I think the US needs a ... Dutch History Month.
I'm totally not biased. Haha.
Te Declaration of Indipendance has some Dutch origin too.
Thomas Jefferson based it on de Dutch declaration of independence, the so called "Plakkaat van Verlating"(1581).
The scratch paper on which Jefferson wrote his statement was made by the Dutch Lubbertus van Gerrevink, a famous papermaker in that time.
The first 200 copies of the declaration were also made on Dutch paper, The watermarks in the paper show that it came from the Zaanse paper mills of Jacob Honig, D.&C. Blue and Adriaan Rogge.
I was in New York in 2018. There I saw quite a bit of Dutch history there. But the best thing for me as an Amsterdammer was the coat of arms of Amsterdam on the New York City Hall :-)
Historian Barbara Tuchman wrote a book called The First Salute about the American Revolution.
"We need to start teaching this stuff", just hit the nail on the head there; I am Dutch and I did not even know of this; this is such an interesting and important part of world history!
Wow, I now have a new channel to watch. Thanks. Very interesting.
Geography Geek has a lot of very interesting videos, and he pays attention to correctness.
@@dutchman7623 Thanks, I have already watched a couple of them. I thinking am going to really like this.
The Dutch did not care..still my favourite line from this video
Awesome video! Sadly this part of history isn’t much talked about in Dutch history classes either. The entire 18th century is sadly a bit forgotten in the Dutch curriculum. Simply because the Dutch Golden Age was over, and the 20th century is considered a must to learn about at school. That leaves a lot of stuff to be skipped I’m afraid. This is one of the reasons why I gave up to become a history teacher. Glad that these videos exist to teach everyone about these more obscure parts of our common history! Thank you so much for sharing, and thanks again for a great reaction Highly. 👏🏻
@CAPTAIN HOOK I actually work at a museum.
@captainhook5410 They should teach these important things in schools about our history. When I ask 16yo to 18yo about Michiel de Ruyter, lots of them can't tell me who he was and some can't even remember ever hearing his name before. That's just sad.
...And Roosevelt is a Dutch name;) Just like Cooper (Kuyper) and many others. In fact there are so many Dutch words in English language. There is a YT video also that covers that.
The president Martin van Buren was of Dutch heritage and spoke English as a second language.. and both Roosevelts are also of Dutch heritage. :)
Don't worry, the Dutch don't hear this in history class either, unless you specifically study Dutch and/or American (early)modern history.
I learned it at school (VWO).

I am proud to be Dutch for all it's history. And I will be allways thankfull to the 101st airborn who liberated my hometown and parents and grandparents in september 1944. So that mutual friendship is still going on..
Same here! Your grandparents from Eindhoven?
There's a cool movie made about the naval war with the Dutch and England a few years ago callled "The Admiral". Good movie too.
I really enjoy your vids!
Love from the Netherlands!
The Dutch are the best and oldest ,,forgotten friend'' of the Americans. They now have a stronger bond with their former enemy England than with their oldest ally and friend the Dutch. Power and money attract each other more than friendship?🤨
Efficiency is definitely part of the backbone of our country.
We're known for being direct, that's purely because it's more efficient.
I appreciate the sincere interest in my little country, have a great weekend brother! 😊🌷
You got a good point about the teaching. The more you know the more understanding there is gonna be. We alot more connected to eachother than some realize.
Hello from the Netherlands .
thanks for the video Highly .
Sincerely, Hollandduck
I m proud on the history, not always the best way, but it still learning every day thanks higly ❣️
The Dutch did send over troops and used warships to defend America. Even sent over hundreds of ships filled with gold that was sunk
34 rule of acquisition: War is good for business.
When I joined the Royal Dutch Navy, my first time going to sea during basic training, was a week of sailing along the English coast, on an old 3 masted sailing ship.
We did this for both team building, training at sea and to honor our navel history.
You should have sailed along the Medway to see their reaction.

Money please. Money now. Money me needing a lot now. Thank you.
It is because Brittish influence. The banned all Dutch history after the last war. English wrote most of what you know and left the Dutch out of it mostly.
And English became the dominant language in your country.
That made it hard to understand what was left to find on the history written by the Dutch.
I believe it was something like this. I love watching this kind of history
Ignore your history and you're bound to repeat the same mistakes. In high school I had a history teacher that could tell all kinds of stories in such an enthusiastic way it sparked an interest in all kinds of historic subjects. And I only had his class for one year!
Greetings from Amsterdam!
yes it's such a pity that it didn't turn out as it should otherwise I wouldn't need Google Translate now
I agree that it's actually sad that things so important are not told in schools in the US. They have a lot less to teach as in Europe and Asia where history is many hundreds of years older and with lots more to talk about. So there's no good excuse. While visiting the US all the people I told about this part of history, they all told me they had never heard about it before.
I am always amazed at the ignorance promoted by the American education system. The Dutch basically financed the American revolution, and the eventual Declaration of Independence had its origins in the Dutch own declaration of independence at the end of the 80-Year War against Spain. Generations of Americans have remained completely oblivious of the major impact the Dutch had on their history.
I'm Dutch, well, originally I have to say, I converted It's funny/interesting these stories come out little by little. (most I know are surprised, that when I tell them, "orange county etc." yeah that's dutch, "nassau ..." yeah that's dutch Brooklyn(Breukelen) yeah that's dutch, Harlem(Haarlem) yeah that's dutch .... whenever I run into someone whose last name starts with, "van...." I always state, so your heritage is dutch? hahaha.
The British kicked our ass for smuggling weapons to the States. The Dutch were the first to acknowlegde USA as a country. Nice one HXC
Great video…and yes great history lessons that should be taught in your historyclass. Unfortunately the Dutch are also infamous for other cargotrades to the USA namely slavetrade…but again it’s still history which should be taught..
12:50...there is a history no one wants to teach in schools. The world Fairs..all over the usa... buildings with a footprint of hundreds(!) of acres..built for 6 months? San Fransisco built as a gold rush town, yet overnight became a millions town, and Mormones came to Saltlake City with horse and carriage..2 years later built solid sandstone multi--ton blocks temples...San Fransisco after the fire..completely rebult as a town for millions... founded... found it
Thanks for this try orgineel het dorp van Wim Sonneveld the sub have you André van duin het dorp
GB: No one gives these yanks any help!
NL: Hmmm... Hey boys, wanna buy a gun & stick it to 'em?
GB: You traitor! I'll block the ports!
NL *Meanwhile somewhere up a little river: You've got be smarter than that.
The Netherlands is the 51st state
It ain't much if it ain't Dutch!
Gun salutes were and are honorific not recognition on a state level of independence... Why is it considered so?
The way I understand it the (13 colonies) Americas were recognised internationally in the Paris Treaty in 1783 and not before...
So we Dutchies even went to war against the Brittish in the 18th century because of the U.S. and in return the U.S. doesn't even teach anything about it in school? Shame on you America ! Shame on you !
You Can Start to teach. We Duchies will help you. keep the channel up and reach out to youre fellow Americans. without us youre athem sounds like ..... save the Queen
