I am such a fan of the haka, no matter the origin or purpose. I’m just an average white guy in the USA, so it might seem odd. However, I am old enough to remember and miss the days of respect and honor when you could trust a man’s handshake or his word. I love that the haka is full of respect and honor and is diligently handed down the generations so that the youth understand.

I am six straight line to the hairy man Te Wharerangi in the haka Ka Mate Ka Mate, who not only saves Te Rauparaha's life, but eventually pays for this act with his own life ten years later and is eaten when Maru and their Allies return to Rotoaira in a revenge attack on Motu-a-puhi. I am a survivor of the Motu-a-puhi massacre. What makes this event special to us the whanau of Te Wharerangi, is that he lay down his life for his enemy as opposed to for his friend. It is a shame that the focus has been on the composer of the haka, and not on the actual event. On my marae at Otukou, this korero is carved into the poutokomanwa for everyone to see and know. If Te Wharerangi doesn't save his enemy Te Rauparaha, he dies. A little respect for the hairy man and his whanau would be nice.

The full version of ka mate. Nice. This haka was performed to my chief Te Wharerangi Chief of subtribe Ngati Hikairo . From Toa chief Te Rauparaha. My chief helped Terauparaha. Who was being chased by Te kooti a warrior, out to kill him. My chief hid him below his wife. In a potato pit. Te kooti came through but was told he wasn't there. He knew he was there but didn't know where. Woman were never touched by the warriors in those days. Te kooti carried on. But later found out that my chief helped terauparaha. And as a punishment, at night. Our whole subtribe was slaughtered all but the chiefs son and daughter who were sent away, as he knew what was going to happen. And our chiefs body eaten. Head taken as a trophy. Before the mass deaths toa chief composed this haka to my chief as a thanks for saving my life.. our paramount tribe Tuwharetoa knew what had happened. A few nights later. Te kooti and his men where slaughtered to death by our big chiefs brother.

His mother is Parerohi the daughter of Matuahu, the son of the hairy man Te Wharerangi. Ten years after this event, Te Wharerangi and his people are murdered by those that sort to kill Te Rauparaha on Motu a puhi. My koro and your koro were enemies not friends. Te Heu Heu was the friend and relation to your koro. It is he that sends your koro to my people. My people died at the end of a gun. This korero is recorded on the poutokomanawa on Okahukura. I carry this korero on behalf of my people and not Tuwharetoa. Greater love has no man' than he lay down his life for a friend. My koro lay down his life for his enemy. This is the universal taonga. Tēnei te tangata pūhuruhuru
Nāna nei i tiki mai whakawhiti te rā
    Ā, upane! ka upane!
Ā, upane, ka upane, whiti te ra!
'Tis death! 'tis death! (or: I may die) 'Tis life! 'tis life! (or: I may live)
'Tis death! 'tis death! 'Tis life! 'tis life!
    This is the hairy man
Who summons the sun and makes it shine
A step upward, another step upward!
A step upward, another... the Sun shines!

@@taylorhine2962 Correct. The first verse is actually a graphic description of someone's first time having sex..
The translation is closer to this:
      I'm jabbering and quivering,
      stuttering, shaking and naked!
      I'm brushed by your body
      your carved flesh, so vibrant!
      Forbidden mysteries are revealed;
banter and intimacy, your flushed face:
I am caught up with passion.
      I'm scared but fully alert.
Who is this man so bold
      investigating the fleshy curves,
      smelling so pungently below?
