cause the same issues you are talking about
What about an idle which is too low on cold start but too high when hot?

Hey what about state side ae86? I don't have a MAP, I have AFM how do I check for stuck iacv? The car has to have the AFM connected to the TB to start and run.

Iv been having this really loud noise coming from my exhaust pipe, and my next door neighbor who's a trained professional mechanic said its the muffler bearing and that he could repair it for $870, do you know of a cheaper remedy that could temporarily fix this issue as i don't have $870 to spend at the moment and the noise is really annoying. Isn't it 10 at idle and 16 under throttle?
10 degrees in diagnostics mode and when u take it out of diagnostics mode it should goto 16 degrees before top dead center

Weak battery.
The problem that i've got when the car is cold the idle is okay but if the engine is getting hot the idling is lower than 1000rpm and sometime when i stop at the robots the engine switch off then have to start it again.
I have the exact same on my mr2 with a 4gze. Did you find a solution
