Thanks Dad
Thanks Dad.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Thanks dad
Bahahaha so true!!
Dang, David was BRUTAL on these guys and their hot glue work. I was cracking up.
LOL he was almost as harsh as Lord Voultar would have been 🤣
Imagine Voultar getting a hold of all of this hot glue mess... he'd be all like ohh.... My god. And dammit hot glue this and Jesus Christ hot glue something else
Hot glue and twisted wire connections are just one step above breadboarding. They allow you to transport your machine without immediate malfunctions!

there's certainly plenty of room left in that case and a tube amp would be ultra cool - probably would need to have active cooling for the case interior introduced though

Could have a vent in the top to see the glow of the valves, that'd be really neat.

Am I the only one who saw "Part 4" and thought there were three 8 bit guy episodes I somehow missed?
I did too 😂
Same.
This is a collaboration project between youtubers and the result will be presented in a giveway.

I was thinking the same!
2 hours here in chicago.
I have 1 day shipping
"Same day shipping" takes about 3 days for me... Ive never had one take less than 2
If you have Prime, it can be delivered the same day AFAIR. Of course in some locations, not in a middle of fking nowhere, Gobi Desert or Detroit.
Tip: Stick a magnet tot the case when drilling or Dremeling. It will prevent the metal pieces to fly around the case and cause shorts in your electronics.
The IIe backpanel is aluminum alas.
If you need to make clean holes in panel aluminum nothing beats a two-part punch die. Motorheads use these all the time, so do Test & Instrumentation guys and A/C guys and marine electricians to name a few. They are thirty to two hundred bucks and they cut clean holes in two steps faster than it took to trace that nickel with a Sharpie. There are UA-cam videos on the commoner sorts. They even come in D-sub patterns and keyed holes nearly impossible to approximate with a burr.
And magnetize your drill bit ;)

Ladies and gentleman, that hub is nicknamed "the Mac killer", as it backfeeds 5volts into the USB type B port when used with an external PSU.

I killed one xbox 360 joystick, one apple keyboard and one usb port on my iMac because of that sucker! The use of a 9V psu could have helped too... ^^

"If I have to buy 1 thing from Amazon I might as well buy everything from Amazon" . Dude, that's why all your favourite shops are closed.
Yeah I’m trying to buy less stuff from them and more from other merchants. It’s a tough habit to break.
Eh, retail is garbage. competing based on location was never really proper competition, it was inefficient, everyone working in it hated it, get rid of it. yeah amazon is fucked and monopolies are fucked, but we would have been fine with something like ebay replacing most physical stores.
I would more than rather to just walk into a store to get something than wait for days and have to pay a bunch of people extra that shouldn't get much money in the first place to have them fuck it up and throw it at my door. But also I wish the stores would just have what I needed. You always see stuff that nobody bloody buys or even wants to buy. If stores just sell shit that people need instead of stupid idiot accountants/purchasers stocking what they like we'd have more people buying in shops.

I thought you had typed "PILE" - I was gonna agree.
Says “ That sucker is NOT moving.” *rocks the sucker back and forth* *the sucker moves*
it's moving up and down a little, but not side to side
HAHAHAHAHAHA
The only thing that moves is the whole plate it is mounted to, ergo it isn't going anywhere.
When connecting L and R to a single speaker I would put a small resistor between them.
how come?
Resistance is futile.
Built-in analog audio on RPi isn't great, since Pi doesn't have proper DAC.
That's probably why USB audio device was connected.
Considering that the original Apple II had a speaker connected to an address decoder (so it would click whenever this memory location was addressed, to produce 1 but digital audio), the Raspberry Pi's built-in PWM audio is, paradoxically, probably too good for an accurate emulation. It is much more straightforward to the 1 bit audio with a proper DAC.
😁 Totally reminds me of every project me and my grandpa did together. I would come up with some idea and jerry-rig everything, hot gluing shit all over the place, just making a total mess of stuff (I'm definitely not saying that your guys' work was that bad, I was just giving an example of my work), and my erstwhile grandfather would stay up half the night cleaning up my mess and generally making everything look neat and orderly. While I had the dream, it was my grandpa that brought it to life. Thanks granddad.

I love how you basically cleaned up the mess and even retrobrote it for the aesthetic
last time i went to solder some leads, i was having a tough time - thx for reminding me that you should 'tin the leads first' - great episode. i like how you up'd the bar on the hotglue mess, and really showed in so many small ways how a project can be improved.
I realize this was meant to be used as an Apple IIe emulator primarily, but since the case is so huge, there's a lot of really cool functionality that could be added to it. Things I'd personally add:
1. Put an ethernet port on the back of the case in one of those empty holes (the one feature from the first video that no one carried on). I know wifi is easy, but it's nice to have options.
2. Since there's so much room in there, I'd add some USB controller adapters with the ports on the back (using more of those vacant slots). That way you could use official Genesis/Megadrive controllers on those games, SNES controllers on SNES, NES on NES, PS1 on PS1, N64 on N64, etc.
3. I'd use an SD Card extension port so the SD card is accessible from the outside of the case (or mount the Pi itself in a spot that'd make it accessible).
4. I think I'd also possibly relocate the Pi's LEDs to be visible from the front/keyboard area (Most likely re-wire the keyboard's LED to function as the Pi's power LED, and then relocate the SD card LED right next to it).
5. Install an RGB/Component-out hat onto the Pi and make those accessible in the back as well. That way you could play your games in beautiful RGB on RGB CRT monitors/TVs/PVMs/BVMs. Best possible signal for those old monitors.
6. Add a hard drive with even more games. You could put every game for every system the Pi can run at proper speeds on there that way.
There's probably other stuff I haven't thought of yet. I think I might have to build something like this myself. I've seen videos like these in the past, but this one has really got my juices flowing. I mean, there's a chance I'll win this system (a very small chance, judging by the amount of entries so far), but man, yeah. Hrm. Actually, for more power and more systems, it might just be better to forget the Pi and put an actual PC motherboard in there. It would also then be able to use RetroArch's Run-Ahead feature to basically remove input lag you normally get with emulators. Yeah. I don't really have the money to do all this at the moment. But, yes. Something like this needs to exist in my life. :D
Nice essay
One could seriously go all out feature creep.
I would route the audio to the back and have an option for stereo audio thru 2 RCA jacks or mono thru a 3.5mm jack. I would also have a switch so you could switch between stereo, mono,or internal
Thanks for finishing this project in your inimitable way! Very nice work sir! And sorry for the hot glue and single screw situation. Glad you fixed that. :)

Neat! I’d say you beefed it up quite a lot in terms of appearance and solid mounting. 💪🏼👍🏼😎
That actually was pretty cool. I was the cool guy on the block in the day. While residing in my dorm back in the mid 80s, I had an Apple II+ with WP software and a printer. People used to PAY ME to type THEIR OWN papers into my WP, and save it to disk and print. I drank for free for two years. :)
Funny thing, before computers were everywhere and everyone (kind of) knew how to use them, you could genuinely make a business out of word processing. My mother ran such a business out of our house the entire time I was growing up. She also did medical transcription - taking a doctor's audio recorded notes and putting them in text format.
She only ended up closing shop in 2004, and that was mainly because we moved away from all her clients.

i see some people disagreeing with how he had a "heres how its done" attitude, but i cant blame him. why was hot glue used in the first place? why was the stuff seemingly placed at random? as far as i see, 8bitguy is the only person who actually decided to put effort into this..
I assume they went with a temporary mount with hot glue so it could be moved as other UA-camrs added their mods and sigs to the case.
He also has the attitude to end the project, like it can't be improved anymore.
Okurka That's fair...he did mention that their were a few additional things he might have wanted to do, and that you could keep modding and improving it indefinitely. Watching the Mindflare Retro's video they had a pretty fun back and forth so I hope that playful attitude means that everyone got along nicely on this project.
Hot gluing a power supply is just dumb.
Those ppl need to get over themselves. There is no excuse for shoddy work. He has a here's how it's done attitude, and he's right too! This is in fact how it's done! Can't blame him for it when he is actually right!

We have shuttl here in the UK too that offers 60 minute delivery times from local shops, they basically go in, collect your order and drive it to you.
Two Day shipping for me in Maine usually takes 4 days.
Finishes the project with style.
Anybody critical of you being disrespectful of the others' work needs to pay attention: You left all of their additions intact (apart from the disconnected parallel port) and only modified the setup to be more stable and durable. We should all have as much patience and tolerance for bodges in a long-term product as you had because when you know a project is being finished and given as a prize, you ought to have your best presentation -- and this really is just about the best you could achieve for the work done here.
The series was great and really goes to show how even a shell of an old computer can still be made relevant for modern use, and I think all of you made great additions to the project -- and that you, 8-Bit Guy, did a great job of closing up the project and bringing a professional feel to final product.
2:33 Somewhere out there is the 9Bit Guy, depressed and dealing with rejection.
Sad
I gotta admit, I kinda freaked out when you put that tap in your cordless drill. Experience has taught me on more than one occasion to only ever use a hand crank chuck and cutting oil on tap bits. Also, I applaud you decision to solder splice and heat shrink the audio wires along with the sticky back mounts for zip-tying wires!
In the end it looks like a very clean and professional addition to the project! Bravo!
As far as soldering the wires. PLEASE learn how to do a linesmen's splice! There is nearly 0 chance of the wire poking through the shrink, you get a better mechanical linkage, and you also don't have to hold it while you solder.
even better he should've just soldered directly to the speaker.
@Hand Solo I bounce back and forth on pretwisting. I have overall abandoned it, as it seems to make it much harder to get the solder all the way through the connection, as the spacing gets much tighter between the individual strands, and it doesn't seem to... Intertwine, as well.
@@rubusroo68 I will give him a pass on that, as there are a variety of possible reasons why he didn't. Namely being soldering to those tabs can be very tough to do. But... He really needs to learn a better, cleaner way to join 2 wires...
@Hand Solo yup. Have seen this before, but I also frequently has to work with old nasty wire, so didn't notice a trend. I often was scraping the wires to get the built up crap off.
These wires were in factories for 10-25 years, and I was trying to fix the thing they connected.
Aww man. David you are a real mercenary - you shat all over them for the glue and the failure to solder the wiring :D That's priceless. A little good natured poke in the ribs never hurt anyone.
A smile that can cut you to pieces :) They won't do that again!! Lol. David is a genius.
Why is this the only guy who knows how to do stuff correctly? By the way pealing off hot glue is always satisfying.
When I was a kid I was going to peel some satisfying hot glue off of a workbench, but it was still hot and I burned my finger.
I was hoping to see it in LGR's hands next. That would have been EPIC!

Your intro gives me a warm fuzzy nostalgic feeling. Love it!
So much for everyone elses work on the thing. You had to show em all up by re-doing their work and such.
the very nice work of all the participants is possible because the Apple IIe was made out of a metal, solid, spatious case, along with STANDARD PC connectors on the back; this shows the importance of building in a non propietary way, as of today Apple uses all integrated one-piece electronics+cases+displays and even the screws are totally non standard (think trilobes and crap like that)
Still doesn't scare Louis Rossmann though
The award for the name "The Voiceover Guy" is The 8-Bit Guy!
8bit guy you totally nailed it, you did everything properly and upped the build standard of the machine, as a worker that ops for quality myself i really like what you did there :)

Bad idea, gov'na is too close to the russian word "govno", that means "shit".
Not everything revolves around Russia, man. Поверь мне, я сам из России.
Next one should be the "Keeping up with the Commodore" challenge (putting something into an Amiga or C64 case) or the "Think" challenge (building a modern PC into an old IBM PC case).
I honestly want to make my own "Lazy Green Giant," albeit running modern operating systems. First, I'd need to figure out how to make a writable 5-1/4" floppy drive. I don't think an integrated PS/2 port should be too much of a problem, though. Right?
I could get into that!
PS/2 ports are still on many modern boards.
WCBROW01 Really? That makes using legacy keyboards easier if that really is the case.
I think the hardcore gamers still use PS/2 keyboards, as it has much less latency compared to USB. That's the reason why gamer motherboards still have at least one PS/2 on them.
And of course the *8-bit governor* lol 😂 18:02

You should look up the Western Union Splice also called Lineman's Splice. If you didn't already know, it makes soldering wires together much easier.
And that splice makes soldering potentially unnecessary since solder makes a cable unbendable and brittle.
And that is why brick & mortar stores are dying. Ridiculous prices, lack of selection and the fact that you have to waste gas to get there and be disappointed.
We have a chain here which is doing JUST FINE. They serve all kinds of hobbies - RC flying and driving, miniatures and trains, PC components, music instruments, electronics components, tools and kits, security system installations, 3D printing, and tie them all together so person familiar with one hobby will be interested in the next, they probably realised that what they are selling is not electronics so they don't need to bother with competing with consumer electronics stores, but hobby experiences and DIY. They also have almost everything, there's a well-stocked back room, and if they don't have something, you get free shipping to the store with next day delivery, and once you're at the store, something might catch your eye, this is how they get you. The prices are of course spicy, but overall it's a pleasant experience and this is the single fastest way to get components and supplies.
Siana Gearz That's great, seriously wonderful... Now guarantee that in every small town across the world and it may be viable in 2018.
Ratchet, nope, for this business to be viable, it exactly can NOT be in every small town, it's one of the reasons such attempts around the world went down, they had too many and too small stores that couldn't pull in enough business. These sit smack dab in the best accessible spot of expensive cities where people are quite accustomed to everything being overpriced, are usually huge to give you the wide product selection, and have non-annoying but helpful and educated personnel. It's not accessible to everybody, just to customers that can keep such a business profitable. Their revenue keeps growing quite remarkably against the backdrop of consumer electronics chains stagnating, so apparently they found the formula.
There is some truth to that. I went to a local electronics store (the fact it even exists anymore given most are out of business is a small miracle) and tried to get a DVI to HDMI adapter.
All well and good, they had two. A Female to Male and a Female to Female.
One cost about $20, the other about $40...
Online I can get either of these for $10-15 at most, and if I put in a bit more effort, frequently $5 or less.
Now, I have no problem supporting local stores a little, but I'm not paying 4-8 times as much for something. That's just... I mean, really?
Double the price? Yeah, OK, fine. 3 times? That's pushing it. But 8 times as much? How does that even work?
Here someone has made business of selling all sorts of Chinese imports at a markup, with a little storefront and huge storage out the back where staff will go and get whatever you want to buy. Sure, it's about 3-5 times as expensive as ordering different electronic parts off Ali Express or Amazon (we don't really have Ebay over here), but you skip the 14-21 day waiting time to have it shipped. Bought a Raspberry Pi 3 + cabinet with fan + heatsinks + all sorts of cables, accessory cards etc to make my own Retropie complete with keyboard and controllers, for about 90 USD.
Love the neatness of The 8-Bit Guy make-over of that Retro Apple IIe Computer :)
Man. This was the most respectful and constructive critique i've heard of a hardware store... Unfortunately true for most Hardwarestores nearby to me... Gread Vid!!!!
It was so kind of you to not be as negative about the switch and power connector plate. I know it had to irk you.
I'm just wondering if you need to ship it back to California or if you ship to the winner. That computer's shipping could have bought something nice by now.
Metal shavings around electronics is making my eyes twitch. :(
Agreed. I would have removed everything once I decided what I wanted to do, then I would have done all the metal altering. those little shavings can be most disastrous.
Proper. Nice work. I can't leave things like that either. Makes projects a nightmare but better in the end lol.

I do Pi projects plenty so I think I may take a stab at this. Love your videos, 8-Bit Guy. They always make me beam with nostalgia.
I like pride of workmanship... but there's also being insulting. lol.
So cool! I wish this would happen more often!
Your video ar so relaxing and full of knowledge. I admire you my friend! All the best from Italy!
You took this to a whole new level than what was previously done to this machine
