My father grew up in Leytonstone and I spent time there myself when I was younger. He is sadly very ill now and being cared for down here in Hastings , so I'm watching these videos to feel closer to him. Strange how a place changes physically but somehow feels the same.
Agree, despite the gentrification the High Road looks just as run-down as ever but John can find beauty and interest in the most everyday things. There was also a bowling alley along the High Road and I remember it being visited by pop stars Joe Brown and Marty Wilde for a film they were doing. We kids queued to get their autographs and I still have them to this day....

Marvellous, evocative video ! I grew up in Leytonstone in the 50's, 60's and early 70's. I know the places in the video so well from that time. I used to visit Bearmans virtually every Saturday in the 1960's. With my pocket money I would often make some small purchase. Often, just to window shop. It was a magical store. It seemed so glamorous and sold everything. Had a lovely restaurant downstairs. A good record and music department, wonderful toy department too. Dad bought our first record player there. I acquired many of my Dinky and Corgi models there. I remember also being taken to see Santa there as a young child. Bearmans always made a big effort with their Christmas displays and Santa's ceremonial arrival at the store was often recorded in the local papers. They also had a wonderful little rocket ship ride, that for a penny or whatever, would rock you gently up and down while you fantasized about being a space pilot. Incidentally, in my time, that cinema was called the "Rialto". My mates and I saw all the latest westerns and war films there. If we liked the film we'd duck our heads down below the seat and sit through it again. The entrance to the Rialto was unusual in that it was set a long way back from the street, and you reached it via a covered arcade which was sandwiched between StJohns church and Bearmans showroom, which could be viewed through a long line of plate glass windows. Thanks for your film, which has stirred so many happy memories. You do a timeless service to the community with these films.

John, love your films and especially this one as our family lived in Leytonstone from 1930's to 1980 and i was brought up all around Cann Hall and Leytonstone High Rd and remember the old shops, schools etc. Please keep making your great walks. Thanks.

Thanks John. Lifted the spirits during these difficult times. I worked around Leyton and Leytonstone as a GPO/ PO maintenance engineer in the 70's and 80's.. Happy days . We didn't always appreciate the freedom we had just to be able to go out for a simple walk wherever we wanted. Food for thought. Keep well.

Thanks so much for these videos. My daughter and I had our trip all set for late May/early June and now, of course, will have to re-plan for a future trip. I lived in Wanstead just around the corner from Leytonstone from 1981 until 1996. So I know Lertonstone very well and used to walk through Bush Woods every day to get to Leytonstone station. It's fascinating to look at the area now. I definitely remember Bearmans. Thank you.

Very appropriate you did this walk on April 17th - it was my mum's birthday and she was born in Leytonstone. And it's funny that as soon as you mentioned Bearman's I remembered visiting Santa in his grotto in the early 1950's and immediately after you said that people came from far and wide at Christmas for that very reason! We only had to come from Walthamstow. We're doing fine here in Berlin - not as strict as in other parts of Germany - and already from tomorrow they're easing certain restrictions. One of the buildings near the railway bridge was the site of the Leytonstone Bowl - used to go there in the late 60's

4:49 behind the bridge and to the right - Melford Road, where I lived in a year 2000-2001. Leytonsone High Road Station is very nearby . I remember singing karaoke with my mate in Red Lion. Hi John I stumbled across this video and it brought back lots of memories. I was born in 1964 and lived in Cann Hall Rd Leytonstone until we moved in 1983. I remember going to Bearmans ( The Harrods of East London ) with my Mum , the cinema I remember well and later on playing snooker in the snooker hall . Will catch up with your videos hoping to catch some of my other old haunts.

I spent years of my young life walking up and down Leytonstone High road , I will just mention a few things so as not to bore you to much !!
I knew the pub Lincoln’s as the Elms it had lots of wood features in there, hence the name ! It was the place to be when it first opened with that name , but I can’t remember what it was called before. Opposite was the Leytonstone bowling alley, the building next to Leytonstone train station (right hand side as you look at it ) was a car showroom , there was a car spares shop that was known all over london , because it was open on Sundays and late at night on the corner with Vernon road , it had a petrol pump on the pavement outside the shop, the cinema down the side of Bearmans was called the Rialto , i used to go to Saturday morning pictures there , to see Zorro , and Flash Gordon , and Tom and Jerry , we had to sing before the film , one of the songs was “ we are the Rialto grenadiers “ it was mayhem in there , the lights would come on the manager would stand at the front , and threaten us , if we didn’t behave he wouldn’t show anymore films , we just booed him , sorry about saying I won’t bore you , but most of the shops I don’t know , there were iconic shops when I was a boy , so I’m just going to list a few McNeils sports shop , run by mr McNeil , really nice old man , and for some reason we showed him unusual respect , sold more than just sports gear , magic tricks and unusual
Mum used to go to Bearmans in the 1930s. They had an exotic pet department and the first escalators outside cenrtal London.

Great memories a treat was to get ginger cake from Percy Ingles, was the sports shop you mentioned the one on Harrow Green ? As that is the one I went to. Schools for me were Cann Hall , Lakehouse and Tom Hood

The car spares shop was called `Leytonstone Motors` my dad used it all the time when we lived in Harrington Road back in the 60s/70s

My wife and I walked around Wantstead Park based on your video that we watched yesterday. Lovely day and beautiful walk. A few too many people not properly observing social distancing. We lived just off Homerton High Street when I was a child but my dad took me several times to see the genuine Father Christmas at Bearmans Department store. Still can't believe it has gone. Hi, cheers for the video, good to see. I grew up in Dyers hall road, the bit that is now under the link road. Funny thing is my mum was moved into our house in the early 60s and told then it was only temporary as the link road was coming! We moved out in 1982! Moved to the other side of the high road. All us kids went to George Tom, three of us sang in the choir at St Johns and two of us worked on the fruit and veg stall outside the red lion. The Lincoln pub had been the Elms. And yes I remember the football ground and Bearmans! Spent a few years delivering newspapers every morning on routes all around Leytonstone from the news hut that was outside the tube station.

I remember the massive guitar shop (Freedmans ?), I think - where Hills newsagents is, and another smaller guitar shop, further down on the way to Stratford. And that pub 'The Laurel & Hardy' ........
Freedman's was on the next corner heading towards the Thatched House. I did a paper round out of that newsagents back in the dark ages

What a great video, thank you John! I was born in Leytonstone in 1978 and lived on Michael Road next to Hills garage for a little bit and then moved to Hollydown way Cathall estate until I moved in 1997. I live in Halifax West Yorkshire now, it's been fantastic seeing the place again. Many great memories on nights out in Lincolns (big hand mo's) as a knew it and the snooker rooms upstairs in the Red Lion in the mid 90s. This video has brought those flooding back. My Dad used to sell dress fabrics to Bearmans in the 50,s and 60,s.He would have been sad to see the building gone. Thank you for all your walks. Just love them. Maybe you could visit the river Ver as I used to live in St Albans. Thank you and stay safe.

Have you ever thought "stop the world, I want to get off" or "if only time would stop for a while"? For some of us who can work from home lockdown is a great relief from the stress of everyday life, no expectations of being somewhere on time, no traffic noise (for the most part), no social expectations. I've started growing veg and have plans to brew my own beer, I've even dusted off my guitar for the first time in 15 years. When this paradise ends I might go be a hermit. 😁

I am able to work from home, just, and I hate it. I never thought I would miss the commute into Waterloo, but I do. I don't want work in my home. It's my home, my sanctuary, and I don't want it polluted with work. I also want to move, to travel, to explore, to get back on walks, go to galleries etc. Thank goodness for John's film making and his amazing back catalogue on UA-cam.
I'm studying for a PhD in punching walls.

Fascinating walk, John. For a brief period in 2004 I lived in Aylmer House on Aylmer Road, just behind those Georgian Buildings. (There's a glimpse of the building at 16:16) . I had just come from Cape Town, on a working holidaymaker visa, and was pretty much skint - I bought my first few shirts, ties and cufflinks at that Matalan, ready to go job hunting.😁 I ended up working for English Heritage for a couple of years - so naturally I'm really enjoying your channel very much. Excellent content!

Ah yes. The Red Lion. I have spent several Saturday nights in that upstairs hall having my hearing damaged listening to rock bands in the early 1970's, we were that close to the stage (which was right at the top of the stairs).
Also the reggae nights.
Excellent video John, I grew up in Leytonstone from 1960 through to 1990 and shopped in Bearman’s and also used the cinema next door, I seem to recall it was called the ABC Rialto ? I lived near the Thatched House pub now sadly a Bet Fred ! Probably worth doing a feature on all the old pubs and what they have become.
Sad to hear the Thatched House is no longer , would be interested in the fate of the Colgrave Arms as I lived opposite it in Cann Hall Road

The Cinema next to Bearmans was the Rialto
Dont forget that there were two Bearmans stores, one next to the other. The one nearest to the Green Man roundabout sold carpets amongst other things as was the smaller of the twoynd f
I lived at 698a High Rd that its mentioned towards the end of your film, opposite Bearmans.
My parents and my sister Ann livedthere as my father Denis and mother Lilian helped to run the British Legion club below the flat, and there were large dance floors and bars and a cellar with old paintings there.

Excellent - I remember Lincoln's purely as I used to get my hair cut in Mario's across the road when I was around 10-16 years old. That was 25 years ago now.
I am so lucky to have a woods by me so I have had some lovely walks and the bluebells have been beautiful.
Yes, I think that pub was known as both Lincoln's and The Lincoln at different times, and also had a few years in the 90s as one of the Big Hand Mo's chain.

The Cinema was the Rialto in Leytonstone if it hasn't already been mentioned I used to go there quite often as a kid, you would walk down an arcade next to the Bearmans store to get to the foyer.
Saw my movie as a teenager there with my best mate Michael Adam's.the movie was carry on up the jungle.
I lived in Leyton till I got married in 1975 I now live I. Devon and love watching these videos, I have seen places in Leyton I never knew were there .

Glad you're enjoying these Mariana. From memory we had roast chicken with loads of veg and the kids wanted dessert so I got chocolate cake and salted caramel ice cream. I seem to remember getting some ale and crisps as well and sausages and some expensive apples which were delicious

Superb bit of footage around your manor John, enjoyed it very much. Don't know the area at all but as with all your vlogs, I feel inspired to visit one day! Interested in the music you use. Erik Satie seems to pop up frequently and his melancholic but uplifting tunes seem to fit your videos very well. (Have you visited Honfleur and the Satie Museum? Greatly enjoyed this walk in and around Leytonstone High Road, John. My memories of it are mainly of walking across Bush Wood from Wanstead Aldersbrook Road. Your ability to find beauty in lowly, run-down streets and buildings is amazing. I do remember going to Bearman's as a kid to see Father Christmas, and also saw a few films at the old cinema by the corner of Church Lane (which I dont think you mentioned). Keep up the good work - more needed now than ever in these lockdown times.

Bearmans. Ah Bearmans. I remember it so well. I remember being fascinated by it as a kid, seeing the toy department with its big boxes of big toys stacked to the ceiling.
The red Lion WAS a masonic lodge at least during WW1 when this fact was advertised in the local paper. A badge on the wall above the windows seen from Harvey road depicts a compass and a triangle which has masonic overtones. Also before the recent renovation I think I remember seeing a sign to that effect on the High Road side of the building.
During WW1 the pub housed a shooting gallery to capitalize on the explosion of gun clubs during the period. The pub also hosted the yearly dinner for the Essex Volunteer Regiment who were 'part-time' soldiers who had been rejected for full military service. They wore special emblems to prevent them getting white feathers from the public and they paraded after work in Davies Lane school. The Boys Naval Brigade trained at the pub before moving to a new purpose built site on Scarborough Rd which was opened by Lady Jellicoe.

Enjoying your videos during the lockdown. I especially like the walks you do in Epping Forest and around Waltham Abbey. I spent my teenage years living in Waltham Cross and used to love visiting those areas.

Lovely walk John. Leytonstone is so vibrant but I would include stones min mart, amazing selection of beers, and pandas Chinese restaurant, superb home cooked Chinese food. Love the red lion, apparently led zep played there once, who knows. Interesting about the pop up cinema, I will join that. Thanks again John, maybe see you in the red lion after the lock down.

Hello John.im a 52 year old Scouser.me and my mates lived in kings road when the compulsory purchase orders were on the houses for the new bypass. We loved leytonstone. Drank in the heathcote mainly and the red lion.then we moved to Vernon road.oposite school.in the late eighties. the guardian angels came to London.they were based in Leytonstone and used to train above the red lion in the big room you mentioned. I've got some great memories of leytonstone. Thank you.

John. Just found this. I was brought up in neighbouring Leyton in the 60s. I watched Leytonstone AFC play Sutton Utd in the 60s. Friend's dad - Mr Fisher - was a linesman (I think it was a cup match). And I remember the model railway shop - and of course Bearmans - Russell & Bromley too (very upmarket). Roxy Music at the Red Lion? 7th July 1972 before they were famous. All my school friends went. I couldn't be bothered. How I regret that!

I used to watch Leytonstone FC, so it was good to see the site again. I also frequented the cinema next to Bearmans, which i think you approached down an alley next to the store.

Great video. Just on a bit of trip down memory lane, I used to live in Leytonstone as a kid until 79 on the Cathall Rd estate - now long gone, I can remember the High Rd and Bearmans. Bearmans was always such a magical place! I can't believe how much has changed now it's barely recognisable

I lived in Leytonstone (and later Leyton) for about 4 years from about 1986 to 1990, after moving down from "oop North" (where I returned in 1991)
I must admit I hardly recognise it now. I lived on Chadwick Rd E11, I thought I was lucky because there was some green space at the top of the road. I used to walk down Lea Bridge Road every day to the to be station to travel to work. Coming out of the tube station the other side,
I remember the library, and the Co-op, I used to go to a pizza shop called Pepe's pizza down Leytonstone High Road. Sometimes did my shopping at the Sainsbury's there. Also remember going to the Green Man on the roundabout.

I was interested in this as I was born and bread in Leytonstone and went to Tom Hood school. I left in 1967 so it's all changed. I believe Bobby Moore went to Tom Hood too.

Wow, this was nostalgic. I lived in Leytonstone in the early 70s and remember Bearman's store well. By then the its glory days were long gone though the staff still tried, amidst the frayed carpets and inactive lifts, to give the impression you were in Harrods, albeit on an off day. Between the store and the church was an equally clapped out cinema where in the winter you could get in half price as the heating system "was undergoing repairs" - it had packed up sometime in the 60s. The Crown pub was one of the few that still served real ale via a hand pump at that time so when the 3 day week and power cuts struck it carried on thanks to candles, acoustic guitars and its enthusiastic pianist. Then, a bit further up you encountered the bit of rus in urbe with the North Star? - magical. I do miss Leytonstone; its great mix of people, its environs and now being a bit immobile in my dotage I really appreciate these videos.
Brings back some memories for me, used to live there in the 80's and so much has changed since they put the road in..
I lived at 20 Dyers Hall road, so this brought back some memories. Sad days when the demolition crews slowly moved in.

Yes, as a kid I saw santa at Bearman's :-) On mentioning the Gurneys, we have some descendants here in Norfolk of the banking clan. If you check out Northrepps (International) Aerodrome, you'll find one of them running it. A great story all on it's own and worth a visit if your travels ever find you in the area. Thanks for the weekly dose of sanity John.
Thanks for the tip about Northrepps, I think the Gurneys were based in Norfolk, or that's what I gleaned from reading about their connections to the Buxtons through marriage

There were two very good music shops in Leytonstone High Road, Holiday Music, and Freedmans near the railway bridge. I remember the model shop too, they used to also sell air guns.

I was the barman in The Red Lion for a couple of years in the early eighties. Legendry times with a largely all Glaswegian staff.

Hello John. Thanks for a wonderful video. I lived in Leytonstone between 1953 and 1974. I was very excited to see the Georgian houses at the end of your video as I used to live in the flat at the top of 698A in the fifties. My grandfather and later my dad were the caretakers of the British Legion Club who I assume owned or rented the building. I remember it being a big building with a dance hall that was used by an Irish Club at weekends. I don’t recall the view of the houses you show as we entered between Dorothy Perkins and Westbournes. I assume the shops were in front. Thank you for bringing back lots of memories. Ann
I still need to explore the outer reaches of East London. I've trekked nearly everywhere else in London but areas like Leytonstone remain a mystery to me. Hopefully I'll get down there in the summer when things return back to normal.
Are your treks really just pub crawls?
I went to George Tom as well, lived on the other side of the road facing the school until i was 14. What memories! I also remember the model railway shop, me and my brother used to buy paints from there to paint our aeroplane model kits. A Sainsbury's where the snooker club is. And yes, i was just old enough to remember Bearmans Department Store. They knocked it down when i was about 7 or 8, i remember my brother used to get stamps from there. The Matalan used to be a Leo's supermaket first for a few years

Wonderful, interesting and evocative video. Hardly recognisable from our journeys to the Boleyn Ground from our home (then) in Harlow. One glaring omission was Rivetts(?) motorcycle shop - presumably long-gone?

Cont.... we used to buy stink bombs from him , and let them of at school (Cann Hall ) just along from there was the army surplus store , just a bit further along , still in the high road was Halls wood yard , a big high build with lots of massive lengths of wood , these were all near Harrow green , can remember lots more all along the high road from Maryland point to the green man , but I’ll finish now before I send you all into acoma

I remember Bearmans well - Bought Kraftwerk's Neon Lights from their record department. From recollection the cinema was accessed via a long gallery next to Bearmans. Have you looked at the area near the North Star Pub - Browning Road? It's almost possible to imagine you're in a village. Always loved that particular section of Leytonstone.

to what it is was when I was growing up as a young man it was so different , but alas time waits for no one. As for Leytonstone l remember the Red Lion well , I celebrated new year's eve 1966 going into 1967 upstairs in the function hall !! And as a young man I played in various groups late 60s till early 80s and in the 70s used to get various Drum parts from a musical shop called Freedman's I wonder when and where that went ??

Wonderful as usual. We're enjoying the lockdown, however we're both retired and our children are grown, so we're enjoying the peace and quiet and the cleaner air living under Heathrow! Love Roxy Music, or rather Brian Eno, even to this day, saw them in Leeds circa 1972 . Your face when you described the purple velvet up the stairs lol, not a glam rocker then John? 😂💕👍 Stay safe all of you xx
A small part of Leytonstone F.C. still lives on in Dagenham & Redbridge. After Leytonstone merged with Ilford F.C. to form Leytonstone/Ilford F.C. in 1979, that club then merged with Walthamstow Avenue in 1988 to form Redbridge Forest. Their merger with Dagenham F.C. in 1992 created the Daggers.
