    Great video, I've really been enjoying your Jane Austen July content! All my favourite adaptations are in this video. Nothing will ever beat the 1995 adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and of Sense and Sensibility for me. I also really enjoyed the Lizzie Bennett diaries when they came out but haven't watched the series since! Also due a rewatch for me are Clueless and Lost in Austen which I've both only seen once.

      Thanks Claudia :) I'd definitely recommend Emma Approved if you liked the Lizzie Bennet diaries - it was a great series. Clueless and Lost in Austen are hilarious too.

    Just finished Mansfield Park and although it was a reread, it was so long ago that it was all new to me again. Words almost fail me on how much I adored it and yet again you have spurred me to pulling out more classics! Il be watching the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice this week and then Emma or possibly Lady Susan if I can get hold of a copy quickly enough.

    There's a brazilian telenovela called Orgulho e Paixão (or Pride and Passion) and it's a retelling of Pride and prejudice, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Sense and sensibility, Mansfield Park and Lady Susan all at once and is set in Brazil, 1910. It's silly and awkwardly dramatic, but I enjoy watching it hahaha

    colin didnt portray darcy as shy because darcy was not shy. He was not shy or social akward. Darcy didnt interact easily with strangers because he didnt care enough, because he didnt needed and he refuse to pretend he care about things that he did not, (he's against falsehood) because people would nature come to him and talk to him without him needed to do the same and make conversation, he never had to struggle to do the same and no one would scold him for it due to his social position. His money and power were enough to attrack others to him and forgive his defects, but no... darcy as not shy

    • @kevinrussell1144
      @kevinrussell1144 2 роки тому +2

      You are correct. He was NOT shy nor socially awkward. Macfeydan is too meek and hang-dog. What Lizzie manages to do is make him (Darcy) see himself as other, less sociably prominent people do, and to understand why they might think him a snob. He is proud, but he's not stupid, and his experience with Georgiana has helped prepare him for realizing that first impressions are often incomplete or even false. Firth is the better (more true to the material) Darcy.

  • @fionaconnor4908
    @fionaconnor4908 6 років тому +16

    Matthew macfayden is my preferred Darcy as well! I feel like Colin Firth was given enough time to be the proud and haughty darcy while Matthew Macfayden didn’t have enough scenes before Darcy proposes to be proud and serious so for me Colin firth does proud Darcy better but Matthew Macfayden does heartsick Darcy better! Combine both halves and you have the perfect Mr Darcy! 💖

    • @katiejlumsden

      I totally agree! I often think that about those two adaptations in general - the perfect adaptation would be a combination of parts from each.

      I love Lost In Austen variation/adaptation of pride & prejudice; I rewatch it quite often, purely for the escapism. The cast is so good too and all perform the characters so well. I love the 1995 and 2005 Pride and Prejudice tv/ film adaptations in different ways. Johnny Miller for me is probably the best Mr Knightly, and loved the actress who played Emma ( in 2009) she just played her so well.

    I liked the 1995 Sense and Sensibility. I like Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Kate Winslit, and Alen Rickman. They all did a good job in the movie. I never thought of pairing Emma Thompson with Hugh Grant but it works. I also enjoyed the 1995 Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. I will take a look at some of the ones you mentioned that I have not watched, yet. I enjoy Clueless too. Enjoy your day.

      To be honest, I'm not sure if I've read enough to make a video about them, and so far the only one I've read and absolutely loved, that I'd whole-heatedly recommend, is Longbourn by Jo Baker! (At least so far - I'm only half way through.)

      I just finished Ronald Frame's "Havisham," which was okay but not as good as "Longbourn." And I am about to read a couple of Bronte-inspired books on my shelf: "Mr. Rochester" and "Nelly Dean."

    I'm always surprised when someone likes one or the other of the two most recent Persuasions, 1995 and 2007, but NOT the other. I LOVE both of them, and think the lead actress in both of them really resembles Anne of the book. Oh, and I completely agree about Lady Susan/Love and Friendship.

    Sense & Sensibility (1995) is my absolute fave, so much so I haven't been able to watch the 2008 adaptation but I suppose after I re-read the book I should give it a shot! Were there things you didn't like about 1995's?

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  6 років тому +3

      To be honest it's more than I love the 2008 adaptation than that I dislike the 1995 one precisely. The 2005 one is clearly very influenced by the 1995 adaptation (especially in the presentation of Margaret as a character), but it's longer, and much more in depth. My one big issue with the 1995 adaptation is that it cuts the scene where Willoughly goes to see Eleanor when Marianne is ill, because that's my favourite scene in the whole book. Also, while I think Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson are good actresses, I think Hattie Morahan and Charity Wakefield are closer to the characters in the book, or at least to my interpretation of them, and for me they capture the youth and naivety of both characters better.

    • @MioneWeasley545
      @MioneWeasley545 6 років тому

      These are great points! I love how the 1995 version builds up Brandon and Edward's characters and relationships which I think was an improvement but I suppose I didn't really think about Willoughby's protrayal as I was biased against him hahaha. For sure, the casting of the sisters isn't perfect but I suppose I love Emma Thompson so much I overlooked it (like how I think Alan Rickman was too old to play Snape but he was also perfect to me so I gave it a pass!). I will definitely let go of my attachment to 1995 to give 2008 a watch and let myself fall in love with the new cast!

    I've only watched Clueless and the adaption of Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds. I didn't know Clueless was an adaption of Emma when I first watched it. The second time I spent most my time trying to match the characters in the film with the book.

    I've always preferred Matthew Macfadyen as D'Arcy. He is very kind looking and his social awkwardness doesn't come across as forced. I don't know if this counts but I watched Becoming Jane SO MANY times. And I know that Anne Hathaway's accent is way off, and it's somewhat really disrespectful to Jane Austen for placing her genius and literary focus on Lefroy, and even her interaction with Ann Radcliffe was atrocious, but for some reason the music and scenery really made up for it and I ended up really loving it because it sort of put me in that time and place (even if it was pretty fictionalized)

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  6 років тому +1

      I definitely agree about Matthew Macfadyen. I have mixed feelings on Becoming Jane - it's a fun enjoyable film, but it always bothers me that they make Jane Austen run off with Tom Lefroy - it's there's one thing we've learnt from Jane Austen's novels, it's that she thought elopement was a very, very bad thing!

    • @rachelport3723
      @rachelport3723 6 років тому +2

      I don't think Darcy's pride would allow him to show such vulnerability at any point in the novel, proud or heartsick.

  • @rachelport3723

    Do you not like the 1983 Mansfield Park? I think Sylvestra LaTousel and Anna Massey top a strong cast, and it's very true to the book. And here's a bit of trivia - a very young Jonny Lee Miller is one of Fanny's brothers in Portsmouth.

      Rachel Port wait wait so he is in 2 Mansfield Park adaptations AND plays George Knightley?! 😍

    • @rachelport3723
      @rachelport3723 6 років тому +1

      Yup. Does he get a medal for that? And Mr. Knightly wore a waistcoat previously worn by Mr. Bennet in 1995.

    • @CarolynsReadingRamblings
      @CarolynsReadingRamblings 6 років тому +1

      Rachel Port He should! And another for his general affinity for playing literary figures and authors in general because in addition to those roles he also has played Lord Byron, a sort of modern version of Jonathan Harker, and is currently Sherlock Holmes and if you count stage as well has played Dr Frankenstein and his monster (and others I am unfamiliar with I am sure)😍. And yes! I love wardrobe trivia bits like that 😃

    • @rachelport3723
      @rachelport3723 6 років тому +1

      Mr. Knightly proposes in it, and Mr. Bennet says good-bye to Lydia and Wickham in it. And I noticed it before I knew that most of the wardrobe for P & P had been left in the stock wardrobe. Sometimes I think I do too much of this stuff. :)

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  6 років тому +3

      How fun that Johnny Lee Miller is in those two Mansfield Parks! He's such a great actor. But no Rachel, I'm afraid I didn't really enjoy the 1983 Mansfield Park - it's much more true to the book and there were a few things I liked about it, but in all honesty I found it a little bit boring without any interior nature of the book or the full examination of Fanny's thoughts. Also (and I know this is just a personal thing) I tend not to especially enjoy films or television adaptations from the 1960s-80s because the production value is a lot lower than the 1990s-now, and it's hard for me to take anyone seriously when they're wearing that much unsubtle make-up!

  • @DanielFletcherFlute

    Interesting to see your thoughts on this. I actually strongly disliked the Northanger Abbey film, mostly because I didn't like how they portrayed Henry Tilney's father. For whatever reason, I felt he was misrepresented, mostly due to his angry countenance, whereas in the book I found him proud and conceited, bug not always outwardly rude or scary. They also made it so General Tilney found Catherine in Mrs. Tilney's room, while in the novel it was Henry and that also bugged me. I thought it was brilliantly cast and well written, there were just some small changes that REALLY rubbed me the wrong way.

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  6 років тому +1

      I suppose, as Northanger Abbey is one of my lesser favourite Jane Austen novels, the changing of the little details doesn't annoy me as much. The cast is just so great!

    I love Pride and Prejudice 2005 because of the family. They are so much more loving and warm, and I love this version of Mrs Bennet. You understand why she is so worried and I feel that Lizzy understands her mother and loves her. You also have a feeling that Mr Bennet loves his wife (which is not the case in the book or in BBC version). Even Mary here is just an awkward girl and I like her!

      but thats my problem with the film as well, the relantionships and dinamics there are so empty and plane. Everything is happy and fine where in the book theres alot more dept. Kitty and mary are neglected
      while lydia is the favorite from the mother, lizzy from the father and jane has the care because of her beauty and hopes for a great match, the parents marriage is a disaster and that is put in parallel to the marriage that elizabeth is going to do for herself and the marriage that lydia will do as well (more similar to her parents), theres so much more nuances and in that movie is lost and everything is just... happy and plain

    My favourite P&P adaptation is the 1995 Colin Firth version, of course, but I am also a fan of the 2005 one! Another adaptation I like is the 1940 Laurence Olivier film...full of slapstick and very farcical, but incredibly enjoyable nonetheless. :-)

    Yes, I'm happy to trot across the minefield. The Joe Wright version of P&P is such a breathtakingly beautiful bit of movie-making that it stands on its own. Yes, I love the book deeply and madly but that's a different creative act and only a pedant worries about movie versions being 'true' to a novel. Numerous adaptations are wonderful things without taking or adding anything the their source.

    Am I the only Austen fan that hates Lost in Austen? Just wondering. I watched it because I heard it mentioned on top adaptations lists and was very disappointed. I disliked the main character and I didn't find it amusing or funny that she enters P&P and ruins everything. Supposedly, she is a big fan of P&P yet she doesn't have any idea how to behave. She annoyed me quite a lot.
    I love Lady Susan and I love the adaptation. I love that you included that on your list. However, 1995 P&P is the BEST Austen adaptation of all time. The Keira Knightley version is a horror. The worst Lizzy Bennett of all time. HATE.

    Did you watch the 2020 Emma. I absolutely hated it. The characterization was so off It infuriated me. Aged Mr Woodhouse actually jumps down the stairs in a sprightly manner?? Mr Knightley comes off more as Frank Churchill would. He chases after Emma's carriage... Sensible Mr Knightley would never do something so foolishly passionate. Emma and Mr Woodhouse come off as rude and obnoxious. I wondered if the director actually read Emma
    2009 Emma with Johnny Lee Miller and Romola Garai is my favourite. I felt like Johnny Lee Miller was the perfect Mr Knightley and they captured the essence of Emma and Knightley and their comfortable friendship perfectly....Come to think of it Johnny Lee Miller did a great job of Edmund in Mansfield Park as well. Although I disliked both Mansfield park adaptations that I watched I particularly hated the characterization of Fanny in one as a forceful and rebellious girl.
    2007 Sense and sensibility I loved the Colonel Brandon in this adaptation I felt he was perfectly cast. I wasn't sold on Dan stevens as Edward Ferrars. I love Dan stevens but something was off for me in his portrayal of Edward.

    • @katiejlumsden

      So, the 2009 Emma is my favourite, but I did actually really enjoy the 2020 Emma - I thought it was great fun (though Emma is my least read Austen and I haven't read it for 5 years or so, so I probably wouldn't notice inaccuracies) - I will say that I'd definitely consider obnoxiousness to be true to the Emma of the book though! Totally agree about the 1999 Mansfield Park - I like Johnny Lee Miller, but everything else is all wrong!

    I didn't like the 2005 Pride and Prejudice even though the cinematography was superb. I much preferred the 1995 TV version. I just Timothy Dalton had played Darcy in his prime. He could pull it off, I believe. I did enjoy Pride and Prejudice and Zombies hehehe.
    I did like Clueless and liked all Emma adaptations I have seen except the last one where the humor sometimes fall flat for me though it had its moments.
    I still haven't seen any film or TV adaptation that does justice to Persuasion so I didn't like the Persuasion adaptations.
    Haven't seen the 2008 Sense and Sensibility but have seen older ones. I liked the 1995 film.
    I did not like the Mansfield Park adaptations I have seen so it is like Persuasion all over again.
    Seen only one Northanger Abbey adaptation and it was okay but it is my least favorite Jane Austen novel so I also couldn't care less hehehe.
