  • Bruce Lee and Bob Baker had an epic battle in the movie Fists of Fury when Chen Zhen fought the Russian Strongman, Petrov, in the final act of the movie.
In the fight, Chen Zhen has to tap into his Lost Track Skill, or Mizongyi, to defeat Petrov, and the fight is meant to parallel the challenge fights Chen Zhen's Sifu, Huo Yuanjia, participated in against Western fighters.
But something that's even more interesting about this fight scene between Chen Zhen and Petrov is the story gaining steam online that the actors playing these characters, Bruce Lee and Bob Baker, some kind of real physical confrontation during an exhibition.
After hearing the story, I can help but ask the question as to why Bruce Lee almost killed Bob Baker?

From what I've read from the little-known information about Bob Baker was that he was a loyal student and close friend of his mentor Bruce Lee. He was referenced as being a quiet and reserved man and was very devastated after Bruce's death. I read he wasn't too much of a fan of being in the spotlight. And only taught Jeet-Kun Do to only a handful of students after his mentor's death. I can now understand why Baker was in quite a few of Bruce Lee's famous movies. I never get bored watching them.

I apologize for the error and I appreciate the correction from both of you. I first watched Fist of Fury when it was titled the Chinese Connection during the VHS days in the 1980's. I just started rewatching some of Bruce Lee's classic movies again and was aware of Bob Wall appearing in the movies Enter the Dragon and Game of Death. I think the Way of the Dragon was named Return of the Dragon during the VHS days I enjoyed watching Bruce Lee films.
I started rewatching Bruce Lee films again and was curious on why there are so many critics and even celebrities disrespecting Bruce Lee's legacy. I was reading about the feuds Bob Wall had with Steven Seagal. I won't mention anything negative about Steven Seagal although I was a bit surprised of some of his comments. An intelligent mind is an inquiring mind. It is not satisfied with explanations, with conclusions.
They are undoubtedly great in their respective sports but they are binded and limited to certain styles and patterns.
Like Bruce Lee said: "All fixed set patterns are incapable of adaptability or pliability. The truth is outside of all fixed patterns.”
And even malaipet is a fan of Bruce Lee. He also quotes from Bruce Lee:
"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
Conor McGregor UFC Fighter - Interview at UFC Fight Night 37 in 2014
“I have no doubt he would have been world champion in MMA, no doubt. He’s fluid, he’s loose, he’s fast. His movement is fluid, it’s efficient, it’s functional. So many guys are addicted to strength and conditioning, they just get bulked up and stiff and slow. Bruce was free, his body was nimble.”
Here’s a short story of Bruce by Hayward Nishioka :
Hayward Nishioka (1942 - ), a 9th degree black belt in Judo, former Judo Gold Medallist at the 1967 Pan American Games. He won five consecutive national championships from 1965 to 1970 and was ranked 5th in the world in 1965 and 1967.
On January 13, 1987, Nishioka, retired from competing and at the age of 44 tossed Rickson Gracie (age 28) with a number of throws at his Judo school. Nishioka admitted training with Bruce in the 60s and personally sparred with Bruce. He was in awe of Bruce’s exceptional martial art prowess.
I couldn't hold a candle to him (Bruce). He was too fast for me; he would tap my head before I even got set.
He was the quickest person I’ve ever seen. In that area he was king. And he knew it.
Nishioka said in fact, many martial artists had sparred with Bruce and had the similar experience as him but many would not admit, mainly because they were afraid of losing face. Richard Bustillo, a student of Dan Inosanto, said he personally saw a sparring session with Chuck Norris and Bruce that left Norris red faced. Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee said he would not spar Lee because he would knock you out. As Lee was experimenting and creating his own art, thus, he would take up most challenges. He sparred anyone who wanted to spar.
Bruce studied and mastered many different arts and techniques and was a very different martial artist in 72-73 than he was in the 60's. What is the consensus about Bruce from "real deal" fighters (Norris, Lewis, Wallace, Stone and Rhee) was that he was the fastest and possibly the strongest man that they had ever seen. Master Rhee has categorically stated: "I would demonstrate a kick to Bruce and a week later he would be able to do it as good as me”.
He is as heavy as a featherweight(64kg) but punches as hard as a heavyweight (90-120kg)
      - from Joe Lewis (Father of Kick-Boxing)
He has exceptional speed, many of his training partners have always said one thing in common : that no one could match his speed.
“Bruce Lee had his punching and closing speed measured with an electric timer at Glover's house.
In the book "Bruce Lee - Between Wing Chun and JKD", Glover states, Lee could land a punch in around five hundredths of a second (0.05 second) from 3 feet away, and could close from 5 feet away in around eight hundredths of a second (0.08 second).
While Glover's own times from three feet were between 11 and 18 hundredths of a second (0.11 and 0.18 second). Closing from a distance they were in the low twenties.”
To say his fighting style would not work in MMA is just being plain silly. His fighting style evolves over time. So it’s difficult to compare something that is constantly evolving to "today's" MMA, because you never know how would Bruce adapt.
These are legit examples of Bruce Lee’s phenomenal abilities.
Based on the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, he was already researching about grappling techniques.
Most would say Bruce Lee was just an actor.
However, if you get martial arts experts like Joe Rogan/MMA fighters to analyse his fight.
They would say : “his moves show perfect timing, something not achievable by being just an actor. He certainly did lots of sparring and had a really excellent sense of timing and flow”.
The way he fights now is similar to how MMA fighters fight. Mind you, he has been gone for 45 years and what he did 45 years back then was simply unknown to the world. Even the Gracies, Joe Rogan, Conor, Anderson Silva & etc have said that he is the pioneer of MMA.
Here we have Sugar Ray talking about Bruce Lee. When boxing legends like him, Mike Tyson speak so highly of Bruce Lee, you know that Bruce was a legit martial artist and not just a mere actor.
Unlike most traditional martial artist Bruce Lee didn’t study one thing, but rather everything. He studied multiple martial arts, and developed his own martial art that combined them all. Next to Krav Maga (an Israeli military self defense method) Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee’s method) is considered the second best martial art in the world for self defense.
Bruce trained full contact often against people bigger and stronger than him.
After all the founder of MMA is going to be a lot better at it than someone who learned MMA, because Bruce understood how and why the different forms worked. He would have chosen the best techniques to maximize his performance in the octagon, and focused on mastering them. He was also a master of studying his opponents; meaning he would have a different form and strategy against a striker than he would a grappler. His speed and reaction times were unmatched, and I don’t see anyone in his weight class touching him.

He was not only isolated and lonely but somewhat worried about his constant back pain and collapsing on the set of ETD. February 1972. I can’t help but think the disc issue pushed him toward some of the pain killers.
This idea that Bruce taking marijuana is a revelation from the letters is crazy. Marijuana is on the death certificate tox report. I read in more than one place that he preferred to eat it as it hurt his lungs to smoke.
The Robert Clouse biography briefly mentioned the effects of pain killers/ heavy training and Bruce’s sex drive. Way back in the 80’s when it came out.
This new era of Bruce Lee fans making him nearly a deity was exactly the opposite of what he stated he ever wanted. I seem to remember he said something about ‘man I can’t think of anything worse than being a picture on the wall of a school that people bow to one day’

Thank you Goldenbell Training for your insight into the legendary Bruce Lee, a great martial artist with a unique talent, like many stars, Lee was flawed & it is interesting to see an alternative insight into what may have contributed towards his untimely demise.
Bob Baker was a close friend & student of Lee's, alongside Joe Lewis during the 60's, in fact Baker was one of Lee's first students dating back to 1963, he played the main protagonist in Fist of Fury & was featured in Way of the Dragon, Bakers training with Lee began many years before those movies were filmed.
Lee collapsed whilst completing dubbing on his latest project & was rushed to hospital, the doctor treating him discovered swelling of the brain & gave him the drug Mannitol, which reduced the swelling & Lee regained consciousness & made a full recovery.
The doctor quizzed Lee on his taking of recreational drugs where Lee admitted using hash, the doctor suspected he was violently allergic to it & advised Lee to discontinue using the drug & Lee upon returning to Hong Kong, was given a medical which he passed & was given a clean bill of health, he'd stopped ingesting the drug which gave him a false sense of security & soon after he began ingesting it again, soon thereafter he collapsed a second time & they were unable to revive him.
The doctor who treated Lee & saved his life during his initial collapse was interviewed many years later & stated him not being surprised to hear of Lee's second admission & his passing, in fact they expected to see him again. He remained adamant that Lee's overuse of narcotics contributed towards his demise, the doctor tried to warn Lee over the dangers of using hash as a recreational drug & Lee didn't believe him, which cost him his life.

When Bruce Lee became famous Professor would invite him over and Bruce would just ask for his flight and room as Bruce was grateful for the times they spent together in Bruce Lee's lean years when he was living with his wife at James lee's house. Bruce died from complications from a heat stroke he previously had in China in a hot non air-conditioned editing room. The collapsing, headaches etc. came from that according to the autopsy show that went into detail about it. It also didn't help the fact he had his sweat glands removed from his arm pits months before his death. It makes sense medically. Untreated heatstroke can quickly damage the heart, kidneys, muscles and brain. It mentioned how the damage can get worse the longer treatment is delayed which increases the risk of serious complications or death

    • @GoldenbellTraining

The heat stroke theory was thoroughly debunked in a documentary that came out last year where Bruce's brother, Robert, was investigating Bruce's cause of death. Matt Polly came up with that theory. The sweat gland removal from the arm
pits was purely cosmetic, and it would not have contributed to a heat stroke. It's not much different from wearing an anti-perspirant.

The story goes that Lee pointed to Baker, who was with him, and told him Baker was his bodyguard and if he could beat him he would fight. Any truth to this, or did I remember it wrong?
As for the drug use, Lee stepped down off that pedestal when he became a Hollywood star- they all did. It reminds me of the Frazier episode where he doesn't want to do a commercial because he felt it demeaned his role as a legitimate psychiatrist. Niles compared him to Marylin Monroe, that he had already left the pure profession and entered show biz- and 'they have already looked up your skirt'. Lee as a struggling teacher, searching for the core of combative arts, is very different from Lee becoming a success in movies.

I like your honesty but pls if i can ask you something, if s there chance to find some lessons for people who don' wish to dive to deep into m. arts?
2nd question is how is possible that i kicked 2 bullies in a high school who trained karate. I didn't fought against them in the same time, also i have no formal training but i did had to fight often since i grew up in such part of town, in specific era .
Moreover i hate fights so i was usually try to avoid em and those bullies would perceive it as perfect opportunity to try to humiliate me. Simply i did trained swimming and my shoulders and arms could punch 10's of times fast without me getting tired, as i told i have no training in ma. arts but i did aimed for their nose, or any open part of body that would cause them pain.
One even hit me a few times and put an arm around my neck in order to choke me, so i garbed him my arm that was on my right side and pulled him for hair and my left hand that was beside his back i start to punch as hard as i could in the back of his head. Damn i was afraid when i saw that blood fallows down from his face and he was getting like some sort of seizure so i stooped immediately. You know His hair was shivering. Then his friends approached to take care of Him, and felt sorry.
i did reported myself to principle because i was afraid that i caused him some health issues. It ended all OK, He didn't came to school for a few days. His friend who wished to fight me that ended up in less bloody manner. One had a brown belt and another had green i think.
but the never ever tried to attack me again. I'm sure that they don't teach them to go and bully people or try to showing off.
Now i have to explanation for that except that i know how to fight dirty ala street fight were there are no rules and i was i a good shape. This story can be cheked out with people who went with me in that high school. To this day i hate to fight but when someone push you and with to attack you or even hit you , what could i do? Except to defend myself.
So i would like to learn at lest something how to defend myself with hitting someone in the nose etc, i won't like to hurt people and when they pass that line i had a bit of problem to control my anger and would go with all my ''power'' to try to hurt them which sucks. That is not OK.
I don't know why some bullies perceive avoids of a fight and conflicts as calling out for them to show off. That may be another reason why i won in that stupid schools fights because they were underestimated me, like ala ''how don't train m arts so he is essay target'' , i don't know is that the way some of those people thinking but they are descrace for karate. IMHO karate isn't about that at all or i got things in wrong way.
    Thx in adavce

Bob Baker a super heavyweight? Not a chance in hell, he's like almost the same size as Bruce Lee

I don't think he's a super-heavy weight either but he was a bit bigger than Bruce Lee,as for power I'm not really sure but pound for pound I'd think Baker was more powerful, but for fighting skill and accuracy, execution, speed and timing I'd say Bruce Lee was unmatched
