I found this to be pretty informative EXCEPT the part about needing to Polish your car before applying a nano coating. This is not true. Every time you polish/compound a cars paint you are taking material off in some cases that is not a good idea. For example, if you live somewhere with EXTREME weather where the temps oare 120F+ all summer and UV Index is 10+ why on earth would you want to take clear coat off your car? If the paint is somewhere where YOU are happy with it, you CAN apply a nano coating over swirl marks or light scratches IF your happy with how your car looks. Some people go WAY overboard on polishing and try to get that PERFECT finish thinking that by applying a nano coating after it will take the place of the clear you polished off. That is NOT true. So keep that in mind. Another issue I personally have with nono coatings AKA Ceramic coatings is water spotting. Yes they make the car super hydrophobic but again, if you live somewhere where extreme temps are an issue and your car gets a water sprinkler hitting it, or a monsoon passes and then the car is sitting in the sun the rest of the day? Well, your coating is going to spot so bad. As much as I like nano coatings they are not perfect, and in some cases a good polymer/polyamino silicone sealant can provide as good of protection though requiring repeated applications throughout the year. It just depends on what you like. Lastly, nano coatings also make most cars look overly glossy. Like a Toy Car look. Personally I am not a big fan of overly glossy car paint. To date, I know of no company that applies a nano coating to a Concords style event. There is a reason for that. So just do what you can, and if your ok with paying someone hundreds of dollars and in some cases thousands of dollars to have someone apply a nano coating to your car that is great, I find it ironic people spending this money only to trade in or sell their car 2-3 yrs later then spend all that money all over again on a new car. Just makes no sense to me. To use my Mother's Lexus IS300 as an example, my Parents bought this car new in 2001, my Mom still drives it everyday, she is in her mid 70's. The car is pearl white, has 300k miles on it and never has been nano coated. My Dad simply applies a polymer sealant at the change of ever season, does maintenance washes and uses a spray wax in between and after 23 yrs my Parents still get comments on how new their car looks. So no matter what you decide to do, just doing SOMETHING will keep your car looking good for many years to come Nono Coated or not.👍
A polish isn’t just for paint correction, it ensures removal of all previous coatings or waxes. This way the coating adheres to a virgin clear coatThey also make polishes which don’t cut into your clear coat like you believe. There are different levels. And a simple spray of a water spot remover every so many washes removes any unwanted water spots. But hey ceramic coatings aren’t for everyone. Some prefer waxes and sealants. To each their own. 👍🙂
@@josejose2100 well I will disagree with you you don't need to polish the paint to clean the paint there's other ways of decontamination that do not require a Polish. And there is a big difference between water spots and water etching water spot removal liquids that you can buy or whatever do not work for water etching once the paint is etched the only way to get it out is by polishing it which means you're removing clear coat. When you live out in super warm climates like where I live ceramic coatings kind of work against you more than for you.
Great video Jason! I deal with dealerships detailers daily in my business and see the “Ceramic Coatings” they install. Most apply a spray sealant and charge $2k. That hurts all of us in the market when they do that. I have had a lot of people come to me and I’ve tried informing them about true coatings and they say “ I don’t want that because the dealership put that on my car and it didn’t last long and I paid a lot of money for it”. It’s unfortunate dealerships are ok with absolutely ripping people off and get away with it all the time. The new thing now is they apply the “ceramic coating” right off the truck and bill it on the backside of the ticket. They then try to sell it to you and if you refuse it looks like they took it off but it’s still there. They make out with your money either way. I could go on and on about this subject. 😂
Great video Jason. So much misinformation out there and can lead to confusion. Back when i got my new car in 2021 and knew next to nothing about detailing i got suckered by the "9H" hardness. While the coating did last almost 3 years... i know better now
Thank you for this video. I am a DIY guy and have often wondered if those claims I hear for spray wax with ceramic vs a real coating are true. Now I know what I suspected as elaborate claims was in fact not the same as a real one.

ive gone back and forth on actively trying to sell coatings , most of the people will not do proper maintenance and will be way more cost effective for them just to have a cleaner wax type of service once or twice a year , the amount of people I've found that will actually wash there car once a week or even biweekly is almost zero
I did one on my car a few years ago. It lasted a long time. However, I hated it. While washing was easy, it always attracted dirt. Fusso Soft 99 is so much better.
Ron Tonkin dealerships in the PNW will try to bake in "cilajet ceramic coating" into your car purchase, and it's at best a mediocre wax based on my experience with them. Ceramic coatings are just to keep the car cleaner longer. That’s it. The paint will still scratch, crap will still stick to it, etc. Like Jason said, it’s the prep and maintenance after the coating has been applied is what makes the 🚘 standout and look amazing.
This is not completely true. While they do have self cleaning properties, they don’t necessarily keep the car cleaner longer. They make it easier to clean and maintain 100%, but you still need to clean it. Also, it will definitely keep contamination and chemicals from damaging the paint. They do protect the car from long term damage from UV rays. They help keep water spots from damaging the paint. Ceramic coatings absolutely have a ton of benefits, it’s not just about how clean the car is. Yes, it can scratch, deeper scratches, rock chips, any contact damage coatings will not protect you from this.
Had a business promoting their coating on FB during the week. Claiming up to 500% stronger than any other ceramic coating. I asked them which coating they have compared theirs to but got no response.
Unfortunately, people sometimes tout the abilities of PPF on the same realm as what a ceramic coating can shield or protect from. Like you mentioned, it is important to have a reputable and knowledgeable detailer perform the ceramic coating (or any detailing service) as there are some unscrupulous people out there.
How much should it REALLY cost? 2 step paint correction $250-$400 depending on the size. Worst case scenario for deeply swirled paint is $500. $300 to apply the coating. Some detailers are selling a lie that ceramic coatings are 100% scratch resistant, 100% contamination proof and that anything can be rinsed off while charging $2500. Customer has a bird poop on the car 5 months later and cant rinse it off or can’t rinse off dead bugs on the bumper. Once ceramic coatings can rinse off anything and be 100% scratch resistant it’ll be worth $3,000. Get a PPF.
I have people ask me about ceramic coating their car. I ask them if they take their car to a car wash. If they say yes, I tell them I don’t want to take your money. I’ll just apply a ceramic sealant. Usually last 6 months.
The guy who details my car uses a spray on sealer for a regular detail, $50. Now he has a ceramic sealer that's applied with a small sponge-like applicator. I'm going to have him apply it on my next detail, $150. The guy does a tremendous job. My 2014 Toyota avalon looks showroom new, I only have 22,000 miles on it. Shame that he's planning on stopping his service in a couple of years.
If a detailer sells you a coating with a warranty and says you need to come back to me every x often at x cost for maintenance to keep the warranty, it's illegal under US federal law.
although not a scam in the sense of true scam, i think the hoops you have to jump through to qualify for a company’s “pro” coating is a scam. i completely understand it’s their rules and you have to follow them to qualify so i’m not mad about that. but if feels scam-ish, we can buy the regular coatings but we have to do what they say to touch the pro coatings one company told me that i’d HAVE to charge my customers at least $2,500 to buy their $300 coating theres the classic $xxx a month subscription their coatings another said i’d have to buy x amount of coatings after qualifying it’s their company and their rules as i said so i can’t get upset but yeah … scam adjacent for sure
Coatings got such a bad rep from overmarketing. A lot of businesses are still hesitant even when it comes to the ceramic spray sealants. I'm a firm believer that ceramic based products are superior in almost every way, but a true ceramic coating isn't for everyone and that's okay. A ceramic detailer, though, will always be an excellent choice for the average joe. That being said, I've never seen anything as hydrophobic as a coating. I put a 3 year (not DIY Detail) coating on my car once and the beading was INSANE. First time I took a pressure washer to it, the beads were huge. As soon as water hit the paint, it'd go straight to beading.
What is your go to car wash soap? And ceramic topper if any? My car is parked outside - only driven once week to go get food… I do try to wash once a week as well. Kind of sick of paying high $$$ for gyeon & carpro products.
Old school detailer here. I don’t really see the point of ceramic coating. For best results, I would stick to regular hand polishing, say maybe one a month, then maintain gloss and remove contaminants.
You need to fully super clean & clay bar every thing then apply real ceramic coating correctly under the right temperatures and let cure for 24 to 48 hours. Wash your car by hand every time and it'll last for years.
My uncle bought that Nexgen "ceramic" coating lolol. I told him it's nothing but a sio2 sealant. He gave it to me after I polished and coated his 4runner. Now it's been over 2 years and I need to go back and see how it's holding up haha. Told him touchless washes only. I cant temember the name but it was a comapny adverising their "coating" everywhere. Like taking a bucket full of mud/water and throwing it onto the hood of a car. I asked on one of their FB ads if their "coating" would protect my from shopping cart damage, like a ding or dent. The rep said it would hahaha. I asked them who a lawyer could contact for false advetising. They never responded. I see so many ads for sealants sold as coatings and the people falling for it. Or the "professional" detailers slamming actual coatings then pushing a spray sealant and saying rhey offer the same protection and life of a coating. It all comes back to the traveling salesman and the ol' snake oil for many companies out there
I have a motorcycle with faded black plastics. I was told ceramic coating can act as a back to black on them and keep them from fading for longer periods of time. What brands are legit ceramic coatings?
Question - I did my own Compound and Polish 2 years ago - and applied 1 layer of CSL and 2 x layers of Exo v4 at the time. Last year - so one year into having the coatings on the car - I added 2 more layers of Exo v5 as "toppers" to the car to maintain the life of the coating. Is this a good idea to continue to do? The car is garage kept, washed with a presoak of CarPro Lift then a contact wash (2 bucket method) of KochChemie GSF every 2-3 weeks. Additionally I use Carpro Hydr02 lite as a drying agent and blow it dry. Just trying to determine if I'm wasting money by adding "sacrificial" layers to the car every year
If you’re consistently garaging your car, it probably is. That said, it also depends on how often you drive it-if it’s your daily and it sits outside while you’re at work, I’d guess you’re not hurting anything by refreshing the protection. You probably don’t need two layers though
@@seventysschev Thanks - it's typically only driven a few times a week - and only really outside while driving or if I'm parked at a store. In the office only once a week and it's in a garage during that time.
Ceramic coating warranties are mostly a joke , I've read many that are so watertight that you can't fart or listen to Linkin Park in you're car without voiding the warranty.
Jason, off topic question. What MagSafe wallet is that on your desk? It looks like it holds more than the standard 2 cards. Thanks in advance for your reply.
Icon Rocklear is the biggest scam right now, it has a place but it’s not on vehicles that can be restored to their original beauty and especially not new vehicles. The two vehicles that we’ve seen it on look horrible, oil slick type pattern, all over the trim, flaking in spots and has a weird texture. Make a video on self leveling clear coat products!!!!
Only if you don't care how good the paint looks after the coating is applied, and/or don't care how well the coating performs, sure... Feel free to skip the polishing step. 😅
I wouldn’t. You will likely mar the finish with that towel and if you’ve got the eye for swirl marks you will not be happy. Going after those swirls with a polisher will remove the coating.
😜😜so many of them but that's why we rely on your reviews as well as from Phil Miranda, Chelsea Longabaugh, Carlos Serrano, Yvan Lacroix, Pan The Organizer, Jamie The Cleaner, Eddie Colon, Tim Mclaughlin, Brian Spitler from ApexDetail, Sandro Stagnos from Car Craft Auto Care, Brian from FAB Automotive Detailing, Eric PapaSmurf918, Phoenix EOD (Aaron Burkett), Antonio Ralda from Ralda's Details, Levi Gates and Anthony Fisher from TRC and others
Ceramic coating has made my car look worse! Anytime it rains or there is dew I get water beading, and the beads hold dust. When they dry out I get dust circles on the vehicle which are way more noticeable than just an even coating of dust. The car looks worse than cars sitting right beside it which have a fainter even coating of dust. So it end up washing more frequently.
Finally, a video that isn’t steered towards marketing. The truth finally.
This is a great informational video for customers looking for ceramic coatings.
Glad it was helpful!

@ You’re welcome! I hope it helps clarify
Ever notice why Turtle Wax, a huge company, has yet to introduce a liquid in the little bottle product?
Great info man
Im wondering if i got what i paid for? Got gtech ultra and exo. Looks, feels, beads good , but will never know if they did what they said they would.
Great combo of products.
Ceramic coating warranties are mostly a joke , I've read many that are so watertight that you can't fart or listen to Linkin Park in you're car without voiding the warranty.
The latest I’ve seen was a company offering their new borograph coating that is impact resistant 😂
Chlorophyll more like Boraphyll
@ great reference to the movie Billy Madison lol
PPF or ceramic? If both, ceramic first?
Jason, off topic question. What MagSafe wallet is that on your desk? It looks like it holds more than the standard 2 cards. Thanks in advance for your reply.

If you’re worried about swirls on a black truck then you’re getting it polished and recoated every year. I have one customer who does this with me.
When a ceramic coating does wear out, do you have to completely polish the car and start over with whatever protection you decide to apply next?
Just a light polish with the finishing grit is fine.
The coating should be based on usage /mileage.
That would probably make more sense.
ceramic coatings change the index of refraction of the paint/clearcoat and reduces the gloss. I know of no ceramic coating that increases gloss.
UV protection is the funniest one to me. Even funnier are the people that believe it. No detailing product on Earth blocks UV’s.
The only thing mandatory to ceramic coating is decontamination paint... Polishing it is not mandatory... Right?
Only if you don't care how good the paint looks after the coating is applied, and/or don't care how well the coating performs, sure...
Feel free to skip the polishing step. 😅
Why the hell would you skip the most important part?
@@Erix7810 Just bought a new car and polished it before I put the ceramic coating on it.
@@jameslong4453I polish and coat new cars 2-3 times a month. Every time they need it!
I have a ceramic coating on my truck. Is it alright to use a synthetic clay towel on it when I do my six month maintenance wash.
I wouldn’t. You will likely mar the finish with that towel and if you’ve got the eye for swirl marks you will not be happy.
Going after those swirls with a polisher will remove the coating.

Are ceramic coating more susceptible to hard water spotting from sprinklers?
They’ll water spot just the same. Key is to wash those spots off asap.
Yes, they are.

Time for an Amazon products testing on false promises and value for the price…
I bought a new car last week. They tried to tack on $3,349 for ceramic coating.
Bring it to me! I’ll do it for $1,195.
What the ball park price of getting a ceramic coating?
In my area by a trusted IGL installer, about $800 and that includes the wheels.
Do you think you’ll do an in-depth review of Clean by Pan the Organizer?

Most new cars are ceramic coated from the dealership, it’s just a matter of whether or not you volunteered to pay extra for it.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤝
Seems I’ve started a trend about scam warnings 😂
Ceramic coating has made my car look worse! Anytime it rains or there is dew I get water beading, and the beads hold dust. When they dry out I get dust circles on the vehicle which are way more noticeable than just an even coating of dust. The car looks worse than cars sitting right beside it which have a fainter even coating of dust. So it end up washing more frequently.
Ceramic coatings are not worth it
Where's Pan with a comment?
When you say 10s of it covers 30 lol. You dont have to say 20s of amd 30s of lol 🤡
