  • Flight Mini JB Bass - Fitting Flatwound Strings - Do These Fit?
    I have a go at fitting the MBLS Gold Tone Micro Bass Flatwound strings to my Flight Mini JB Bass. Technicallt these strings are designed for a 25" scale bass with a piezo pickup so in theory they shouldn't work....... but do they?

    I somehow managed to miss this video - the string change I’ve been waiting for! Great to see there is an option that works, and from the comments it looks like Daddario as well. Informative video as ever, thank you!

    Again another brilliant video, hugely informative & yes choice of strings, brand, material, type & guage is such a wormhole of preference, quality & affordability ! Even known a few "snobs" !

      @@UkuleleWales yeah I can remember when strings didn't cover a wall in a music store ! And you also didn't have to worry about dodgy fakes.

    I have the J & D (Jack & Danny) mini JB. I too have always preferred flat wound strings. After much research into string lengths etc, I decided on a set of Picato short scale flats. Like you the only worry was the E string, which would have wound too much of the unbound string onto the tuning peg. Following a tip I saw somewhere on UA-cam I fitted a high mass bridge which took up just a enough of the excess length to allow me to fit the E string with no more than half a revolution of actual string around the tuner . All the other strings were no problem at all.

      Thanks for the great info Alan. That sounds like a great solution and I am hoping to upgrade a couple of bridges at some point. I also read of a suggestion to drill trough to make the string a “string through” and this also solved the issue but this was on a bass guitar 👍

    I put Daddario flat wound ecb81s Chromes on all of my basses. They fit the 23 inch scale and the tension is unbelievable! I have a Fender mpb-33 mini bass and I have a Tiny Boy J bass and a flight jazz bass. The strings brought all of them to life! Believe it or not but I truly believe the strings I am using are the best possible string to use. Also you won’t have to worry about the string unwinding as the string fits with still leaving a bit a silk wrapping left for stability! Trust me! Also on the E string you need to wind it down the entire post so the string break angle is correct 👍🏻 and I’m sure you may know that you can not use strings with a nylon core.

      Thanks for the info Chris, we really must have an online chat about basses very soon! Since I tried (and failed) with the Ernie Ball Slinky Flatwounds I’ve stayed away from the regular strings. Maybe I will try the D’addarios on your recommendation. Yes, I knew about the nylon core and I’m a bit gutted about the messy E string withers but it’s still working perfectly well. Thanks as always for the great advice, I’ll try and plan a “bass strings” live soon if you fancy coming on screen for a chat - it’s all very simple. 👍

      Perhaps you have checked them out in the meantime too?

      Do you buy the “long scale” set? The 5 string set? And do you match them E slot to E string or use the low B in the E position for tension?

    Hey Rach, you should have some of your friends pick them up when they're over here and then bring them to you. Don't know where you are over there in Wales, but I do have friends that go there for scientific meetings and if you tell me where you are I will see if something can be arranged

    Not sure if it affects the sound of the bass, but you appear to still have the protective plastic cover over the pickups.

      Hi Brent, it didn’t seem to affect the sound at all. I wasn’t keeping the bass at the point of making the video hence why I left the plastic on.

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  7 місяців тому

      Great question but no, you can’t put bass string on a Flight Pathfinder. The scale is too short and the strings will be just to big for the hard wear.
