- In this video I do a ten year review on the 26 inch campers axe from Estwing. I show some splitting and felling with the Estwing axe as well as small branch trimming and stake pounding. This Estwing axe is over ten years old and has proven to be a great addition to my camp gear .

I’ve had the shorter version for over forty years and love it. ❤❤
Just cut my finger on mine taking the sheath off LOL. These things sharpen up nicely. Mine is razor sharp at the moment.
I've had one since 1980, its been everywhere and well used, keeps a good edge with a basic file and a small fine stone, the exposed steel handle on mine is lashed with 1/4'' cotton rope, better control with finer work.
I have a geological hammer from estwing and even i have used in rocks, it lasts forever, and also i have a friend that have a normal hammer that bought in a flea market 30 years ago, and it keep working, so, someone use his hammer before and then he boughts it and uses for another 30 years. Its indestructible. Greatings from México
I love my estwings. I have all three sizes. I will say though I tend to use my bow saw more than my axes and hatches for most everything.
You just helped me decide which axe to buy, thanks!
I have one. They’re excellent. Super sharp right off the shelf too. I sharpen mine with light filing and some medium grit sand paper and it takes almost NO effort at all to cut with it.
Only possible downside is that the blade is very narrow so it’s EASY to bury the blade deep into something. Then you have to monkey with getting the blade back out.
Time, is the great medium that proves the value of many things.
I've handled several of these Estwing 26 inch Camping Axes and every time I thought they are an excellent design.
Now your insightful 10 year test video is the mittagating factor that leads me to buy one for my Camping survival needs!
Might want to look up the word "mitigating" lol.
my estwing has dropped a thousand tipi poles, done brush clearing and split kindling for a hundred fires. best investment i have ever made in a hand tool. i also find it holds a better edge than my craftsman axe.
I borrowed it to a friend. He was using it to split unseasoned oak. When it got lodged in a piece of wood, he tried to knock it out with another large piece of oak. Im actually surprised it didn't sustain more damage.
I've owned that axe since 1999 and if you keep that thin hatchet head sharp it cuts great. Doesn't have the weight of a splitting axe but has speed and lightweight. It's a camping axe for sure
Music caught me completely off guard - I was waiting for a "REV UP YOUR ENGINES!" followed by car noises. Scotty the Mechanic uses this song as his title intro in all his videos haha.
Cheers though - I came here for a reason; I just got myself a 26" Estwing, and while I'm confident it'll hold up for now, I did indeed wonder how long it'd last me realistically. You definitely answered that. Thank you!

It'll last through any reasonable use.
I've had mine since 2008.
Paint is all gone and it has a patina like his, but it's still going strong.
Bought the blue handle one in 1982 when I was 32. Camped from Canada through the States till bottom of Mexico.
Two years ago bought the black version
How often did you use it ? And would you recommend for home defense ? My country doesn't allow guns.
Never used either one. First one was actually for self defense because I could travel with camping equipment and an axe. For fires I just used dead wood all the time no chopping. Second axe I bought was for a 72 hour emergency kit and you could use it for security. Lastly I'm a retired carpenter and I used a lot of Estwing tools over the years. Never broke one, still have some 25 year old hammers from estwing. All steel is good for demolition. Here is one possible problem. If you live in an apartment in a city and you have an axe and you hit somebody with it you will have to prove to the authorities why you own an axe in a city if it was not for self-defense. In my country you cannot carry any kind of weapon for self-defense but you can have the exact same weapon like an axe or a knife if you can prove that you actually need it. So if you have the act with your camping equipment like I do in your apartment then you're okay but if you just have an axe sitting by your door as a self-defense weapon that might be a different story with your authorities

I like the way you’re thinking. In a country with no legal gun ownership, I think selecting an agricultural tool for defense is a good idea. Most places have restrictions on knife blade length and swords are usually very restricted also since they are intended as weapons. That said, axes and machetes are “farming tools” and there are very few regulations on those anywhere. That said, I own this axe and I own a machete. While an axe may have some limited historical use as a weapon, they are best against defenseless and motionless prey, like trees. You can use one of these to behead chickens or rabbits too, but they aren’t ideal for hand to hand combat. They are relatively long while the cutting edge is rather short in comparison. They tend to be heavier at the end making them slower to swing too. They do LOOK rather intimidating, though. Still, I think a better choice is a machete. In relation to the length, they have a long cutting edge (nearly the entire length, compared to an axe), they are lighter and the weight is more evenly distributed than an axe-making them faster to swing and recover. Also, in very close proximity, you can place one hand behind the blade with the other on the handle and slice with it, that’d be nearly impossible with an axe during a fight. If you need to defend yourself with an agricultural tool, I’d recommend a machete.
@@JDrewism I believe he is not from the U.S., as in the U.S. you can own a gun solely for selfdefense and be fine, so long as it truly was used for selfdefense. How much more an axe? 😁 I'm guessing he is in Canada? Or possibly UK. I remember people in UK telling me that it is illegal to carry any knife (we were talking about multitools and also ones with locked blades at the time) solely for selfdefense over in the UK. I am in Virginia (U.S.) and I can legally carry a locking foldout knife of any size concealed, with no legal problem. If I had to use it in selfdefense, that is no problem either. Now, we do have traitors here trying to push for more restrictions of course, but we are fighting them.
Great product I have an Estwing hammer 50 years old
Patina'd like my hammer, nice! Awesome to see the longevity demonstrated.
I bought the same model off of Ebay for 28 bucks. Best money I've spent in a while. I broke the handle on my trusty scout camp ax I've used for years on the first night of a three day canoe/ hunting trip. I had no way to to get the wedge out so fashioning a new handle was out. We made due but I'll never have that problem again.
I'm glad she has served you well. She has "A LOT" of battle scars. - Marco
That exact axe was the first axe I ever bought. Got it in high school from sears. I was just using it today outside today. Love it needs sharpened though!
No wonder your handle is bent, you're a damn beast.
Yeah, I thought his handle looked bent. Mine doesn’t look like that.
Good video man,I’ve had my sportsman for about 5 years now still as good as the day I bought it,I just recently got the 26” axe and I’ve very pleased with it.you can’t go wrong with Estwing
Mine just snapped yesterday. Right where the handle goes to the hollow blue paint. But I have really tortured it for about 15 years. Now I miss it lol
Excellent review showing real world work.
I've found this in garage , can remember had it since was a kid in 80s. The shock recoil being all metal is big to joints but paracord the hole handle helps
I see one flaw on my two estwings. After about two years of good use the part between the handle and axe shaft/head bends leaving the axe head at a bit of a backward angle. I have bent my axe head back twice with no heat applied and it still works good. Why would you want to sell your trusty tool?
Looks good with a bent handle. Kinda wish mine had ten years of use on it.
You make a good video. Good tunes too. I'm getting my axe delivered today, yay!
My first hatchet as a boy scout was an estwing with the wide blade I've had it for almost 15 years now. All the hammers I've gotten have been asking still have them. Good swingie thing at estwing.
I’m sold. And such a good price only $84 at my Cabelas. Will be buying tomorrow
Just bought one of these today. Looks like I made a good decision. great video.
YOU ARE REALLY GOOD AT USING AXES
I've had mine at least that long. Like it best for gathering and stacking fire wood. The bearded hook to it makes it great for clearing brush. Works better than a pickeroon for picking up firewood too. Not as good for splitting wood though , but that not what it's designed for. I like the lightness. You can use them one handed quite easily.
Well I'm convinced Eastman AXES are one of the best
My axe has a crack in the lower tube, I'm afraid to use it now but i love the axe
Just got one on sale for 50 bucks , booyah baby
Looks like it is standing the text of time😊
Wow I've had mine for 15 years. Never had a single issue i just keep it sharp
Not the worst thing to buy at Home Depot for $40 bucks.
I got mine back in 2008 and I've been pretty rough on it, but it does not have the same cant in the haft that yours does... Yet.
Looks like I could bend that handle . Is it stronger than it actually looks
Estwing Axe Sharp BLUE
Did anybody else have one of these bend like that? Mine has a slight bend after having it for a week however I will say I probaly pushed the limit of it trying to split medium sized non seasoned cedar wood which should be split with a maul or full sized axe and I was putting my full force into it and im 220 lbs. I think I will stick to using it for smaller tasks like cutting down little trees and making kindling. It does still feel solid and I dont think it will break anytime soon even with the bend in it.
i got this cause i thought it'd be great for making kindling from seasoned hardwood, or just splitting the odd bigger piece up out on the step to get the stove cranking. i still use the old tried and true hickory handled bit for splitting, its not big either, i'd call it a "boys axe" or a "campers axe", slightly longer than the estwing overall. if i weighed the bit it might be 1.2lbs, i wrapped the end of the handle about 4 inches down with galvanized wire which adds some weight, still far easier to split stuff up with the old axe than this. after its split down a bit i can get some pretty fine kindling (fine=small) which is not what i go for. you also shouldn't be able to bend an axe from trying to split any kind of cedar, or softwood for that matter, regardless of what kinda force you swing it with. it'll be great for camping though, or yard work.
Maybe the friend who borrowed your axe used it for a crowbar.
YAY! Just got mine.😊
Just gave the son one for Christmas.
To my knowledge The handle is all steel.
I own the same axe and its not heavy enough to split heavy seasoned hardwood . As you see in the video he's splitting wood that's pungey
Sold.
I have the same one 👍🏻
i've had one for ~ 10 + years. great small axe. i call it a hudson bay type axe
Well. Guess I’m goin to Home Depot in the mornin.
Time to cancel all big tech! Including amazon
Nice...now thrill me on dry wood...
So here's a guy doing an axe video and the breaks the first rule of axmanship! NEVER chop the axe into the dirt!
Just the fact he said he had his in the bottom of a canoe was enough information to tell me how well he takes care of his tools. My dad's dad told him as a child "Take care of your tools, and your tools will take care of you" one day I'll say the same thing to my boy when he is older.
Bro its an old estwing you guys should stfu while youre ahead
yea, it doesn't appear to have been an issue.....it's a 60$ axe, and he's gotten over 10 hard looking years out of it....
His lived more life with that axe then all the tattooed beardos commenting on tool use combined.
One chop thru a piece that big = SKILL!
Actually, with hatchets it’s SUGGESTED that you kneel down lower so that if you miss, you’re striking the ground and not your legs! I agree with the secondary comments - sixty bucks and ten years of hard use/abuse and that thing is still swinging hard and sharp. I’m over it digging in the dirt...
I had a question about that axe. It looks like the drop forged steel that makes up the head and neck ends in the middle of the handle. Is the blue bit that attaches the rubber handle to the steel head made out of fiberglass, or steel?
Thanks in advance.
Steel.
Mine has just about worn off all thread blue paint.
That thang looks warped 😂
Bought mine yesterday at Cabelas for $95.00 after taxes.
They are $40 at home depot...
How did you end up paying $95 for a $30 axe?
It's not east-wing its est-wing
@donkey ass reviews and do's you've been called far word? What the hell is a far word? And why would anyone call you that. I'm just trying to help the poor guy use proper grammar and proper spelling etc. Wait did you just comment on a grammar thing and you said far word instead of far worse?lol
Thanks douche of the week for the correction
Love Estwing. What I want to know is who is the musical artist, album, and song? :)
Hey man how did you manage to bend the handle?
Why does nobody on UA-cam know how to swing an axe properly?
I cringe when i see someone dig holes while cutting wood. Good way to ruin the edge
That thing bent on you lol
Estwing not "eastwing".
Pronounced ESTwing not fucking EASTwing
I was hoping no one would notice that screw up
@@backtothewoods4731 Look mate, I'll forget about it this time.
nah, F that, its eastwing lol
Nice video, really. I didn't like the music. I triggers my epilepsy.
Music totally inappropriate. Needs more brutality,
not informative
Lasts, cuts straight thru wrist size limbs, splits big wood.
Poetry readings n circle jerks r down the road!
