How can u tell if thermosatat is faulty

You can tell if the thermostat is faulty by checking if it doesn't respond when you adjust the temperature, if the display is blank or unlit, or if the AC turns on and off too quickly (short cycling). Also, try replacing the batteries or resetting it to see if that fixes the issue.

Mine is short cycling every few seconds

Short cycling every few seconds usually means your AC is low on refrigerant or the thermostat is faulty. Check the thermostat first, and if that's not it, you probably need a professional to check the refrigerant levels. Feel free to fill out the form here if you'll see that you need an HVAC tech to fix the issue: homecaprice.com/hvac-technician/

It's so annoying as I can't access my own furnace. It's cycling on and off and I can't stop it with the thermostat and my landlord is away.
My filter needs changing but in the meantime, on and off it goes, I guess forever. Such a dumb design fail.

That sounds super frustrating! If you can't get to the furnace, you might try turning off the AC breaker to stop the cycling for now. Hope your landlord can fix it soon!
