      @@IFrancyISantosI 😂 well if your not interested in selling your work some cheap modeling clay can get you started for about $10-$20 so it definitely doesn’t have to be expensive.

    Great video Andrew, I'm a big fan! A just started to sculpt this year and your videos have been super helpful! One thing I would add to this video is in stone carving you need protective gear for you lungs, that stone powder is super dangerous to breath! Also, working with power tools you need much more caution and expertise! And you need a place that is not inside of your house too... That dust is insane! Clay you can work in your bedroom on a table with absolutely no worries, if you use oil clay is even easier and cleaner...

    Nice video
    Very informative.
    One advice I could give. In school I did a few sculptures from porous/spongy cement blocks. Not sure how they're called in US.
    We call them YTONG - it's one of the brands making them.
    Material is easy to handle. Can be cut with grinder but also with hammer and chisel. It's also inexpensive. You may even get some blocks for free as construction waste.
    I'd say it might be good intermediate step to reduction sculpting.
    Possibly good

    Drew, this is a ghost from your past, Brad Gibbons. I stumbled onto your channel via Proko. Dude! I've had nothing to do with your development as an artist or teacher, but I'm stinking proud of you! I got sick of grading essays and decided to get back into art (thus Proko). I've been teaching some art classes this year, and it's been a blast. I had an idea to have you come be a guest speaker. Imagine my dismay when I saw that you moved!! I'm stoked for your barn renovation, though. My wife and I flip properties, so that's exciting for you. Anyway, I'm stoked that I found your channel. Let's try to reconnect and catch up.

      @@bradgibbons1062 Hey great to see you in the comments! I would have loved to come do a demo or something but yeah Utah got crazy expensive and I couldn’t keep up! That’s so cool you’ve been able to get into and teach art and Proko is indeed a great resource. So glad you left a comment!

    Have you ever worked in Soap stone?
    The middle ground between Clay & "Stone" is polystyrene aka ;Styrofoam its advantages are- it allows you to make HUGE statues that weigh next to nothing (it is also far cheaper than expensive marbles etc plus if you make a mistake you can usually glue a piece on, if you'd cut too much off)
    Finally if your not happy with the finish you can always paint it or take a big mould & cast into a more strong permanent material, such as plaster or fibre glass

    • @AndrewJosephKeith
      @AndrewJosephKeith  Місяць тому

      I haven't worked with soap stone as I don't like softer stone. If I'm going to go through the trouble of sculpting something in stone I don't want it to scratch easily.
      I've done a styrofoam sculpture for aluminum casting which was a fun process and I have seen people do large monumental size sculptures in styrofoam so great point!

    • @nigeldonaldson1647
      @nigeldonaldson1647 Місяць тому

      @@AndrewJosephKeith fair point about Soap stone, BUT its finish is beautiful to my eye, very similar to marble. it's my ambition to carve a Soap stone Conan Sword, some day if it can be done.
      for me personally I coudnt be doing with chiseling hard stone (which can damage the tendons in the arms from the vibrations using a bolster) after all you can achieve just as impressive a look from simple clay, incidently I use house insulation foam (carefully) because that's cheaper than Styrofoam(especially when I fish scraps out of Skips/dumpsters)

    As I imagine you would know, when it comes to Bronze, there is always the cold casting method, where you simply add bronze powder to resin (it's true that bronze powder isnt cheap BUT it is far cheaper than the lost wax method, and above all it looks authentically like real bronze)

    • @AndrewJosephKeith
      @AndrewJosephKeith  Місяць тому

      Good point! Cold casting or resin mixed with bronze is a more budget option but doesn't have the exact feel or sound of an actual bronze sculpture when closely observed. Still a great option though!

      @@AndrewJosephKeith When properly mixed with a drop of black pigment, I can't tell the difference between foundry cast bronze & cold cast obviously cold casting is a...skin, not thick or solid but I don't mind that

    I started with clay but making the molds cost a bunch of money and it takes practice and time just to make the molds actually usable. Now the sculpture is destroyed. lol! That’s why I just started doing digital sculpting and I just print them out.

    • @AndrewJosephKeith
      @AndrewJosephKeith  Місяць тому +1

      @@pawnzrtasty that’s another option! And if the design is good enough there are places to sell that 3D model though it’s typically much cheaper than traditional sculptures.

      @pawnzrtasty Місяць тому

      @ i personally don’t sell anything but there are tons of patreons that sell models ready for print. For tabletop gaming and comic book stuff. I like having my stuff up around the house even though the wife tries to keep it in my studio! lol I have reached a size threshold with how big the sculptures or prints can be around 3ft
