I loved that I forgot that Glinda was Ariana Grande. She really is a great actress. Cynthia Erivo is pure magic, I felt absolutely honored to be alive at the same time as her 😭
😂😂😂 that is so funny, but I couldn’t agree more! Ariana’s performance was AMAZING! What an incredible actor she is! And I mean Cynthia is BEYOND WORDS! Defying gravity might be THE best song I heard in all of 2024! And her acting was sooo good!
You really come out a different person - I think every single person who's watched the movie can relate to all the characters - we've been Elphaba, Galinda, Fiyero, Boq, Nessa, Oz at some point in our lives - and living in a time where conflict is the main storyline - It's nice to see a film bring us together in all our differences.
Gregory Maquire wrote Wicked as a reimagining of The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the witches. It’s primarily an origin story. It’s beautiful and dark and sensual and epic in scope - and a far cry from the musical it inspired, which focused on the more family friendly elements of the story. Its success led to a series of books exploring what happened after the events in Wicked. They’re all great reads. Maquire has a gift for reimagining or building on classic fantasies from a different vantage point, like Cinderella (Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister), Snow White (Mirror, Mirror), and A Christmas Carol (Lost). If you enjoy fiction based on fiction, I highly recommend checking some of them out.
Part 2 is what really went down in 'The Wizard of Oz'. Without giving away to much, it's the darker half of the story. That being said, it has the most satisfying ending to a story that I have personally seen.
Im so happy you finally got to go and see this AND that you loved it. You see now why all us Wicked fans are so passionate about it. Can't wait for you to see the 2nd part in 11 months.
Awesome! So glad you finally got to see the movie and really enjoyed the overall experience! I've now seen the movie five times (and I haven't seen a movie in the theater more than twice ever) and have enjoyed it just as much each time because I caught so many little things I missed in earlier showings. That Ozdust Ballroom scene breaks me every time. I just love the simplicity of that quiet, yet emotionally powerful scene between the two of them. Then, the Defying Gravity scene. I love how they took us through that emotional moment and when she flies up the tower, spins around in the air with the cape out and broom in her other hand and starts singing, it gives me chills EVERY time. I want that visual as my computer screen saver. The second movie/part takes place a few years later and shows the consequences of each of their decisions and does intersect with the events from the Wizard of Oz. The play only has a short shadowed scene with the Wizard of Oz characters, but I'm fairly certain we're going to see a lot more of those characters and how they all play into the events of Wicked: For Good. Glad you got to see the film in a good theater and really got to enjoy all the visuals and great songs/orchestrations. The score of the film is beautiful and really plays into the overall emotional impact of the songs and film. Now that you've seen the movie and loved the cinematography, costumes, score, choreography...you should definitely check out all the great behind-the-scenes videos that the film released along the way. It really gives you a more in-depth look into how they created the sets, costumes, singing etc. I think you'll really enjoy those too, especially the "Wicked: A Passion Project", "Singing Live" and "Building the World of Wicked". I like to look at Wicked as if it were exposing The Wizard of Oz movie as a propaganda film. As if we’ve all been duped by a false narrative since the 30’s.
0:32 "You will get my raw......" omg finish the sentence finish the sentence 😂 I'm so happy you've finally been! I did a 101 point breakdown of Wicked on my channel, having been obsessed with Wicked for two decades. Part 2 is Elphaba's outlaw phase!
I have seen WICKED live 5 times (Baltimore x2, Ohio, Washington DC, and BROADWAY NYC). I've also read the Gregory McGuire books: "Wicked" and "Son of a Witch". I love wicked to my core, but i must include that honestly I loved the book "SON OF A WITCH" even more. SON OF A WITCH is a book about a scraggly greenish-tribal-looking boy who is rumored to be the son of Elphaba. It is a spectacular sequal to WICKED. There are many sequal books written by Gregory McGuire. The lore of WICKED is extraordinary.
Sooo happy you finally saw it.Your smile and your sometimes lack of words to express- and we all know how you feel. You go into the theatre one person and come out another.I was in tears so many times-- and we all needed something positive and wonderful and magical and healing and forgiving.and loving with all the craziness in the world.Your smile❤…
I thank you so much for your reactions to this musical and the music therein. There’s so much hate and prejudice in this world, in this country, and it is so hope-filling to have a reactor like you just enjoy something for the art and beauty that it is. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’m so happy and glad you enjoyed the movie, it’s become one of my favorites musicals (next to Moulin Rouge)
Part 2 (Act 2 in the play) happens in parallel with Wizard of Oz, but focuses on the Wicked characters (Elphaba, Glinda, Fiyero, Nessa, Boc, etc) . It is much darker than part 1, and I'm very excited to see what Jon Chu does with it!
I’m so glad you not only watched it but that you enjoyed it as well! It really was a magical experience. I’ve seen it a few times now and I’m still just as excited to see it again as I was for it the first time on Thanksgiving. It really made a huge impression on me, and I’ve been thinking and talking about it while listening to the soundtrack every single day since. Obviously the world building baked into the original story by Gregory Maguire is a great source of inspiration and undoubtedly provided the foundation for such an impactful movie to be build upon. But with that said, Jon Chu did indeed do a masterful job as director of this movie. And honestly, it was that kind of direction, artistic integrity, and reverence for the source material that was needed to do this adaptation film justice. He not only rose to the occasion, but he truly turned the broadway stage production into the epic, live-action spectacle it deserved to be. I couldn’t be more pleased, proud, and appreciative for the level of dedication, care and work that he put into this film. I mean in the fantastic set design, the costumes, the soaring score, the nostalgic music, the choreography, the nuanced, emotional acting, the physical comedy, and of course the vocal performances just came together brilliantly. I left the theaters with tear-soaked cheeks; I’ll just say that. I wasn’t expecting to cry like a baby when I went to see it on opening day. But then, even though I knew what was going to happen from the first time around, I somehow shed even more tears the second and third time. Go figure?
So wicked was a spin-off of the wizard of Oz written by Gregory McGuire. The book is FAR more adult oriented and has a different ending from the musical - however, it was written to be inherently political - intended to grapple with the problem of evil. When you see part two you’ll see even more of an exposition regarding that idea of there being darkness in the light and lightness in the dark. I thought the composer Stephen Schwartz did an incredible job weaving together these themes through the music and I’m so happy he had a hand in this movie as well! They said they’re writing two brand new songs for part two and I couldn’t be more excited. It’ll be great for old and new fans of wicked !
Elphaba is the name you come up with from the letters LFB. L. Frank Baum wrote the original Wizard of Oz so Gregory McGuire paid homage to him when writing this novel as the origin story of the witches. Part 2 is the 2nd half (Act 2 of play).
Awwww thanks! Hahaha they seen the original play together, so I asked if I could tag along to the movie! Was an awesome experience! They loved it as well!
@ this story is literally impossible not to love, they did such an incredible job, and put every ounce of their heart and soul into these roles. And it truly shows. I’m going to see Wicked on Broadway next April & could not be more excited. Glad you joined the wicked fam and enjoyed the experience!
I think that's a cool idea doing a listen and review of the Broadway soundtrack so you can get a feel for what's similar and what's different. Just remember that stage version is both movies combined so you'll have songs you haven't heard yet. Also, for part 2 (officially titled "Wicked: For Good") they have written 2 new songs, and there is one song missing from the Broadway OST so you'll still have 3 unheard tracks by the time the next movie comes out. For context, part/act 1 is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, and part/act 2 runs simultaneously to the Wizard of Oz but from Elphaba and Glinda's perspective, not Dorothy's.
So, act 2 of the play is only an hour longish. You never see Dorothy, only hear her crying. And I think maybe her shadow. Since the movie will be a lot longer, many speculate they'll be fleshing it out with parts of Wizard of Oz. Act 2 does take place during that, so makes sense. So, so, so much will happen and I can't wait! It comes out on streaming next week and I cannot WAIT to watch the commentary!
I was waiting!!!! Also all the sets were practical! The train the school munchkin land and emerald city. The wicked books are basically fan fiction that is now canon somewhat! The musical and movie are majority the same with book Easter eggs but the book is completely different!! Part two is the wizard of oz and wicked stories running parallel! So basically when Dorothy is in Kansas before the tornado elphaba is flying to the west and we’re gonna see how the main friends Dorothy meet on the yellow brick road became who we know them as and when she meets them. We’ll also see why nessarose is called wicked as well! I’m so excited!
OHHHHHH MY GOODNESS! Well first off thank you for sharing! THAT IS SO EXCITING! I couldn’t be more hyped to check out the 2nd part next year!!!!!!!!! What an amazing story! I just love the effort put into this film, from the actors/singers, to the set, costume, directions, everything! Truly an incredible experience!!
Yes!!!! The movie was my first time seeing it! I saw it the day before it released at an early screening and I have seen it 5 times since! I absolutely love this story to the point I had to read the book and when I tell you it’s NOT MEANT FOR KIDS! But I love the fact that this movie has so so many Easter eggs from the books the play and the wizard of oz movie and the ppl!! The guy that said the wizard will see you now is the man that wrote the music Steven Schwartz and the lady saying he must be a wizard wrote the book for the play. The guy that was singing before the big cameo was an understudy for Fieyro. Elphaba name is a play on the author of the Wizard of Oz L. Frank. Baum. This movie has so many Easter eggs I’d be typing for days 😂
WHAT!?!??????? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Wow! See after even seeing it the first time I KNEW there was gonna be HELLA EASTER EGGS! But I had NOOOOOOOO idea it was to this extent! That is UNREAL! How cool! I love when people are able to create such wild things like this!!!!!
THANK YOU! You're absolute right about the colors... it is supposed to be a "real world", not a dream by Dorothy... I don't get why the people who are bashing over it don't understand that... I'm so glad you finally watched it and liked it! I've saw it 7 times, and if the movie was still showing in my town I would go again... Wicked is a book from 1995, that was inspired by the movie Wizard of Oz from 1939 (that was inspired by a book from 1900)... So it's like an inception of histories lol The movie part 1 happens years before The Wizard Of Oz timeline (the yellow brick road wasn't built yet as you can see in the movie, where Glinda helped the Wizard choose the color)... The part 2 of this movie will happen at the same time that the history of Dorothy happened, so they will intercept at some point... and we are so exciting that Dorothy may have a bigger appearence in the movie, cause in the play she doesn't ever appears (just her voice)... I think it's a good idea for you to compare the songs from the Broadway production with the ones from the movie! And if you don't want any spoilers, don't listen to the ones from the second act... And after you watched part 2 in the next year, would be really cool for you to go watch the stage production on Broadway! The movie has so many new things that aren't on the stage... and even some characters are a little different in their interpretation... Thanks for showing my commentary at the beginning of the video... I wish you a happy new year!
That’s so interesting! And wow 7 times! But I get it so interesting! I would love to go again! VERY COOL! I am very excited to see what the 2nd part entails! And that is a good idea! I won’t spoil it for myself and listen to the 2nd act parts, but I will compare the broadway version! And yes, I might even go see the play as well! I feel like I am so invested into WICKED, I may even listen to the audiobooks!! Happy new year! And thank you for watching and commenting :)
Explanation: The original novel “The Wizard of Oz” by L Frank Baum from 1900 is public domain. That means anyone can use those characters and create a story. That is what the author of Wicked did years later. In 1995, Gregory Maguire decided to make up his own backstory for the wicked witch. He has wrote more sequels to his wicked books. Wicked has no official ties to the original Oz books. The musical is based on the Wicked book. The Wicked movie is obviously based on the musical. “The Wizard of Oz” movie is NOT public domain. That is why that studio owns the rights to the use of the Ruby Red Slippers. The slippers were silver in the books and only made red for that movie. A lot of other adaptations legally cannot use Ruby Red slippers. Wicked on Broadway had to find ways to tie that movie into their play without leaning in too heavily to avoid any legal issues (sorry for the long comment)
No need to be sorry for the long comment at all! In fact, thank you for it! Wow that’s actually super interesting! I never thought about public domain! And I didn’t know about the ruby slippers! Very cool!!! Thanks my g!
@ You’re welcome. The legal side of things is all very fascinating but the Wicked Play managed to do it. I’m excited for Wicked part 2 in 2025. I can’t wait to see how they tie all together.
I watched it 3 times, the 1st time I wasn’t too focused but I started listen to the songs and fall in so deep with ‘The Wizard And I’ and the 2nd and 3rd time was just amazing!!!! I knew all the songs at that time and sang it quietly 😂
@ 😂 the 2nd time was with my co-worker and his girlfriend and everytime we’re on the same shift I literally sing ‘The Wizard And I’ to him like every 5 minutes and sometimes he sings along too 😂😂😂
So when seeing the musical on stage you watch the first half then go to intermission and then watch the second half. So with the movies Wicked part 1 is just the first half of the story and the second Wicked movie is the second half of it. So our intermission is a year instead of 15 mins😂
Yay I got a comment screen capture. I’m so glad that you got to watch the film and enjoyed it. For context this film is the first part of the book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” which covers the events leading up to and just past the Wizard of Oz. There have been some slight changes from the original novel to make it a bit less “Adult” themed for a broader audience. If you get a chance I suggest you should either read the source novel and its subsequent 3 books which take the story even further or listen to them on audiobook. I’m guessing the second part of the film will follow the musical and end with Elphaba melting which is the opening scene of the first part. The fun part is knowing who all the characters are and what roles they will ultimately take on in the “Wizard of Oz” film, then you learn all the Easter eggs related to these roles. Ultimately this film was made by huge fans of the franchise and it shows as they pulled out all the stops to fit in as much as they can to build a “world” that many think they already know. This has to be the best film I’ve seen this year and I can not get enough of it.
Congrats on making it on the screen capture! I am so happy that I got to enjoy it! And WOW! I had NOOOO idea there was so many books! I may have to venture down that rabbit hole and really discover the story! This is such a fantastical world and story! And dope! I CANT WAIT TO SEE THE SECOND PART 😂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Thank you for sharing this knowledge with me!
Yes, the musical/movie Wicked is based on a book (series) by Gregory McGuire. I personally enjoyed the books, but they are not as clean and nice as the musical/movie.
I enjoyed your review because it was obvious that you were unexpectedly transformed! As you should be! It’s not just a musical, it has a meaning which we are living today! Government claiming that immigrant’s are the root to all our problems. Soon, when you purchase avocado for $15 or a head of lettuce for $20 you’ll understand they were lying to you! This count only has people from somewhere else! Even the American Indians came here 15,000 years ago! This story comes from 4 books written after 1995. The author used the wizard of oz and combined the stories! He did a great job! But it’s complicated! Enjoy it, I’ve seen it 4 times myself!😊
Finally! The book ‘Wicked’ was written in the ‘90’s I think and the stage show developed from the book. Wicked is not linked to The Wizard Of Oz in terms of the writers. Wicked Part 2 is Act 2 of the stage show. We’re now having a year long intermission. If you saw the show, you’d have a 30 minute intermission to get a drink and use the toilet. 😂
Ohhhhh!!!!!! Very cool! Thank you for sharing this knowledge!!! And HOW DOPE! They turned a 2 act play into two movies! But DAMNNNNNNN I cannot wait for the 2nd part!!!!!!!
Part 2 out November 2025 Yes it is partially about the 39 movie plot but more so about the characters journey. Yes there will be mentions of some from that film because, the musical is tie in and a bit not as well if that makes sense. I have seen the movie 6 times, loved every moment rewatching and btw we are getting deleted scenes too! whoooo. I have seen Wicked twice (when it came out and 2 years ago when traveling to NY) Have been more so obsessed because of the deluxe edition CD specifically german cast with the lovely Willmejin Verkaik besides the original and few others. IF you want to check out more wicked stuff maybe-check out Willmejin? She has played Elphaba in German, Dutch (She's from The Netherlands), as well as in English.
I’m disappointed. I was gonna try and see the film between Thursday and Friday, but I got super ill on Tuesday and I’m still recovering. I’ll try and see it by the first week of January.
So glad you enjoyed it. May I ask how it was seeing the movie with the women in your life? Also (forgive me if I'm wrong), how was it watching the first black Elphaba? Did you get goosebumps when she started to fly with the music behind her?
This is my understanding of the relationshiop of the book Wicked to both the book The Wizard of Oz and its 1939 adaptation. The L. Frank Baum books introduce us to The Wizard of Oz. The 1939 MGM movie adaptation introduce us to the technicolor atmosphere of The Wizard of Oz including The Ruby Slippers (which were silver in the original book) and the greenness of the skin of The Wicked Witch of the West. When Dorothy lands in Oz and meets Glinda the Good and The Wicked Witch of the West, it is clear that the two witches know each other and have a history. But that history is not explored in The Wizard of Oz. Gregory Maguire's book Wicked Imagines what that relationship might have been and how it might have begun. Someone else could imagine it differently.
The Wicked books are a spin off take on the original books. Wicked the musical takes the Wizard of Oz movie and Wicked book and does their own hybrid version of the Wicked book story. Part 2 (Act 2) of the musical takes place more concurrently to the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy but still focuses on our main characters during that time. (This movie started with the melting of the witch and then flash backed to their backstory - so we are still catching up to that moment through part 2)
Yes, by the end my eyes were watering. And honestly, I can’t stop thinking about the movie, I can understand why people have seen it multiple times! I want to see it again
@@JusJrdn like you said there is so much going on the whole time and I caught things the second time that i didn’t the first so i would definitely see it again too! That last scene/song had me tearing up it was so powerful! The acting was so good but the songs were incredible! Was the story what you expected after you listened to the songs ?
Honestly, I didn’t really understand the main story going into it, just that the two witches were friends pretty much. I had NO IDEA it was going to be so fantastical, and after watching it I REALLY fell in love with the songs. And to see the songs “come to life” in those beautiful scenes was something AMAZING! The music and the footage were PERFECT! Especially for the closing song wow wow wow
For context (since you asked haha), here’s the timeline of Wicked/Wizard of Oz
1900: “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum children’s books come out
1939: “The Wizard of Oz” movie with Judy Garland comes out (one of the first ever to use technicolor)
1995: “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire comes out (a novel that is the basis of “Wicked” that acts as a prequel to the witches of Oz) *definitely meant for adults and depicts very intense themes
2000 (ish): A (more family friendly) film adaptation of Maguire’s book began
2003: Winnie Holzman (writer) and Stephen Schwartz (composer) write the adaption for a stage musical.
2003-present: “Wicked” remains as one of the highest grossing musicals in the world
2024: Jon M. Chu (after other directors and like a decade of anticipation for a film adaption) directs the movie and here we are !!
I hope this helps haha and let me know if anything is wrong!!

And that n you very much 😊

They said they’re writing two brand new songs for part two and I couldn’t be more excited. It’ll be great for old and new fans of wicked !
Love your genuine reaction ❤❤❤
Elphaba is the name you come up with from the letters LFB. L. Frank Baum wrote the original Wizard of Oz so Gregory McGuire paid homage to him when writing this novel as the origin story of the witches. Part 2 is the 2nd half (Act 2 of play).
I love that you went to see it with your mom & sis. So wholesome 🥹
@@ashleyhoney9074 I have a friend who hated Wicked. But then she took me to see Hamilton and I hated it so much that I left at intermission 😂
So awesome that you enjoyed it. The movie is getting a lot of recognition from awards.
Wow! See after even seeing it the first time I KNEW there was gonna be HELLA EASTER EGGS! But I had NOOOOOOOO idea it was to this extent! That is UNREAL! How cool! I love when people are able to create such wild things like this!!!!!
@@JusJrdn same!!!! Now we have our one year intermission 🤣😩! But I can’t wait to hear your comparison to the original cast!
Eeeek I'm so excited!
Hahahahahah thank you!!
So it's like an inception of histories lol
The movie part 1 happens years before The Wizard Of Oz timeline (the yellow brick road wasn't built yet as you can see in the movie, where Glinda helped the Wizard choose the color)...
Part 2 has soooo much more than the wizard. You’ll be so impressed!
Explanation:
The original novel “The Wizard of Oz” by L Frank Baum from 1900 is public domain.
Wicked on Broadway had to find ways to tie that movie into their play without leaning in too heavily to avoid any legal issues
(sorry for the long comment)
😂😂😂😂 YESSSSS 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Now that’s a vibe!!!!! The songs are SOOOOOOOOO GOOD! I can’t stop singing them to myself
@ 😂 the 2nd time was with my co-worker and his girlfriend and everytime we’re on the same shift I literally sing ‘The Wizard And I’ to him like every 5 minutes and sometimes he sings along too 😂😂😂
YESSSSS 😂😂😂😂😂 hahahahah that’s so funny what a vibe
You need to see the stage production when you get a chance. Where the whole thing started 20 + years ago
So when seeing the musical on stage you watch the first half then go to intermission and then watch the second half. So with the movies Wicked part 1 is just the first half of the story and the second Wicked movie is the second half of it. So our intermission is a year instead of 15 mins😂
Welcome to the wonderful world of musical theatre! I hope you'll dig into some other shows, next I would try Hamilton!
So glad u got to see it. Knew ud enjoy 🥰
What did your sister and mom think about it since they’ve both seen the stage show?
And dope! I CANT WAIT TO SEE THE SECOND PART 😂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for sharing this knowledge with me!
Yes, the musical/movie Wicked is based on a book (series) by Gregory McGuire. I personally enjoyed the books, but they are not as clean and nice as the musical/movie.
Ohhhhhh that is VERY INTERESTING! So you would recommend them!?
@ Great watching your reactions. Hello from London. 👍🏼
Thank you!
And hello! Damnnnn from all the way across the pond!
@@JusJrdn indeed. Wicked has been HUGE here in the UK. And of course, Cynthia is British. 🇬🇧
OHHHH NO WAY! I actually didn’t know she was!!!!!!
The books are so great!! A must-read for the real ones!
So happy you finally saw this masterpiece!
Hahaha thank you thank you!
What a masterpiece indeed! I wanna see it again!
I highly recommend some of the making of shorts on the Wicked Movie channel, particularly the live singing and the dancing through life breakdown.
Part 2 out November 2025
Yes it is partially about the 39 movie plot but more so about the characters journey.
Yes there will be mentions of some from that film because, the musical is tie in and a bit not as well if that makes sense.
I have seen the movie 6 times, loved every moment rewatching and btw we are getting deleted scenes too! whoooo.
I have seen Wicked twice (when it came out and 2 years ago when traveling to NY)
Have been more so obsessed because of the deluxe edition CD specifically german cast with the lovely Willmejin Verkaik besides the original and few others.
IF you want to check out more wicked stuff maybe-check out Willmejin?
She has played Elphaba in German, Dutch (She's from The Netherlands), as well as in English.
I'm so glad you appreciated PART I (2024), Jordan. I hope you'll love PART II (2025), as well... and that no one spoils it for you. 🌈
Part 2 aka wicked for good is the 2nd act of the stage show
I’m disappointed. I was gonna try and see the film between Thursday and Friday, but I got super ill on Tuesday and I’m still recovering. I’ll try and see it by the first week of January.
Oh no!!!!! Sending you the most HEALING VIBES! You gotta let me know when you see it! It’s amazing!!!
Glad Yiu Enjoyed It!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😊😊😊😊😊😊👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💯💯💯💯💯💯
If you listen to act 2, you should react to them in order!!!!!!
Part 2 is going to be a sob fest!!!! 😭
Their is a lovely lady here on UA-cam who reviews the whole Wicked book. I'll try to find it, really broke it all down.
Oh no way!!!!
That’s dope, maybe I should REACT to it!
Or maybe I should read the book 🤔
Ahhhhhhh!!!! Finally
😂😂😂 I’m here to give the people what they need!
The real question is did it make you cry 😅
Yayyy
Hahahahaha I did it! And it was amazing!
You know that was just the first half, right?
Why were you grinning so hard even before the movie? 😊
Weeeee
😂😂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I have been waiting for this!!!! 😊😊😊
Ehhhhh 🫡 I’m here to give the people what they want hahahahah
What an experience that movie was!
