J. Rockett Archer vs Electro-Harmonix Soul Food - Klone Comparison

- This demo compares two popular clones (Klones) of the Klon Centaur, the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food and the J. Rockett Archer. I already talked some about the Soul Food when I compared it to the Tube Screamer (link below), and so here I spend a little time looking at the Archer. J. Rockett built the first 1,500 KTR pedals for Klon, so they are familiar with the Klon's build quality and design attributes. Rather than try to figure out which one sounds more like a Klon, however, my goal here is to evaluate the pedals on their own merits... and both of these pedals offer similar yet slightly different flavors of transparent overdrive. Compared to each other, the Soul Food is a little brighter, a little more cutting, and has more clarity. The Archer is warmer/darker, thicker, and has a little more hair/grit on the gain.
Demo Code: GEAR 404 • J. Rockett Archer vs Electro-Harmonix Soul Food - Klone Comparison
This demo was recorded with a Fender MIM Strat (w/ Texas Special pickups) and a Fender Champ II (Rivera) amp miked with a Sennheiser e906 dynamic microphone.

Always support EXH when you can. They were there when I started in the 70s, hung in there though good times and bad. Always kept their prices down and always were never afraid to experiment. And now they still keep innovating and bring back new and improved classics.
Let the price aside, I think Archer bring us some special "clarity" and seems more natural and warm. If someone asked em: 'Choose one', I would go for archer.
Soul food is a great pedal, screams and makes a nice clean boost, good strat fattener, at a good price.
Great comparison! Thanks for posting! I use the Soul Food on a weekly basis but thought about getting the Archer... I am still undecided....
Thanks! Sometimes you just have to try them both on your own set-up.
at less than half the price, I will take the Soul Food.
Interesting - liked the Soul Food better in this video.
SF definitely has a bang for the buck. Both nice pedals though.
I have both of those and a Wampler ego feeding into them. If you don’t crank either of them too high and feed them with the Wampler- it’s like butter.
I have the archer at the end of the three as it has a little more dynamic range, to my ear. So there’s my two cents worth 🤷🏼♂️. Both great pedals alone, better together- soul food feeding into the archer :) I’ve been buying pedals since the 70’s (read: I’m old) - there are many fine older overdrives, it’s just their noise floor is higher and they require a noise gate.
Have you tried comparing the JHS "Meat and 3" Soul Food with other Klon Klones?
travis goodman Hello Travis. No, I have not and it's not in the immediate queue for me to do at this point. JHS pedals has some interesting original products and mods, though, and their Soul Food mod looks interesting. Another thought - I'm pretty sure we have not seen the last of the Klones. I wouldn't be surprised to see several more companies issue one, sort of like the Tube Screamer. The Soul Food and Archer are great, but I am willing to try some more. ;-)
No kidding, man. The amount of tube screamer clones and variations is just plain stupid! @@BlueSkyGuitar2
I hear more of the amp through the Soul Food and in my opinion sounds better! Especially for over a hundred dollars less! :P
I really liked the Soul Food until I got a Klon, quite different with a tube amp.
The Archer is way louder and so is better if you need a big boost. In a band mix you probably wouldnt know the difference in tone.
I always wondered, I know a handful of guitar players but never seen someone using his pedals with batteries...
Most people use a power supply these days, but some older pedals only take batteries... and then there are guitar players who think that certain brands of batteries get you better tone than others. Crazy, I know ;-)
I always prefer batteries when possible. They seem to make the pedal come alive more than a power supply. Joe Bonamassa only runs batteries I believe in his pedal board or daisy chain. Eric Johnson I believe does the same
Some pedals react better with batteries. Usually older pedals.
I learned something. I had no clue that Rockett pedals made the first 1500 KTR's. Who make the subsequent batches? I've owned 2 silver centaurs, JHS klone, Soul Food, Rockett Archer and currently 3 KTR's (just in case they stop production). :)
tweedstrat Not sure who made the subsequent units after the first 1,500.
+chris Doesn't Bill Finnegan make the KTRs?
Bill designed the original centaur and assembled each one completely by hand. He outsourced the KTRs
chris ah okay that makes sense :)
You speak too much. Why don't you go straight to the point? It is always better to go to that way. People are here to listen to the pedal comparison. It's not that hard to understand.
Waldo Rocha Sorry Waldo, but about 14 seconds in there is a little annotation bubble that lets you skip ahead to the sound demo. I have done this on all my pedal demos for those who aren't interested in the talk.
Waldo Rocha It's also not hard to upload your own perfectly executed pedal comparison videos - so why don't you do that?
Anyway, good job on the video, BlueSkyGuitar2
Waldo Rocha You can click ahead until you find what you're looking for. I appreciate the other information he gives us. I look for all sorts of information on pedals before I decide to buy them, not just what they sound like.
Archer sounds a bit sweeter
