- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- Shannon Sharpe sits down with Dwight Howard where he details his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant and the Houston Rockets. Dwight adamantly denies Kobe calling himself soft: “Kobe and I just didn’t work out, we were at two different points in my career. When Kobe called me soft it was really my mentality at the time and he was 100% correct.”

It wasn't work Shay. It was his playfulness
Bruh. This is straight garbage. U saying all this sruff now when Kobe gone and cant rebuttal. This 100% lame on Howard part.
He already thanked Kobe for calling him soft before and said he understood what he meant
Thanks Shannon Hall of fame tight end! Dwight was a beast!
Ok hurry up because Damien Jones is annoying
I never took that comment from Kobe as Dwight was lazy. I kind of took it like he never assertive his dominance, like Shaq.
Exactly
I took at as he never got better with his offensive skills
He couldn't...he was really playing hurt.
💯
Like shaq? Wtf u talking bout
This man Dwight randomly switching up his voice in the same interview. Lol
bro how no one else realize that
Its actually hysterical Im trying to figure out his real voice baha
why is this even a thing? does he do that on purpose?
he is probably sick so his voice kicking in and out
@@steveysmith4467 ya he’s got that sick voice
Dwight's athleticism never really declined, it's the fact he never learned proper post moves and just relied on dunks.
It did bruh. He was not jumping in charlotte, houston and washington like he was in orlando
He couldn’t keep dunking at the same rate because of athletic decline
You must’ve not watched Dwight last season. Bro missed a lot of open bunnies
He lost a lot of muscle and explosiveness. He just was so elite he still above average physically
That’s gonna be Giannis in a few years
Dwight’s comment on Kobe calling him soft was spot on. If you’ve ever heard Kobe talk about the mind games he’d play. He was always looking for a mental edge.
Much respect to Dwight to admit that.
Dwight was soft that exactly what kobe meant
That’s why he did what he did to Pau in Olympics summer 2008 after they lost to Celtics in finals. Then next year they win it cause Kobe mentally helped get pau TOUGHER!
I always respected Dwight because he played threw that back injury that entire year and gave us great production. Having AD now made me respect Dwight more.
You guys in LA. I kinda feel bad for you guys. You’re forced into liking Lee-Bron and AD, even though both of them are so unlikable.
@@deezboyz4157 what..?😂
Factsss AD the real soft one compared to Dwight
@@TheFrankster2405 You don’t agree? A ton of Lakers fans are very likely compelled to pull for their team even if they went a lifetime not liking AD or LBJ.
For REAL!!! Dwight wasn't the problem with that team
It wasn’t Lazy, it was Mentality, Attitude and developing your Post game.
I’m a fan of Howard but that’s what Kobe was looking for. He didn’t like Howard laughing and joking around after Losses.
Kobe was chasing Ring #6 💍
Exactly!! This dude doesn’t get it. Great player and should have been in the top 75 but his mentality was the problem.
@@J17ER hi literally said that, what doesn’t he get? 😂
The guy literally came back from back surgery. He wasn't the same
Did you watch the video???
Kobe was after Dwight because he wanted to run the offense through him and he had no post moves. Kobe envisioned Dwight being the player he was in the 2020 bubble.
I give Dwight the benefit of the back surgery but he had a bad attitude towards the criticism and end up moving to many teams until he wake up in his second stint in LA.
Man Prime Dwight Howard was a straight up beast. It’s Wild to think he’s not on the nba top 75 list. I hope he can find a landing spot and go out on his terms
No it’s not
He never developed an offensive game .. beast on defense in his prime tho. Also.. look up who votes the 75 best .. his peers didn’t vote him in
@@DeeFR3E get dame and AD off the list
1. The media perception hurt him. Kobe calling him soft. Shaq getting defensive and blaming Dwight cause he thought a young Dwight was a threat - a lot of things media wise /narrative wise played a part into him not making it
2. I hate to say this but he kinda played himself out of that list. Like Derrick Rose. Like Vince Carter. If Rose retired in 2016 he probably makes it over Dame. But he played so kuch longer post his prime to where he got more past his prime yrs than dominant yrs. Same with Dwight. He has not been an all star since 2014. Its been a while. He might have played himself out of that list. Hung around way too long past his prime and now people remember the old Dwight.
@@DeeFR3E he had a great offensive game. Especially in the post. He just couldn't shoot.
@David...
Yep...Definitely should’ve been on there.
Dude was a 3 time dpoy,4 all def 1st team,5 all nba,8 all-star,5 time rebound leader and lead the league in blocks twice just in Orlando.
He was a no doubt HOF’er if he retired in 2012.
I'm so glad D Howard got a chance to clear things up and speak for himself. Thanks Sharpe for bringing out the best in sports and culture.
And the worst in other sectors.
I honestly feel like Kobe was trying to say he didn't see the hunger.
Exactly
Dwight Howard was too emotional back then to understand
someone (can't remember who) said that Kobe was turned off by Dwight from the first phone call they had when Dwight was asking all about Hollywood instead of talking basketball.
🎯🎯🎯
@@ajenewhite9866 I remember that I forgot the interview
@@ajenewhite9866 if you listen to Dwight you can tell he in his feelings.. he asks when did he call me soft and then proceeds to tell us about how Kobe called him soft 😭😭😂🤣...here's the thing most big guys are dumb and goofy and Dwight fits the mold what Kobe was saying is you ain't a killer on this court you soft....Kobe won a chip with gasol and bynum and he gets Dwight Howard he feeling like they should 4 peat 😭😂😂
I still remember when the media tried to say he was washed up and a bad teammate when he was in charlotte the same year when he averaged 16 points and 13 rebounds and won the award for teammate of the year and kemba walker talked about how he loved playing with him. The media is a cancer
Staying healthy and athletic is not the same as developing your skills.
And you know this better than Dwight?
@@MarcusDailyMedia well yeah because they aren’t the same thing duh 🙄
@@Rayne35 so you're quite the athlete? 😅
I'll take Dwight even at this age over both the majority of big men in the league RIGHT NOW.
@@MarcusDailyMedia so when Kobe magically showed up with an enhanced set of post moves to specifically counter his athletic decline was that not developing his skillset? You very well know what he meant. Its also why Ben Simmons is struggling so badly. Howard did not reach his potential as a center because as great as he was, teams could gameplan around his lack of post versatility. A guy like Paul Gasol was a much more reliable interior player who also played with Kobe and contributed a ton to championship teams.
Honestly, Kobe might have been talking basketball IQ, dominance and nastiness. Impact on the flow of the game!!
Ain’t no might lol ! Kobe was all basketball people blew this out of proportion
8:35 I like how he transitions from 2022 Dwight to 2008 Dwight verbal style.
Bruh!!! lol hilarious when I saw that
@@pbernard914 lmao glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that. He talks like Nick Young now, been around that dude too long.
😂😂
Hahaha so funny wtf, Im like tf is going with this niqqa voice
😂
Glad he finally got to speak his peace on his Lakers tenure instead of letting the media run with this story like they have for years.
unfortunately it was after Kobe’s passing
It’s crazy how Dwight can change his voice like he has two different personas… most of the time in this interview he is speaking with this new tone but sometimes you can hear his old voice he used during his career… it’s crazy 😅
Yeah just noticed that . Coz I wasn’t watching and just listening to it like a podcast and I was like who is third guy 😂
Dwight’s in denial
Frfr
nah he explained why kobe called him soft perfectly at the end. He wasn’t as dominating as Shaq and didn’t will his way to Ws bc he got caught up in antics
true
"Oh my bad" Shannon killed me with that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
6:18
dwight found that funny hahah cx
The voice change of Dwight from soft to deep was striking. When I started the video I was like, Dwight voice sounds a little different from when I last heard it. But then I heard the voice change to go deeper and I was like that’s the voice I remember haha
He was a little heated so his voice went high lol
He should’ve asked him about when Kobe said Dwight called him talking about the club and parties before their first season together
And how to get movie deals ect he definitely wasn’t laker ready he was in L.A for the wrong reason
Why’s Dwight Howard always playin’ dumb like he doesn’t know why Kobe called him “soft” & why he’s not a “75”? Is his Father not a Pastor? He stays lackin’ accountability in every form.
@@moseshanon7060 you know very well he easily deserves top 75 he has a case for top 60
He wants Dwight to say something bad about someone so he can say LeBron wouldn't have said that

Dwight changing his voice for no reason at all 😂😂
He's a troll, it in a good funny way🤣🤣😭😭😂😂😂😂
This is why alot of times its best to hear from the man himself and not these sports commentary
Bro I never heard Dhoward talk in real voice 😂

I just commented the same thing. Why is his voice flip flopping?
@@Basketballisgreat he’s broken
I like Dwight's personality. He treats his teammates well. Regardless of what you think about his career success, this guy's great in a basketball team.
I Love it!!!... Howard never was soft physically for sure... But Kobe wanted to take Howard to another level that's all.. And in the long run it worked... Howard realized it was the mental state the was soft at times because He worried about something you can't control and you just have to move on move forward without complaining
Kobe wanted Howard to be SHAQ!
Point blank period!!
@@sevynthdaye2863 How Do You All This Mr Point Blank Period.. Did You Cover The Lakers As Writer...oh No wait you were friends with Kobe... Wait.. Shaq.. Man cause you sound like you have ere there
I feel like mentally Dwight wasn't tough enough, same with what we can say about Ben Simmons.
exactly. when dwight came back to la the 2nd time, he was focused, sacrificed himself for the better of the team, was a great leader on/off the court and used those elements from what he learned from kb to finally get him a ring. dwight was a beast in 2020 when he got his chance to play
@@sevynthdaye2863Finally somebody that get it. And all that while he was being on Shaq for the reason that Shaq was a potential G.O.A.T. Seems like Kobe was envious and bitter
Shannon was trolling Dwight this whole interview. He's hilarious 😂
His reaction kinda displayed that “soft” skin instead of having thick skin. I believe Kobe was talking about his mentality towards basketball
Kobe was hella arrogant tho
That's exactly what Kobe meant
😂
🤣🤣🤣
How do you know what Kobe meant
"Kobe takes the call." Jalen Rose said. "I was sitting there. I might have heard some of the conversations, and I might have heard Dwight asking him about LA and, you know, some of the off-the-court things. “Kobe got off the phone and said, ‘This s-t ain’t gonna work. His head ain’t right. I’m here to help you get championships. You’re asking me about producers?’ This ain’t gonna work.’”
I was looking for this quote right here
So glad Dwight actually realized what he was saying…A LOT of guys now don’t listen to the veterans and just get sensitive. NO you wanna be good or GREAT.
😂 Shannon wild for saying he ain't have a place to stay then say my bad 😂😂
I swear Dwight Howard had a different voice back in his prime. He sounds different 😂😂😂
LMFAOOO
Dwight just own it bro 🤣
Own what?
Own what
@@DPeezy3158 he didn’t assert his dominance like he was suppose to he gave us 3 years when he got to
The lakers bro had no offense at just sitting on the block he was still a good big on the defender side but if you got somebody who can’t shoot or don’t have an offense to get a bucket that’s not running to the basket trying to dunk messing up the offense cause you in the way 🤷🏾♂️😂 ( probably a stretch but I’m high asf)
@@JOJO-nx9gd so how does a player like that who can’t win with Kobe, end up winning with Lebron? I’m confused.
@@dezz8598 that championship DOESN’T COUNT lol one day the lakers players that year will admit it
Dwight was a monster with the Magic. He just didn’t take that post game, dominance to the next level. With all that, should have still been top 75.
Kobe was saying the same thing we fans were saying about Dwight. He played around to much. It was all about his attitude
Exactly
Facts
Yup, and the thing is his personality hasn’t changed but he takes the game a lot more serious when he’s on the court. Back then tho it was very irritating seeing him act so playful.
Too many fouls.
In the podcast he explains that when it was game time he was there to have fun doing what he loves, perform at his best and put ap a show to entertain people. And when it came to training and getting better he was focused and not joking around. So according to him his attitude couldn‘t have been the problem and was always misunderstood by people.
He saying he came back and won a championship like the lakers didn’t have AD, Mcgee and lebron as centers lol
*
Literally dog averaged 6 points and 5 rebounds rounded.
Kobe said he wanted more out of Dwight, Kobe also said that when Dwight got the call to come to Lakers, Dwight called Kobe and was talking about directors and producers, and said that Dwight head was in the wrong place, Kobe told Dwight I'm here to help you win championships!
This interview from dwight shows how the media can spend any story. If the sports media pushes a narrative everyone will believe it. I love that dwight spoke out and told what was really going on.
True.
It’s one thing to have that body, another thing to use that body to it’s fullest potential
How would you know about his full potential
ANYONE is “lazy” when it comes to Kobe Bean Bryant work ethic.
He took that “soft” comment personal!! 😂😂😂
As he should have, because Dwight was not soft!! He joked around a lot and Kobe didn't like it!
4:37 mini voice Dwight - 4:49 voice change to the Cookie Monster 😂
IDwight Howard as a player man he was so dominant in Orlando!
Facts I don’t understand how AD made the top 75 but Dwight didn’t that’s laughable seriously 😂
Forget AD, what about Damian Lillard lmaooo over a guy who been winning DPOY like its nothin
AGREED.Dwight has a better resume than AD and AD can't stay kealthy.
Facts
Way to stand on yay truth Dwight💯
I can definitely see what Kobe meant! He was saying mentally Dwight was soft & he was! It was games I was like wth is Dwight doing!?
I feel you Dwight! Ppl ALWAYS sleep on you! Your game drastically changed for the better, within a short off-season!
Dwight keeps referring to himself in the third person 😂
Oh, there was definitely some "Stay D-12" billboards around LA. I'm from LA and seen them with my own eyes, lol.😅
Kobe just saw a lot of potential in Dwight and wanted nothing but the best out of him. Nothing but tough love!
Dwight thinks work ethic means that it's all about conditioning. This man did not learn a single post move or abuse his gifts even to the extent that shaq did with his, Kobe called him soft because he didn't have that hunger or drive to WIN.
Also him saying he's the last person in the gym after practice is 100% a lie ain't no one leaving after kobe lmao.
1.He and Shaq had two different body types they couldn’t play the same
2. You didn’t know Kobe don’t speak for what he meant
3. The fact that you said he didn’t have any post moves shows that you didn’t watch basketball the only post move he didn’t have was a fadeaway
man said 100% a lie like he was there in the gym with him dude shut up
I saw the whole interview, and honestly it seems like he never was at fault or he always did the right thing but he was misunderstood… Kobe clearly didn’t like his mentality
He just didn't like the fact he joked around a lot just like Shaq.
@@LL-dj3uj I think part of the problem was that shaq on the court didn’t play no games he was asserted himself as a force in the paint, Dwight was still dominant but not as assertive and Kobe probably saw that as a weakness. You know Kobe was obsessed with the game that mf was ruthless
Kobe was the most arrogant player ever
People are just hypocritical about it
I remember seeing an interview a long time ago that kobe hates seeing big guys be all nonchalant and jokey
@@jacintopereira5497 NOBODY WAS MORE ARROGANT THAN JORDAN!!!

True.
Dwight voice went thru puberty in this video 😂
I’m glad this interview happened
Laker fan here. Thank you Dwight for everything!
Lol, how his voice change like that @ 8:40!😃
haha the way his voice drops deep when he descrives how he should have been thinking in certain situatons.
I remember seeing and feeling that Dwight didn’t play with much passion to me as he did before. I never really counted him out tho, I just thought that he lost his fire a bit. Those stats are impressive tho, quiet!!! But impressive I didn’t even realize that lol!
Shannon was unprepared for this interview. i dont think he even attempted to research the talking points
“you cant be soft and win defensive player of the year 3x” - Dwight Howard
Shalom
Kobe basically said he tried to show Dwight how to be a champion but Dwight had an image in his head on what a championship team supposed to look like. He said Dwight wanted the locker room to be harmonious but that wasn't the reality and he didn't think Dwight was willing to deal with what it really was opposed to what he thought it should've been. And keep it a buck if we play on the same team and the minute I leave you say I'm soft and a teddy bear you was thinking that while we were teammates.
That's the problem he "tried" it tell us that Kobe never told him: same thing with SHAQ he never told them but expected them to know it cause he saw it in them
I'm from Cali, it was alot of billboards in LA saying Dwight Howard stay I remember this like it was yesterday
Kobe had the highest standard. Imagine Dwight with Ja Morant's mentality, he would be a beast.
Frankly i think Kobe was a jerk and now because he passed on folks are trying to give a new more noble meaning to his utterances.
Kobe is my guy, period. With that being said, DH is not soft he was just viewed as being silly, goofy. That's not the same as softness.
Dwight got that Kobe voice down pack.
Finally speaking his own peace and not letting these idiots tell his story for him! He tired of being nice and letting y’all disrespect him constantly for no reason.
🙌
The switching of the voice 🗣️ is killing me 🤣
Man that voice switch up 😂😂😂
Kobe did say that he knew it wasn't going to work off the phone conversation they had...
True because he's asking about Hollywood lol.
I agree with Dwight. Even Shaq said as much in the past if I remember correctly. Dwight is letting the refs get into his head thinking he was going 5o get those same calls the smaller guys got. And mentally he was soft on court for that reason
I never thought DW was soft probably under skilled but not soft . This dude took the Magic to the Finals and ran into no other than the Mamba himself.
People forgot Dwight was a clutch playoff performer as well
Yeah in Orlando
I really like how Dwight is comfortable with his voice now
The fact that he thinks he was killing in the post means he lacks some self awareness. As great as Dwight was he could've been so much greater offensively. Especially in a era where he was competing for best center in the League with Andrew Bynum an Amare Stoudemire
He was killing in the post tho.
I'm happy he is speaking his truth. You have to defend yourself sometimes.
Great Interview. Funny How Dwight Voice Changed Though 😂😂😂 8:32 - 8:43
😂😅
Mans said he saged the whole facility.. that's part of what Kobe talking about
People gotta stop taking the word of the more famous player as gospel, kobe got yall believing Shaq wasn't the leader of the team
D Howard is like that anime Dragon Ball Super Whis.. As soon as he gets serious, he let go of zestiness and speaks MASCULINE 😂
Dwight got a bad rep but was actually a beast when you look
Kobe said he didn’t have work ethic because when he first got there, Dwight wanted to go to a music studio and Kobe wanted to go to the gym. Kobe had some crazy standards, that’s why he was so great.
Exactly and Pau worshipped Kobe so Kobe saw him desperate to live up to his standards
watching Dwight disagree with every point Shannon was making is comical its literally all documented throughout history
Who documented it…….all it takes is one person that don’t like em and they can definitely change that. Dwight was there
@@hiitsme3039 i watched Kobe call him soft on tv and also talk down about Dwight

Seeing how Dwight looked when he was in Orlando, I'd believe that it takes work ethic to look like that
Howard does a great voice impression of Kobe 😂
Media will have fans thinking the worse of athletes
Beeen doing that since the beginning of time
Dwight was like a super Deandre Jordan
I always saw Dwight as being a hard worker in the gym but not on the court he spent most of his time lifting weights. But not nearly as much on the court practising your shot or his handles he was supremely athletic and talented but was more concerned with his body than his game
There were billboards -source me growing up in LA and seeing them. Him not seeing them isn’t the same as they’re not there
As i remember it, he did always have a problem of complaining too much to the refs while the game is still going on.
Kobe said he wasn’t serious enough, he laughed and smiled to much on the court R.I.P Kobe Ik all about Kobe on the court
Kobe thought highly of the potential that Dwight had. He knew he was supposed to be like Shaq, we all did, but he never fully got there. I respect Dwight for helping bring a title to LA but he should've been more than what he was and that's wht I think Kobe saw
Kobe and Dwight never get a championship together
Kobe shoud have said that directly instead of tryna put a mystic around him
Dwight is missed my anyone who misses old school man basketball.
