    First off, 1972 was a great year for purses and I would have cleaned my room more than once to have one like that!! Secondly, thank you for taking time to make these really fun, interesting and informative videos! There are times that I get SO frustrated and am overwhelmed by all of the things I'm TRYING to learn, but your instruction makes each component easy to understand and apply. And the dog is great... :)

    Thank you for such a wonderful video! Using simple techniques with high-tech equipment such as cardboard, coffee cans & S's...genius. I learned the hard way about too much dye on my sponge, ruining many a works of art! You're knowledge and humor and dummy proof instruction will keep me coming back! I'll be sure to check out your store as soon as I finish typing this! Thank you!

    hello again Kevin you and your team are awesome!!! i would like to ask you one more question: after i dye the leather i use tan kote some times the super schen, do i buff the leather work in the very end after the tan kote or shell i do the buffing before the tan kote?
    thank you again and greetings from Germany

    I like to transfer images to the leather by creating the design on my computer then printing it onto a wax paper sheet taped over a normal sheet of paper (printer hates wax paper by itself) in reverse, then burnishing the back of the paper with a fat spoon after I've laid it out where it goes on the leather. Leaves the ink marking the cuts and I try to keep the lines set to 1 pt so the knife eats it. Carving after that goes pretty smoothly. Does not work on oiled leather though. :P Great video.

    Great video! Quick question for you Kevin: I'm dying a leather belt with oil based black dye. I'm wondering if it's necessary to use the same sort of finish you'd use for a alcohol based stain/dye or can I just buff out the excess dye than finish with Neatsfoot?
    Thanks!

    • @SpringfieldLeather
      @SpringfieldLeather  8 років тому +1

      Buff out the excess, then finish with a clear coat acrylic. Hope this helps!

    Kevin. I am having trouble getting an even stain on my large leather pieces. Its like parts of the leather are soaking in the stain and staying dark and will not polish out. I am left with a dark oil looking spot on my piece. Any advice?

    • @SpringfieldLeather

      Is your leather COMPLETELY dry? If it isn't that will cause problems.

    is it possible to stain ostrich leather from pink to dark brown? if so how would i do it? it is the seat to my saddle..

    • @SpringfieldLeather
      @SpringfieldLeather  9 років тому +1

      +brittany burton Well, yes but it is complicated and could come out poorly if not done correctly. Almost all leather has a finish on it and to re-dye the leather you have to remove the finish first. This is done with a deglazer (acetone). Once you have all the finish removed then you can re-dye it with a spirit based dye. then you have to re-seal the leather with coats of an acrylic finish. Two or three thin coats. Even once this is all done it may still rub out because it is a seat. This is kind of a "do at your own risk" procedure that we don't typically recommend if you're not experienced at leather work. Hope this helps!

    Dear Springfield Leather: I love what you are doing to promote leather craft. However, I am not part of the project because I am not included in the processes. I want to see what you see when you are working the leather. I do not want to see an angled camera view of the process. Make me a part of the project. Just a thought. Blessing Turbo

    My swivel knife cuts more like a razor blade. Does it mean it is too sharp? Not sharp enough? My technique? Or just not a quality knife? It came in a kit from a hobby shop.

    • @SpringfieldLeather
      @SpringfieldLeather  9 років тому +2

      khloe38 It COULD be too sharp. However, there are many factors that go into how a swivel knife will perform. You could have a narrow blade that will act more like a razor than what you were expecting from the swivel knife, if you're working with leather that is thin this could exaggerate the problem. Without seeing the knife it's hard for me to say what exactly you're dealing with. You can always email kevin@springfieldleather.com with pictures and any questions you still have!

    • @SpringfieldLeather

      A light coat is our process. But that there are others as well.
      Make sure after you oil to let it rest and soak in first.
