We are planning an expansion of our UA-cam channel so we are looking for people that are interested in helping out on the channel.
You don’t need to be an expert you just need to want to get involved.
We are also looking for people that have some experience in aikido/ judo or any martial art that has falls, as you will need to be able to roll !
If you are interested send us a direct message (DM) either on the UA-cam channel or facebook/twitter.
You need to either live or be able to get to London (UK) as that’s where we run our UA-cam channel from.

I worked in jails, military and federal correctional institutions for 20 years(1974/1994) as an officer and shift supervisor, and in those 20 years I had to resort to using force 49 times. People ask me how I can have such an accurate count of physical incidents, well simply put I kept a copy of every incident report I was involved in and I still have them in my file at home. I was trained in an aikido like self-defense system while employed with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. They concentrated on the techniques Ikkyo, Nikkyo Kotogashi which were trained against the attacks #1.Wrist grab, #2.Lapel garb,#3. Push/Punch and Sankyo which was used as a come along technique. Each of the first three began by initiating a step back(from a modified T stance) with a diversionary hand gesture to the attacker's face. It was really a open hand strike to the face but because of legal reasons it was taught as a diversionary hand gesture. I became proficient enough at this mini aikido system to soon become an instructor. The funny thing was it was very similar to the training I received years before in the US Marine Corps Correctional Training while stationed in Okinawa(1974/1975). I apologize for going on and on but in those 49 incidents I used ikkyo successfully 36 times. I used kotogashi once and nikkyo 6 times. I don't know why I used ikkyo more then any other technique it just seemed to come to me, I didn't train it more then any other technique. I have shodan ranks in Isshinryu karate, Judo and after my retirement I earned my shodan rank in aikijitsu. I trained the Bureau of Prisons system twice to three times a week for around 90 minutes to two hours with my fellow self defense instructor and a few other interested prison employees for 10 years. So I and my fellow employees got very proficient at those 4 techniques. In my 20 years the only injury I suffered at the hands of an unarmed inmate attacker was two scratches on my neck. I never used my judo or karate inside the walls which was weird as I trained in those the most in my off time for decades. How I defended myself against an inmate wielding a knife or razor blade weapon 6 times is a different story. Thanks for allowing me to relate my aikido experience.

@@OndrejMatejOMnutritionist I currently compete in SHIDOKAN TRIATHLON competitions and have actually been able to use Many of my old Jinenkan techniques to submit or sometimes to catch them off guard or confuse them. Bujinkan/Genbukan/Jinenkan have certain Ryuha that very closely resemble AikiJutsu hence I'd say that there are some aikido techniques that may be useful if you modify and can apply it quickly.
I guess it boils down to the whole Passive Training vs Active/Resistance based training. There are definitely benefits to many aikido techniques in my opinion

You guys have to be the most genuine examples I've seen on UA-cam to date. As aTomiki Ryu Aikido practitioner who worked the clubs in Christchurch New Zealand back in the 80's I really appreciate the practical approach you demonstrate that myself and my martial arts mates back in the day took in the real world. I don't train officially these days due to joint injuries but to see the simplistic approach is truly refreshing. Well done Gents, would love to look you up next time I'm back in the old country.

A nice clean demo! We always get questions about application in real life but it is easily demonstrated as both instructors have a practical experience. Aikido gets you out of a take down whereas an MMA grapple or formal Aikido lock to the ground leaves you vulnerable to an attackers friends. Attackers are usually with friends who can just stomp you if you go into a ground hold instead of being randori aware and on your féet ready.

At 50 years of age, I've never been in a real physical street fight. Even as a kid, when others would try to fight me, I would simply not engage them. This seemed to confuse the would-be attacker, and they would either lose interest, or back down.
As an adult, there were plenty of times another man or men wanted to fight or hurt me. However, by that time, I had served in the military and had also studied Aikido, and Krav Maga. This gave me tremendous confidence that I think others could sense when they would threaten me. Even men much bigger and stronger than me would back down when I would quietly stand my ground and not engage them. I think they knew I was quite confident I could handle myself.
I have taught police Aikido techniques and other techniques for taking down attackers without causing the attacker serious injury. I have also taught over 1000 direct care staff in mental hospitals how to prevent, avoid, disarm and restrain attacks from psychotically agitated patients. The number 1 key to success is confidence. With that comes situational awareness, and increased ability to prevent and avoid conflict in the first place. Confidence comes, as said in your video, with practice of your techniques; but also with living the philosophy of compassion.

Respect - I'm 55 years old and I have used aikido (and Wing Tsun ) maybe 5 times in a fight (the last one when when I was 46). Even though I won each fight I saw every one of them as a failure. The real self defense is in awareness and conflict management' as you say quiet confidence is a large part of it and it has often worked for me - the times it didn't was usually because I was too nervous ( and most often after an absence from training. ) While it's nice to have a story or two about when 'aikido worked on the street' it would've been nicer just to have a pint - I envy your perfect score.

Cardio and stamina would play a big part in any fight once it gets rolling and no way out, cause if you lose gas in the first half minute then you are toast. most fights last around a minute or 2 ( grabbing and swingging and wrestling, street style that is in the hopes of finishing the other off as quick as possible) with no real plan, just wild bombs and kicking with luck or carelessness on either side that something will land or hit the other person. But by then each one or both are played out and puffing to survive by then. Cardio and stamina will definitely save ones life for sure also situational awareness and the ability to just walk away from a fight if allowed, (a little bit of muscle and knowledge of fighting technique will help tremendously of course)never let your pride get in the way, pride only hurts, it never helps.

My advice is to not just talk about the follow up hand (punch or whatever), but for uke to use it everytime. If nage's technique is correct, in terms of breaking balance and getting of the line, the follow up strike will be nullified. This is a universal principle, which will improve the training of all involved.

@2:10 It is not necessary to switch the hand to the other side of the head in a clinch. Reverse the right thumb down on the neck with fingers behind the lower head and neck. With left hand and arm secure (many options to choose here) his right arm then with your right hand pull their head down bringing their ribs into your upcoming knee.
I am not criticizing this video technique, just sharing an option I know. We have been taught to use the least necessary movement getting your technique happening as soon as possible.

Whatever someone learns for self defense needs to be learned in a live setting against an opponent. Without live experience, in the heat of the moment, 99% will not react in a way that can save their life or someone else's. Sparring, real sparring is a great way to put any technique to the test. Find a gym/instructor who understands the value in real situational training. Boxing, Kick Boxing, Jujitsu , wrestling etc all provide fundamental technics that can be used defensively.

Some of those rely on being faster than your opponent (meaning more moves in the same time)... What if the other guy is faster. On other thechniques the guy would be badly of balance if there was any form of resistance. And those blocks are so wide ...

I believe Rokas is just furthering his martial art training. You can't erase what you learn but only apply it to the next. People are entitled to their opinions and decisions. I stopped pursuing karate and began Aikido and Taijutsu and i find myself applying my karate experience to both not only to make what i learn effective, but also to make it my own.

Training doesn’t make it prefect. It makes it permanent so practice properly so when your in a fight you know the right moves.

How to take someone down fast:
    - ask them to do a Pro Wrestling Clothesline instead of punching you
    - ask them to awkwardly put the wrong foot forward
    - move in and use the stiff arm leverage to trip them

Why is it when someone lunges at me, no one comes to the rescue with these Aikido maneuvers? But at the same time this brings up the real issue of what to do in a dangerous encounter. Do you try to escape or do you go for it ? And what about escalation ? What are you going to do when the assailant reaches into his coat and brandishes a knife or pistol ? What good is your Aikidoflow at that point ?

Honestly I was pleasantly surprised. The first 2 were pretty good. My only real issue is you're a bit too nice. If someone's attaching you and all you do is trip them without actually doing any damage and then run, you better pray you're a pacey bloke.
If you used elbows to just hit them at least once before the take down you stand a better chance of getting out of there.

Yeah, if your opponent is really set on hunting you for some reason, but more often than not, an attacker wants an easy target. If they see you have the skills to put them on the ground, they are likely to back off.

@@marsbase3729 the key is damage though, if all you do is put them on the ground and try are totally fine they are just gonna get up, angrier than before and attack you again. You need to inflect some form of damage if you're trying to convince an attacker to stay down

Aikido works only as a complementary martial art. First learn boxing and wrestling. Than start learning aikido, wing tsun and all the fancy martial arts.

Yes. At our school (self defense, not primarily Aikido) the instructors introduce techniques from TMA such as Aikido as advanced options or inserts only after demonstrating consistent competence with more basic, gross motor skill techniques. Occasionally they tease calling it "Aikidont". You know some Aikido instructors and schools have earned such teasing.

Refreshing to hear this sort of common sense advice advanced other than as a troll. Aikido works for me as a core art with Wing Tsun providing the pragmatic grounding- but it takes some time. The approach you advise, or the variations in the replies are possibly the best from a pure self defense pov.
