Hey everyone! Today we have a Late Sixties Shootout between two brand new Jazz Bass models from Harley Benton and Squier. These basses are surprisingly similar with their 60's pickup spacing, single coil alnico pickups, bound and blocked indian laurel fingerboards, and vintage vibes. If squire did a normal jazz bass like the classic vibe 60s/ 70s with a rosted maple neck, i think they would sell like hotcakes
The neck is what kills me with squire basses. I can’t do it.
I've seen folks put that Roasted Maple Fender neck that you can buy from Fender on Squiers with great results.... but those necks cost nearly as much as the bass LOL

I just bought a Squier 40th Anniversary Vintage Jazz, and the neck on it is next level. No fret ends, nice tint, and I love the satin finish. Try that.
The Squire has a smoother tone but I feel like it had less versatility through the tone knob adjustments. I like that the HB has a little edge to it and you know the hardware is going to outlast the Squire's. For half the price you could swap out the pick ups and still come in cheaper than the Squire.

Ever since I first saw it I like the HB so much with the roasted maple neck, the block inlays, and especially in this colour. Despite the weight it seems and sounds like a decent choice for a jazz bass for an amateur like myself. I already own a P+H config HB bass, which I'm totally satisfied with so your review just made me want to have a sibling for it... :)

Great A/b test here lobster. My ears are saying the HB, my eyes are saying the HB and my wallet is saying the HB. The Squire sounds better with tone dialed down but really the differences are down to taste, I never play with muted tone. You are making me want my second HB bass despite the weight, I can always chamber some weight of it. Slap tone on the HB is great and the bridge pup has that nice nasally tone I love.

Same here Frank, got the Harley Benton as my first Jazz bass and i am still blown away how much bass for that money came. Lobster already said everything, but i dont mind the weight since I sit most of the time and personally live the siund of the pickups a lot! Go get it!

I say this as a huge Harley Benton fan, the Squier beats it hands down tonally, much richer and fuller to my ears.
Harley Benton's are great for trying a style of bazz, jazz, stingray etc eithout spending much money
From what I hear, for me, It would come down to price. The diffrences are so slight that in a band setting you wouldn't be able to tell the diffrence. So for me it's the Harley Benton MV-4JB

I found a CV Jazz for $100 with a gig bag used and I can’t fault it for that price. It’s phenomenal.
Otoh, I pre-ordered a USA Geddy and should get it at some point. It’ll be the main and the CV my backup. Love the review vids Lobster and keep ‘em coming.

I have never been a fan of either companies. However a bass that comes with Wilkinson bridge gotoh tuners and alder body for under 200 that sounds like that no brainer
I think the HB sounds really good, but there´s some characteristic JB attack I miss on it, so my choice still is Squier ;)
Both budget pickup's sound great for the price th bass costs!! I think you said the Squier have high 7 output..I think that is s lot for the price...But I like a lot the bridge pickup from HB, especially in Fingerstyle... Great demo! I like BOTH! I think the HB is a little brighter and punchier than the Squire. But the weight issue with the HB is the deal breaker for me. I would go with the squier and do some upgrades from there. But all n’ all; they both sound great!!🤨🎶👍🏾

I have the Squier CV 50's Precision bass and my most favorite Squier of all time the Paranormal jazz bass I snapped up in Toledo after watching your review on that bass and I just love that bass.
Hey Lobster, Salutations! I read some of your comments and have an old-school tech tip for you: Order some stuff from Philadelphia Luthier and the parts will come in a bag with a business card printed on the information card at the top. If you cut it out carefully with a pair of sissors you'll get a free Luthiers Guide for measuring all sorts of bass related things. That place rocks btw, and no, I don't work there.
Then take the gauge and set your pickup height like this: put the card sideways on the 64th inch scale. You place the gauge on top of the center of the magnet pole piece(which is perfectly ok b/c the gauge is a piece of laminated cardboard) of your bridge pickup and measure 8/64th to the underside of the E string. Repeat with Bridge Pickup. Then flip the bass over and set your gauge to 6/64ths to the underside of the G string for both pickups.
This measurement will get you in the ballpark, as each bass is a bit different, and is the original one from Fender for their basses. It eliminates the eyeball guesswork out of a setup and will help you with your comparison videos.

The contrast between the punchier and more stylized HB and the somewhat more natural and open sounding Squier repeats itself among basses all the time, and at all price levels. In this case, I think I'd choose the Squier because the low notes seem to have have more authority, and both basses seem to have all the mids they need, but I could also see choosing the HB.
The Squier sounds a bit more raw in comparison, but honestly I prefer the brighter tone of the HB!

Bought the squier for the sale price, and its fun to play around on, def needed a set up but still a good mod platform. Wouldn't do it for the 450 price point though.
A little brighter and raspier sound for the HB. For the looks: HB! I never tried one of these basses. Wondering how they hold up in a band setting. In the video, everything sounds nice, clean, direct. But how about the performance through an amp? Is there a difference compared to more high end instruments?

The Harley Benton has a brighter and punchier sound and Squier has slightly rounder and Fuller bottom end. I have three Harley Benton basses: fretless jazz( really great fat tone super low action intonation spot on since I tweaked it and I'm going to take the boosted hand NFP filters out of my sire V7 and put it in the fretless and put the original preamp back in the sire. Though I may put an at a later time) a JP450 and a Marquess. They're all exceptionally well made smooth easy playing have great Woods I modified the Marquess by putting twx EMG pickups in it and it has an incredibly wide palette of tones now. So for the money I'd go with Harley button and you can always make up for the difference in bottom end with a little EQ.
Sounds like a lot of tonal difference comes from different neck pickup height setups. Squier sounds like the pickup is closer to the strings, resulting in a different balance, HB sounds more "classic JB" with balance more towards the bridge pup. But I could be wrong
Great comment. The pickups were interesting as the HB's poles protruded a bit more and were more prone to the string hitting the pole, so I backed off the neck pickup height slightly. The Squier's poles were a lot more flush with the pickup casing and didn't have this problem

Interesting comparison! I agree that the Squier sounds better, but not more than double the price better. The Harley Benton sounds surprisingly good for the price! With its better hardware and fit and finish, it wins the battle for me. I also prefer its satin roasted neck. The pickups can easily be upgraded to edge it out. And I actually like the less aggressive tone blend, but the one on the Squier is also pretty good and still manages to keep some nice definition.

To my ears, the sound of the HB is more compressed than the squier. But maybe with a little upgrade, it can be a very nice bass.

They both sound like... passive jazz basses??? Both sound great to me. I would think you could probably find as much tone variation between individual examples of each bass. If I had to pick, the Squier did sound sound a bit closer to a vintage Fender 60s Jazz bass and I guess that is what they were both going for. I don't own either of these particular models but do have a jazz bass example from both Squier and Harley Benton. I enjoy them both. My Squier is a cheaper Affinity model and the basic set up, neck, fret work, component quality, playability etc. was fine. Maybe I got lucky, or you got unlucky Lobster? My Squier is burgundy mist with a swapped out white pick guard and I don't think could look any better, imo. The 10.8 lbs. for the Harley Benton would be a deal/back breaker for me at this point. Maybe not 30 yrs. ago but definitely now in my mid to late 50s!!
Definitively prefer the HB : very rock n' roll tone which can be difficult to have on a lot of JB, even more expensive. The feeling neck looks very pleasant.

The weight is a problem. But with an high-end strap, we're still under the SQ price... (And good for 5 and 6 strings 😇)
What’s the neck profile like on the HB? I’m liking what I’m hearing so I’m thinking of picking on up, I’m in Europe so I can quite easily send it back if the weight is outrageous
That's a win for HB almost entirely across the board in my opinion. I think I prefer the Squier with the tone down at 0. But Bravo HB! They continue to punch way above their price point.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard two instruments sound so close, at least on my phone speaker.
Both sounded comparable to me. Yes, maybe the edge to the Squire. When the backs were tuned it looked like the Harley Benton's body was a little more compact. Shame it's a boat anchor :) My G&L L-1000 weighs less than 8lb 2oz. 1.6 oz I think. So I am spoiled. I won't even look at a bass 9 or more pounds.
The Squier Jazz bass was a lot brighter and I was imagining how the Harley Benton wouid sound with a set of flats on it.

hey Lobster, how about neck profile? I love Squier J necks, but I had HB JB 75 and the neck was so chunky that I sold it.
The HB neck was VERY comfortable. I guess it's a D as opposed to a C, but I thought the HB's neck felt superior hands down.
Hey Lobster 🦞 Does the nut play a major role in the tone? If so, what is the best nut for these basses? I believe the Harley Benton have a graphite nut and the Squire may have a plastic or bone nut.
I personally don't think so outside of open notes. Graphite and bone both offer great smoothness and have surfaces that won't catch the string. I think that's the biggest thing with a nut, a quality one will help with tuning stability
I like the HB better, but it is a shoulder killer at 10.8 lbs.

I honestly like the look, tone and price of the HB much more. But there's no way I can deal with a 11 pounds bass. Total deal (and shoulders) breaker for me.
Me to, I have a also the HB and is impossible to use with a gig. Way too heavey

They are not all that heavy. The one I ordered last week is just 4.2 kg.

@@jankirsten1012 which model is 4.2kg ? Because I can't get it. Some people claim that this Gotoh special edition Jazz Bass is 4.2kg. but If Mr. Lobster claims about 11lbs it just can't be such a difference between same model instruments.
I think the Squier sounds better. Also it would not be lost in the mix.
It's hard to understand how HB can be price like that with gotoh tuners.
Squier CV vary greatly in quality between all their factories . I just got a CV 40th jazz bass in dark red metallic it very nice.
The HB did sound good especially for $190, where were basses like that when I was a kid?

Hehe, yeah just had a bit of a sore/dry throat. Being in humid italy for 2 weeks and then coming back to dry New England definitely took some adjustment hahah. I feel great now though

Both sounded similar… although the high end on the Squier was smoother. Just why the HB is so heavy I can’t make out.
Greetings Lobster, sorry that this is slightly unrelated but this video is about jazz basses so close enough? I'm looking to upgrade my Sire V3, my main issue with it being the pickups' (neck especially) thinness. I know that's somewhat unavoidable with single coils, and jazz basses especially, but I love everything else about it and would rather swap a couple parts than buy a different bass. From searching online I'm having trouble deciding, so I wanted to ask what would be some good choices for a thicker, humbucker-esque sound. I'm most interested in the Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups, as they claim (and sound, from videos I've seen) to have more low end than the average jazz pickup.
Sorry for all the questions but you're a cool internet guy and most forum posters just say: "a jazz is a jazz, get a precision if you want thick tone" or similar things
Hey Denice! I had upgraded the Sire V5 and Sire V7 I own with DiMarzio Area J pickups. To my ears they maintain the 'vintage' J tone while also being hum cancelling. Though I haven't used the Ultra J's, we will have some content coming with the new Relentless J's and the 60's J's that were just released from DiMarzio

Seems like the HB has a bit more tone control when you roll off the highs. The Squier has a slight edge in sound, but not a $100-$200 edge in sound! Truth be told, I'd probably go for the HB, then mount some better pickups in it for the same price as the Squier.
I would actually call the squier satin and the harley benton matte for the neck finish.

Mine finally arrived today in a beautiful shell pink. And it weighs 4.4Kg or 9.7lb. In comparison, my PJ-74 VW as well as my JP-45OP come in at precisely 4Kg, or 8.8lb. It’s a bit noticeable, but not a huge difference. All the pickups and electronics on all of them have been upgraded to hand-wound ones wound to vintage specs, and it makes a tremendous difference, particularly the JP-45OP. I will probably upgrade the tuners on that one as well.

Hi there. IDK how it's possible to nave such a huge difference in weight between 2 guitars of a same model as you say yours is 9.7 and Lobster claims 11 for his one. Besides HB states that it's Alder not Ash like in JB-75 so it should be lighter obviously. Very strange.
@yuriichynchyk1380 the weights on the cheap basses are all over the place. Some are heavy, some are fine. They're not exactly hand picking the lightest bits of lumber lol
@@yurii_chynchyk Personally I don't find the weight to be a major issue. What matters the most to me is the sound in a studio session environment, and the feel while playing. And they definitely deliver in both these departments.
As I can see from here one of the significant differences between them is the bridge pickup position. Squire's bridge pickup is farther from the bridge (classic 60's setup) and HB's is closer to the bridge more like a 70's JB. That's maybe why some of the comments here mention Squire has a smoother tone, not the pickup height setting
Hey Kegan! Looks can be deceiving. The pickup location is the exact same, but the HB has a 'taller' bridge with two extra screws on the other side of the saddle, giving the illusion that the bridge pickup is farther back. I measured them out by hand to be sure because I thought the same thing and was having trouble eyeing whether or not the HB was 60's or 70's spacing.

@@LowEndLobster By the way I am seriously considering Harley Benton. It looks great and the details like block inlays, neck binding etc. tick all the right boxes for me. When you consider you don't need to upgrade pickups, tuners this bass becomes an amazing value. I have also watched a couple of other reviews and surely its tone suits me better than Squire's. The weight is not an issue, I will use it more for recording. As you had mentioned in your review I will probably replace electronics only.

Lobster, I'm curious about the ring you often wear on your right thumb. Is it style or function? I've heard of 'slaprings' and gaffer tape, and I'm wondering if it has something to do with slap? You have one of the best bass channels on UA-cam. Because of you and some polite persistence, Fender took very good care of me during Gretsch-gate. I hesitate to cite specifics but they were quite generous. I also bought the Labor Day special Jazz Bass, but mine arrived in much better shape than yours, despite being misdelivered by FedEx. It needs some tweaks, but not much more. I intend to take advantage of your Harley Beston ordering advice soon (re shipping cost) on a fretless Jazz Bass (HB's has fret markings), their Bass VI version and possibly a guitar of some kind. I keep watching your reviews for other ideas. I think very highly of you. Keep up the great work! Dan

I tried the Harley Benton then I tried a J bass made by Newen, body made of Patagonian Ash with maple neck, love it and sounds than Harley Benton. Must be the 2 piece solid body. The only thing I'm changing is the bridge for Gotoh. The Newen cost me 170 USD . I think it's a .U h better deal

after you upgrade the HB pickups the price difference isn't much + you're stuck with a heavy bass
i'd normally say try them in person and hope you can find a light HB or a squier without fret issues.. though in usa at least you can't.. so i'd choose the squier blind and hope to win the qc lottery .. if not, squier issues are usually fixable by yourself for free or cheap
noticed the squier late 60 sjazz isn't for sale at all even anymore.. so it's a cool limited item if nothing else that will probably hold more value

I like the tone of the Squier just a little more but would I pay 'bout 300% the prize for this difference?...eehhhhm...definitely not! I just love the prize for value of those Thomann/Harley Benton instruments and if I would already have 7 basses (and just need 2-3 xD) I would buy the MV-4JB, but not in blue :-D
I much prefer the harley by far...tone wise that is, i have the harley vintage ash and maple version and it sounds just awesome, i had the original fender version of the squire, i didn't like it
I'd still put my stock and faith in the Harley Benton,.........Fender's Q.C. is quite below marginal at best.
Heck,...you can buy TWO of the Harley Bentons compared to the price point of the Fender Squier.
With tone open the HB was too bright, tone closed it was darker than the squire, think maybe the HB has less mids

TBH the Harley Benton would need a lot less work, though is still nearly 2 lbs heavier. The HB has the upgraded hardware already, I'd say some shielding and maybe a set of pickups would make you more than golden with the HB. The Squier would definitely require a bit if you'd plan on upgrading the tuners and bridge as well.

The sound and the weight, the Squier gets the nod. As for the hardware, neck and price, the Harley Benton gets the nod.
I like the look and hardware of the HB, but I like more the sound of the Squier. The weight of the HB is too much for me.
Definitely the HB sounds better from where I sit and I think fender is getting to big for its boots.
Maybe you could do a switcharoo with the pickups.

i just tried the HB and really hate the neck. it's like a baseball bat and you can feel the edges of the "skunk stripe" - very offputting. nothing like a proper fender jazz or japanese squier precision neck. doesn't seem that heavy though - but that neck is not nice

The Squire has a better sound but the HB just sounds louder
Not really comparable though, the squier will for sure sound more 'vintage' and 'fuller' because it has 60s pickup spacing. The 70s pickup spacing on the HB will make it sound more like Marcus Miller because he used a 70s jazz bass. They are exactly different enough to not be able to compare them.

They're both 60's, the HB has a longer bridge which makes it look like 70s.

Wow, that weight difference. And come to think of it, the HB has a smaller body too! As far as tone is concerned, the Squier completely stomps all over the HB. You can even use the Squier as a "Precision lite" with the neck pickup soloed and tone somewhere around 50%. Very good.
