I seem to remember crushed up charcoal was used to clean teeth historically. Don't quote me on that, but it does seem viable : mildly abrasive, little to no taste and widely available. I imagine it might even share some of the adsorptive properties of activated charcoal for improved cleaning.
Ckasp You’re actually right. Actually I remember my parents telling me that they used it growing up in the 80s. They often mentioned that they felt that charcoal paste did a better job than the toothpaste we use today.
My mom always told me that they burned down to charcoal some tortillas to clean their teeth when she and my uncles were childs. I tried one time a long ago and it cleaned my teeth pretty good and it just tasted like burned tortilla...
Great vid, always love to see things made from scratch as it shows 'real' chemistry. Instead of using lab ready, pure chemicals it shows the amazing pathways from nature to product and helps us see our roots. A little advice with your condenser setup though, have the input at the bottom and then the whole condenser will fill with water so there is more mass to absorb the heat and more area to absorb the heat from. I have been a chemist for quite some time and it was one of the first things we learnt in labs and our lab teacher would get annoyed if she saw someone with it set up like that.
I like these video so much more when he subjects other people to the things he has created. Don't get me wrong all the videos are great and full of info and I really enjoy the channel. But when other people have to experience the creations they are informational and funny.
honey is sort of an antibiotic. If you cut yourself badly and have nothing else.. put a shitload of honey into your wound. It will seal it up and keep you from bleeding out. Also: your immune system wont be overrun by it if you know what i mean
ImpGimp, that only works with pure honey, but in your mouth, it's going to get diluted by saliva and just be a high-concentration sugar mixture, perfect for bacteria. You'd have to slather on pure honey and let it sit for a minute or two for it to have that effect, and then you'd have to clean it off completely, or else you'd be leaving sugar on your teeth, defeating the whole purpose.
I heard ancient Egyptians teeth were not great because of the abbrasives. Medieval England toothpaste was not that great either since it contained honey which actually caused tooth rot and bad breath.
Fun fact: I collected that pig hair exactly 3 years and 1 day ago. I've had a list of projects since I first started this project 4 years ago, so I'm always looking for items that could be used and make anything on that list or items I've added to it since then.
What I've actually done for diy toothpaste was coconut oil (helps draw out gunk), baking soda, clay, activated charcoal and a bit of mint oil! It works really well and makes your teeth feel squeaky clean!
>paying double for some no-name toothbrush when you could just get a philips or similar for like $100 if they can afford to make it 75% off, the quality must not be that great from the start.
See how the light sticks in the background change with each person the green haired lady got the green light and the one got red and the other orange light.
Well, as a dentist student I learned a lot with this video. Thanks for bringing out so much information about our day to day oral hygiene routine and how important it is.
Dear how to make everything crew.. I so hope you guys can get major funding or a network behind you. This truly is magic, this chase of creation. I love it and it should never end
He's actually trying to get one now. I forget what it was called, but the pilot aired already, though they haven't told us the results if they've learned it yet. But if all goes well, they'll be able to produce a short tv series in addition to youtube!
Reverse the flow in your condenser. You not only want the coolest water flowing into the end of the hot streams path because this increases the difference in temperature for each point along both paths and allows for a higher total thermal transfer between them, but also because it will fill most of that air space in the top and obviously make it work as designed.
I've often heard people in the minimalist community go on about their homemade toothpaste which is made out of coconut oil and baking soda. Hearing a dentist say that a lack of flouride is bad for the teeth puts confidence in me about ignoring them.
Gonna copy paste my comment because it seems relevant. I like how the dentist said that every patient he has seen that didn't use fluoride toothpaste has a mouth full of cavities like that means that not using fluoride toothpaste guarantees a mouth full of cavities. Many people go years without brushing their teeth whatsoever without a mouthful of cavities, just because people who do not value dental hygiene finally show up to a dentist 20 years after their last visit does not mean that what you see in their norm. They wouldn't be seeing you if they weren't having an abnormal problem. How many people that use fluoride toothpaste does he see with mouthfuls of cavities? Because if fluoride in your toothpaste fixes all the problems we really don't have any need for routine dental care.
To add a small explanation as to why fluoride treatments isn't a requirement, you only need fluoride when your teeth are lacking it. If you have healthy teeth, then the fluoride is doing nothing. If your teeth are starting to become deficient you need fluoride, however you need very little and for almost everyone brushing once a month with fluoridated toothpaste would prevent that from ever being the issue. Many people naturally have healthy enough teeth that they can go their entire lives without brushing without having any notable tooth decay.
Is your water not flourinated? You don't actually need fluroide to come from toothpaste, there's more than enough flouride in your drinking water to support your teeth. Many people who use charcoal toothpaste use it because they want to avoid the bleaching agents found in commercial toothpastes. Some of my teeth are artificial implants (crazy rare genetic fluke and then resulting complications) that have been color-matched to my real teeth. I don't want a toothpaste to bleach my real teeth and throw off the match. Further, some of the skin grafts in my mouth are really sensitive to really acidic or really alkaline chemicals, so I really don't want a store-bought toothpaste.
I actually forgot about flourinated water since I personally live on a well. Flouride is naturally occurring in water, but not in significant enough levels to cause significant protection, 7 parts per million is considered enough to protect your teeth to a considerable level.
a little tip from a chemist: On the condensor, connect the cooling water the other way around that it flows from bottom to top. Firstly because then the whole condensor is filled and second the coldest point is at the the bottom of the distillation setup
Great video. And great product placement. It makes so much sense for your videos to be sponsored by the companies that makes these things commercially. Every one of your videos has essentially been a giant free ad for the industry being examined.
This is absolutely horrible lab advice. It's much, much, much safer to add acid to water than to do otherwise. A large portion of water enables dissipation of thermal energy (coming from water). When you add water to acid (which is denser than water) a thin layer of water forms near the surface, which reacts with acid and boils violently spurting acid (not harmless water) droplets everywhere.
other way around, water can boil on contact with the acid and splatter. Acid/base reactions are exothermic so it'll heat on contact with each other. water has a relatively high boiling point so it can absorb more of that heat before boiling. His splashes were from dropping the acid from too high up not from the reaction.
Uhh... totally got that bass ackwards my friend... Here's a phrase that might help: Do as you otter, add acid to water. The trouble here is that he wasn't just diluting an acid in water, he was conducting a reaction as well (other than the dissociation of the acid and formation of hydronium ions that happens when simply diluting an acid in water only) . Its been a long time since I last did a procedure like this but I suspect that: 1.) He should have been using a lower molarity sulfuric acid solution and 2.) He should have done the reaction in smaller batches within a thick-walled Erlenmeyer flask.... And dude seriously needs some PPE
Very nice video! c: In steam distillation the essential oils will be collected in the receiving flask not in the boiling one, but you have to extract it from the solution using an organic, apolar, solvent (like dichloromethane ore diethyl ether); this way you can achieve a good purity.
Try using a brückner apparatus for steam distillation next time because it really saves time and actually works much better and more effectively. If you need help with setting up an apparatus for steam distillation I could help you out because I wrote a a small thesis on the topic and had to figure out the process as well. If you need information just contact me and I would be happy to help.
your distilation cooling block at 11:30 has it water mounted backwards. The water should come from the bottom and exit through te top to prevent air in the chambre. In orther words it must flow down the tub with gravity but be pushed up the tube.
Out of curiosity, when the toothbruch commercial say it can last 2 weeks is that 2 weeks of constantly being on, 2 weeks of constant use or 2 weeks of used 4 mins a day?
I think you haven't extracted oil from the peppermint the way you've done it. The oil would've been on the other side of the setup, distilled and mixed with water. That explains why one tester tasted chlorophyll and not menthol. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
What about using a miswak stick? Not sure if that’s the correct term... but basically chewing a small twig that will separate into fibers as you chew it. I’ve read that lots of people of old used this method, all over the world. That and using urine as mouthwash!
The girl with the green hair was so chill about it compared to the other girls lol
Overall they were all pretty brave, considering the ingredients and how they described it taste...
To be fair, 2 of the girls did the testing for the makeup series, so at least those 2 knew what they were getting into.
yeah man i love girls that will put anytyhing in their mouths
Nice one Mikus
She's always chill 😭😭
The ad was really funny! Glad that it got approved.
How is this comment 20 mins old?
Patreon, my man. You should check it out and support some quality creators, even if it's just small amount.
Oh great. It was odd though. There was only one comment.
The biggest problem with Patreon is the platform itself. Otherwise there would be plenty creators I would support.

My mom always told me that they burned down to charcoal some tortillas to clean their teeth when she and my uncles were childs. I tried one time a long ago and it cleaned my teeth pretty good and it just tasted like burned tortilla...
El MalaMen but burned tortilla doesn’t taste good, it’s not really bad, but not good either
if you use charcoal directly it is not recommended, but when you use activated charcoal it is slightly more effective

Honey seems extremely counterproductive as far as teeth cleaning goes lol.
honey is sort of an antibiotic. If you cut yourself badly and have nothing else.. put a shitload of honey into your wound. It will seal it up and keep you from bleeding out. Also: your immune system wont be overrun by it if you know what i mean
Honey is like the sugar version of salt. Too little salt, dead. Too much salt, dead. Some salt, bacteria lives.
I'm going to kill these bacteria by feeding them so hard, they die!
ImpGimp, that only works with pure honey, but in your mouth, it's going to get diluted by saliva and just be a high-concentration sugar mixture, perfect for bacteria.
You'd have to slather on pure honey and let it sit for a minute or two for it to have that effect, and then you'd have to clean it off completely, or else you'd be leaving sugar on your teeth, defeating the whole purpose.
weehawk yeah lol
Careful about abrasiveness. Too much could remove your enamel. The abrasives gotta be ground into really really fine powders and don't brush too hard.
I heard ancient Egyptians teeth were not great because of the abbrasives. Medieval England toothpaste was not that great either since it contained honey which actually caused tooth rot and bad breath.

ImNoob How is it non vegan? Those pigs were clearly free range and looked to be in no pain at all. Completely cruelty-free.
Vegans cant use animal by products or products. I think you're confusing them with vegetarian
Some vegans use animal products outside of food, some don't. It really just depends on the person.
This isn't about veganism. It's about making things from scratch, which historically has included using a lot of animal products.

Andy, a lab safety tip: Never add acid to water, always add water to acid. Dripping acid into water splashes it everywhere as you saw.
Kaleer101 This isn't true. It's much more dangerous to add water to acid. He did this correct, even though there were MANY other lab safety concerns.
This is absolutely horrible lab advice. It's much, much, much safer to add acid to water than to do otherwise. A large portion of water enables dissipation of thermal energy (coming from water).
