  • In this 1972 clip, Angela Davis makes her first national television appearance following her acquittal on charges of kidnapping, murder and conspiracy after the San Rafael courtroom shootout. In this exclusive interview with Black Journal host and producer Tony Brown, Davis talks about the surging political awareness of oppressive systems, such as prisons and the punishment of those who reach this political awakening.
Black Journal is the first nationally televised public affairs program produced for, about, and by Black Americans. Topics addressed by the series include the Black Power Movement, Black nationalism, the “Black is beautiful” movement, the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, the African diaspora, the Black student movement, Pan-Africanism, the media’s representation of Black people and more. Black Journal was produced first by National Educational Television (NET), the precursor to PBS, and later by WNET in New York.

It is as true today as the day she said it! America isn't the land of the free and the brave are often the victims who show up again and again.

Don’t you get it? Black panthers, SCLC, etc. paved the way for Blacks. At this time were there Black CEOs, managers/presidents of companies and corporations? I doubt it! The achievements we do have today were fought for by the Angela Davises. Duhhhhh . . . Learn about your history!@@BaldwinFanonGarveyTureShakurX

Outdated ya'll. Times have changed. I know you see successful brothers and sisters around you taking advantage of the same opportunities that are in front you. If you think we still are oppressed, you've chosen to purposely oppress your mind. No more excuses.

The very rich are committing atrocities on the world for that device you used to write this comment sir. The fact you don't think oppression exists while we live in a system that is proven to have recession and/or depression every 7 years and keeps people of color in positions where they are disenfranchised and murdered? You don't think we're oppressed with the largest prison population in the world. 1 million or more prisoners than CHINA who is over 5x our size. The fact that we send police to Israel to train with their brutal police so they can bring that back here? Fascism is creeping up everywhere. They want to turn us into machines to be controlled. They control the media and have tainted history. The very rich will utilize any tool to cement this shift. Whether it be racism, transphobia or Islamophobia. Have respect for yourself, fight against the systems that look at you like you are meat and a body.
