Art Journaling in my Composition Notebook Part 25: Am I an Artist if I can't Draw?

  • I used to have this thought that since I wasn't one of those people who could draw realistic pictures, I must not be a "real" artist. I've come to believe that that's bologna. As with every skill, it comes easier to some than others, but a skill is something that can be learned and developed. That being said, I didn't spend any effort trying to develop this skill. This is NOT a drawing tutorial. But, my message to myself (and you) is that sometimes the only way to quiet that stupid voice in our head that makes us limit ourselves is to just do that thing we think we "could never do". When I first saw a picture of a rainbow lobster, I was in a awe of it's beauty and thought, "I wish I could paint something like that." But every time the image came up, I believed it was not a possibility. Vincent Van Gogh said, "If you hear a voice within you say 'You cannot paint', then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." So this is my effort to do the thing that I "wished" I could do and throw that fear of failure out the window. Another thing that Van Gogh said was, "Painting... imposes the duty to disregard public opinion." So, while I'm an affirmation junkie, I completely understand if you have no great praises for my rendition of the rainbow lobster. Haha.
All of creation (like the rainbow lobster) declares the glory of YHWH!

The rainbow lobster is awesome! When we dare to express ourselves for others to see, we are at our bravest!

Yes, I am a recovering people pleaser. I refuse to let my fear of rejection hinder me though. Sometimes opening yourself up to potential criticism is the best way to overcome. I used to get nervous when I'd sing, until I botched a song and lived. Showing our flaws encourages other imperfect people, they aren't alone. 😄

What a stunning page. Agree with you that if we look at nature and also even the human body, there can only be one Creator, God. My apartment looks over the sea in Cape Town and every morning, the first thing I do, is look at the sea and I can see the sun coming up and the sky is such a beautiful colour, only God could creative such perfection. God bless you.
