I go to Norway next week and would choose Ace Pro but it`s not available at the moment so the Action 5 is now lying on my table. (I already use IPhone and GoPro but they are not the best solution for snorkeling with orca`s). Did you test the supernight mode at lowlight conditions ? I`m unsure which mode is better (standard / night) as i`m not able to test under conditions it before I jump in the water.
@@TripsDivesbyBenjaminKrueger Seems like the Ace Pro 2 has been very popular since its release and delivery is a bit delayed. Unfortunate. But the Osmo Action 5 Pro is a very good choice and a solid action camera by all means. Regarding SuperNight, check out the section starting at 8:12 minutes. There is some example footage of the SuperNight mode used in our dark Swiss lakes and it's quite impressive. I would probably use that on your upcoming trip.
straight out of camera insta ace 2 pro, but i'm concerned about the 8 bit codec and color correction limitations. anyone has experience, vs 10 bit go pro footage, for example ? thank you
@@GuidoValdata You can definitely do more with 10bit footage than you can with 8biit footage. That said, if the camera i.e. didn't record any red (because you were on a deep dive) a 10bit color depth will not be able to recover that any better than with 8bit. 10bit can simply do more tweaking with what you've recorded. As you're saying the Ace Pro 2 looks good straight out of camera, so no need for major color adjustments. Generally speaking I would prefer an action camera that gives me good enough footage straight out of the camera with 8 bit rather than a 10bit camera that needs a lot of post corrections. This is obviously very subjective and totally depending on what you want to do with the footage and how much time and effort you are willing to spend correcting the footage/what expectations you have/how experience you are with color grading and corrections. Hope that helps?
May I suggest a different methodology for this comparison? Using Blackmagic or Filmic with log profile on the iPhone while putting the GoPro and others on default settings is not a fair contest. Please use the Apple default camera app or have the action cams on their most customizable settings (low sharpening, customer white balance or native WB). It would be great to have a super wide angle comparison. Use the Divevolk wide lens. Add an AOI UWL-03 or Inon UFL-G140 to the action cams. Thanks!
@crazybungee thank you for your feedback and suggestion mate. I actually wasn't using any third party app on the iPhone (native iPhone camera app used) and I didn't use LOG other than in the few shots that are marked as recorded in LOG to compare it to the LOG footage of the other cameras. I'm working on getting my hands on some AOI wet lenses. As soon as I have them I'll share some comparison shots.
Thank you for this great video , as a scuba diver and underwater content creator that currently using Hero 9 i decided to upgrade to the DJI or the Ace pro 2 . the one thing that i truly don't understand and i ask in many forms is if using this cameras with a diving case require red filter? you did not mention anything about it in all your reviews . can you please let me know? i am always using diving case and dive in oceans as well as in the Cenotes in Mexico . Thank you
@nissimbarokas427 thank you for your comment mate. The modern action cameras all claim they don't need red filters for the use underwater anymore. They say their Auto WB algorithms have improved and are doing a good job even underwater. Worth mentioning is that the Osmo Action 5 Pro has a color temperature sensor integrated in the camera which determines the Auto WB used. The other two don't have that, but use other methods to auto WB the underwater footage.
Love these compares videos! I’ve been a GoPro girl since the 3 and added the Divevolk immediately after seeing what it can do on your Egypt trip. I doubt I’ll upgrade my GoPro 12, but I do love the simplicity, I own so many accessories, and at least half the divers on any given boat have GoPros. The flexibility of the iPhone to quickly adjust exposure and zoom on the fly and the ability to shoot macro leave all the others in the dust though! I brought my Divevolk for the Mexico cenotes trip, I wanted the light beams and the divers in darkness, the dynamic range is soooo much better! I’m bringing my GoPro for Mexico Mag Bay sardine run though, I’ll barely have time to frame the action, no macro haha, my camera will get banged around a lot, I’ll be out on the water for 8+ hours so changing batteries is easier/better than recharging my phone. Am I wrong? I’ll probably bring both jajaja.
@rebeccadarling5894 thanks for sharing your story and experience with both the GoPro and Divevolk with us. 🙏🏻 Great to see that you are making use of both of these systems in the appropriate and best ways. Love it! 😍 And yes, I would probably bring both on that sardine run trip. I mean, you never know right? And you'll have your phone with you already anyways... 😉
Thank you so much for this, Matthias - an OA/AP/GoPro footage comparison review is already pretty sweet, but adding the iPhone footage for reference is absolutely great. Could you give your take on which, between the Ace Pro 2 and the Osmo Action 5 pro, you would go with for cave diving video? From what I can tell the AP2 does a better job with low light, but the OA5Pro does do some miracle work on filtering out particles in the water (which is a big factor in submerged caves)
@rubenswieringa Thanks for your feedback and nice words buddy. Appreciate it. 🙏🏻 Regarding your question, I think both, the AP2 and the OA 5 Pro will do a good job in a cave diving environment. The Ace Pro 2 does an outstanding job with eliminating corner distortion and softness. I can imagine that being an important factor when filming scenes inside caves. So I think I would lean a little more towards the AP2. But I think you can't go wrong with either of those cameras.
Osmo Action 5 Pro or Ace PRO 2. Ace is having problem with minimal distance to focus can you check this? Osmo in this test was on wrong FOV meyby ? Can you check this 2 cams with file bitrate (both shwithed to max) and compare zoomed same fottage ?
The Ace Pro 2 has a similar minimal focusing distance as the other action cams. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. FOV on the Osmo Action 5 Pro was set to Standard (Dewarp). It was a software issue that has been resolved with the recent firmware update by DJI.
Which action camera has the smallest focal length, and can it be used to take pictures of nudibranchs? Additionally, can the 2x clarity zoom on the Ace Pro 2 capture closer videos or pictures of nudibranchs?
@mateoskapul3873 first of all I wouldn't recommend an action camera to capture small stuff like nudibranchs. Yes it is doable, but you will need additional gear like macro wet lenses. If macro video/photo is of interest to you, I highly recommend to look at a decent smartphone with the Divevolk system (they are having a cool 20% Black Friday offer going at the moment: bit.ly/3K0PyFU). Even the 2x clarity zoom of the Ace Pro is not enough to take good macro shots in my opinion.
Hmmm... would be very interesting to know more details. What caused the water intrusion. Did it happen right at the beginning of the dive or somewhere in the middle of it? Were the appropriate adapters used / screen protectors removed? It seems like a lot of failures in a very short amount of time. I've been using the Divevolk system for more than 3 years and have done at least 200 dives on it without any problems. More than that, I know 1000s of divers using the Divevolk system and such failures with water intrusion are very rare. Would be great if you can share some more details on the incidents with us. Thanks.
How come you rate the iPhone better than the GoPro in the low light test or at 10:36 with that washed out, red tone? Are the videos switched by mistake?
@willisauer488 the section you're referring to is not the low light test. In the mentioned section I talk about the general image quality. Overall and not limited to one specific shot or scenario, the iPhone produces nicer looking footage than the GoPro in my opinion. The low light test section starts at 08:14.
Where can I find the firmware content regarding the Osmo Action 5 Pro image quality improvements that you mention at around 11:25 in this video? It would be helpful if you could give me the URL.
@CosmicBlueWalker it's within the latest firmware upgrade for the Osmo Action 5 Pro. I update the firmware using the DJI Mimo app, the standard app to connect your Osmo Action cameras to your smartphone.
The Gopro 13 has possibility to use Gopro labs FW with unique features for divers, example: select refractive index (RI) of water, Lock White balance, select reduce Red color, select reduce blue color, Increase Bitrate to 200Mbps, Select Wide Gamut Native sensor, select log encoding for more dynamic range, select Noise Reduction control, just to name a few, only by using QR Code underwater.... Also the Iphone 16 Pro Max is able to film in 4K at 120fps Dolby Vision With Dolby Vision, creators can take advantage of everything that HDR has to offer - stunning brightness, wider depth of color, improved contrast, and rich details - but with the confidence that what they create on their screen is what will be seen on the screens of their viewers on Dolby Vision enabled devices.
@Nando_Diver Yes, but same time GoPro has unique function to switch off or restart during diive and/ or lost / corrupt file .. Its just unreliable this is critical for diving. This plus 3 years old small sensor / processor.....
Thanks for your comment and input mate. Sure, GoPro Labs can give you a lot more options to work with your GoPro, but in my opinion it's not for the everyday diver, because it requires them to download a special firmware, create custom QR-Code, laminate them and take them with you on the dives. Too much extra effort for a "regular" diver. From my experience divers using an action cam simply want to use it straight out of the box. More ambitious underwater image makers will usually go for a larger, more flexible system like i.e. a mirrorless camera with more options and easier controls. GoPro Labs is a nice gimmick, but not made for the masses.
@@MatthiasLebo You probably need to contact the manufacturer's technical support, you may have moisture in the camera which will affect the electronics over time. When you activate PureVideo at 4K 60p the camera even warns you that it will might get very hot and you should make sure it stays well ventilated, which of course is impossible inside a dive housing. The fogging is simply moisture that was trapped inside the housing when closing it (I don't have an air-conditioned room to assemble my gear here in Zurich) and that condensates on the inside of the port when the temperature inside the housing reaches a certain level.
