The response to this video has been amazing thank you all so much. Definitely going to focus on more long form content in the future. I've seen loads of people that actually want to watch the show themselves without my commentary. The show is notoriously hard to get hold of without major cuts and the aspect ratio being messed with. The easiest way is to get season 1 and 2 on amazon video make sure to only click the ones with the channel 4 watermark and blue banner. The britbox version has been heavily censored. This only works for people in the UK. Even a VPN won't work as it'll decline your payment if you try to buy it overseas. For everyone else it's a bit more tricky. It is on amazon but it's been heavily edited, with scenes cut and the aspect ratio messed with so everything looks more zoomed in, going against the entire point of the cinematography. If you have a VPN you can set your region to the UK and then search to buy the channel 4 version of Utopia from the UA-cam store. I bought it myself to test it and the aspect ratio is the same and the scenes are uncut. It's the best version you can get outside of the UK legally. The Utopia subreddit has a post explaining how to watch it untampered if you don't live in the UK. I think they're going to be more active again since this video's been released. I'll update this post if I get any more information. www.reddit.com/r/utopiatv/comments/j1efu8/how_to_watch_the_original_show_uncut/ TL;DR UK > US + ratio

Something I realized about why it's a Chinese sign for "rabbit" in particular. One of the more popular myths about the rabbit in China is related to the moon goddess Chang'e. The rabbit is portrayed within the moon, brewing the elixir of immortality (preservation, human survival). As to how it got there, well, one time during the moon festival celebration all the animals were giving something to the humans and the rabbit, having nothing to offer but its own delicious flesh, threw itself into the fire so the others could eat it. For that, they were placed in the moon, in plain sight, yet always disconnected. Again, being Mr Rabbit won't get you recognition, or fame, and you won't be noted in history - it's just sacrifice after sacrifice, dedicating your entire being to the cause and letting others feed off of it. One more way the network sees itself as martyrs, to bring salvation to the world through the ultimate sacrifice, which they view as noble.
I just finished the whole video. I seriously have an immense amount of respect for Pyro as a content creator, like I really hope everyone watching understands the genuine talent needed to be able to do what Pyro has managed to do with this video. I think this might be one of the greatest videos I've ever watched and that's me being 100% genuine. You've smashed it man
I watch it for third time now :D its great really.... The details on start and the fact that he talks about characters as he did not even know outcome yet...
I told my sister that I was watching a show called Utopia and she told me she had seen it. I said I was on season 2 and she didn’t know there was one. Then figured out she had watched the US version. Heartbreaking. Had to put her down.
Something really cool about the show I noticed on my like 5th or 6th watch through, Donaldson does actually do the correct "nice" thing when Becky tries to humanize with him. We see from Mark Carval later that he was faking the thoraxon and really just selling her opioids, so when she asked him to just give her the pills because it was the right person thing to do, he does actually show her his own messed up kindness by throwing the opioids into the river
I'm so fucking happy you managed to get this out without copyright strikes or claims, I'll be watching this over the next few days thank you for the content father
The torture scene with wilson was way worse in the original script. Wilson was strapped down and forced to watch League Of Legends, but this was too violent for British TV, and had been forced to change to something more tame.
I just realised that there is a slight parallel between mythological god, Odin and Wilson. The parallel being that Odin sacrificed his eye for all knowledge while Wilson had his eye taken for knowledge of who truly leads the world
fucking same. I started yesterday evening when he just posted it and had to finish it today. Man, I even dreamt about this show without even watching it myself.
The american remake is very deep. US Wilson's lost eye is the opposite one from UK Wilson, this symbolizes how the British drive on the opposite side of the road compared to America.
I mean tbf, that bit of analogy probably would’ve needed an entire room full of writers and philosophers because it would require more than 10 brain cells to create any subtlety or hidden meaning.
would be cool if channel 4 worked with Netflix more, I feel like a lot of their shit would do so well with the bigger outreach of Netflix (like end of the fucking world)
Channel 4 has some really good content. I'm from the United States so I have to find other means to watch shows via streaming services or piracy. Even the soap operas are debatably good. I just think it would be awesome if it was easier to access and more available worldwide. I think it be a good financial investment as well, for both parties.
Uk: so this is a thriller dark, creepy, violent mistery about conspiracy and the government, with events based on real life consequences and philosophical horror! Us:... oh so like, a marvel movie, with quirky characters and plot-device villains! UK: n-no, there are no good and bad guys just people who help you and people who do- Us: yeah! like a Marvel movie! with love interest! and shinenigans!
Yeah I wonder what the psychology behind that is. Why is it that I can’t get myself to watch critically acclaimed animes like cowboy beepbop yet I will gladly watch Vinesauce’s full lets play on some bootleg PS1 hack
@@JeremyBX My theory is that: 1. We enjoy learning information because it is useful to our survival, 2. The more information in more compact format the better (hence why TV is more entertaining than books as you are getting audio and visual information), 3. Someone commenting on a show is giving an extra level of information and removes the negative aspects (e.g. tension caused by suspense, disgust at violence)
finally got done watching this whole video, this is legit one of the most amazing tv series, I really wish and also hope that somehow Pyro's video gets a 3rd season to ever happen
I am so happy I watched this video. About halfway through, I paused, watch all of utopia seasons 1 and 2, then came back. it truly is the best show I have ever watched, and the soundtrack is amazing
Pyro is like every english teacher ever: "Her outfit can be interprated as her personality" "him not being able to close the door shows he has no control over his life" I'm acctually amazed by pyro noticing these little details, it's like art
Pyro said that he probably will not do another video as long as this again, he enjoyed the process but it's way too long and it's what kept him from making videos due to his mindset, he made this video in 3 months and that's constant working. Do I hope he makes a video like this again? Fuck yeah, will it happen? We'll never know
I'm a bit late to the party as usual. A couple of years ago (this is August 2024) Utopia came to my attention and I was so blown away I bought both series in a boxed set from Amazon. No cuts, proper ration, extras etc. I watch it at least twice a year as I never tire of it. I was so interested in the major theme I went and learnt about the Malthusian Disaster. Co-incidentally, I had re-watched both series just before I found this video. I even tried episode 1 of the USA version and you are quite correct - there is no comparison, I really enjoyed your take on Utopia. I will give you the highest compliment I can..........the British version brought me to tears several times, so did your video, for all the right reasons. The problem with a series as sublimely brilliant as Utopia is that nothing else comes close. I am doomed to watch mediocrity. But thank you for your hard work, it took me two nights but there was no way I wasn't going see it to the end, Cheers Sir!
Another dumb thing about the US remake: Jessica's tattoos. Every tattoo shop I've ever gone to requires some form of ID. Something Jessica would be waaaaaay to paranoid to have. Not to mention how they would make her much more recognizable, not something you'd want to have if you're trying to stay under the radar of a global conspiracy. Plus, fucking expensive. That's potentially several hundred dollars worth of ink on a woman who, theoretically, has never worked a job, is constantly on the move, and who is so on edge that she forgoes sex in case she has to make a break for it. But we're supposed to believe that she willingly walked into a business (possibly with CCTV,) showed a government issued ID, made an appointment, paid hundreds of dollars from her limited funds, and sat in a chair for several hours to get some leaves on her arm and calf?
Not to mention the constant upkeep you have to do after getting a tattoo to ensure it doesn’t get infected. I doubt she’d have the time to ensure that she puts some antiseptic cream on her arm or calf either. And that’s just a whole other risk for her because it could very easily cos major problems for her if it got infected.
Yes exactly, if they wanted to give her character some physical feature like that then stick and poke tattoos would make much more sense, but like you're saying that would put her at a huge risk for getting sick from infections. All in all story's shit -69/10
I'm only an hour into this video so maybe it's brought up in the video but wouldn't tattoos also be a way for people to identify her? Something she absolutely does not want
curiously, every single franchise that isnt born in USA and gets an USA redo to "appeal better to the public" becomes into an unsufrible mess which only redeeming quality comes from the "comentary" youtubers doing reactions or the "critics" youtubers roasting it to dust
One thing I noticed about Pietre is that you never see him blink onscreen (maybe I missed a few but as far as I’m aware he doesn’t) showing he’s simply unfazed by literally anything that happens to him. It’s such a small, insignificant detail that adds so much to his character.
One *notable* time when he blinks is Season 2, Episode 2, and it's *hilarious.* The "reunion" of Lee and Arby. They're seated at the table (quinoa, ha ha), and Lee says, "Nothing's over. They're starting up again. And I know things. Example: I know they want *you*"... (Arby blinks twice here)... "for a job." That whole Arby and Lee reunion scene is my favorite scene in the entire series. Brillance from start to finish.
@@Crow_Mauler_ ok but I feel like that could’ve worked as maybe a rebirth for him, with him coming back to life and finally coming to grips with his past, and therefore blinking now too, but we never got a season 3 so who knows?
I think Milner expected a very different answer to this question in 3:15:33 and her gestures show that. Like if Wilson had said that he sees a harmless middle aged woman or literally any other response than calling her a murderer she would segue into appearances being deceiving. Except Wilson is not blind to the damage she has done, he is just turning a blind eye to it (ha ha get it?) and is fixated on that aspect of the network’s methods, after all he lost his eye, father and sense of normalcy to these same methods. And you can see Milner’s disposition switch from being comforting and reassuring to being cold and defensive.
im actually quite glad that i found the US version.. i thought the idea was great but the execution sucked so i searched for videos explaining how shit the US show actually is and i found a comparison video and fell in love instantly with the UK version
omg i was trying to watch it and clicked on the US version instead of the UK one for an episode and a half I was so confused why Pyro made an 8 hour video on it
Why on earth did they even make a US remake of it? I’ve only seen one or two examples where the US remake was even nearly as good as or better than the original and it’s not like it was 40+ years old or in a foreign language (which I could understand slightly more). The only thing this one accomplished was making me appreciate the original more by contrast.
wilson is definitely the most interesting character. how can someone go from a conspiracist hiding in his dads attic, erasing himself from the internet to leading the conspiracy and cutting himself like that, fully sacrificing himself to the cause and becoming a merciless killer?? and then make it COMPLETELY REASONABLE AND UNDERSTANDABLE???? such an interesting development, wish we got to see it in a 3rd season
What's neat is that he is arguably the best possible heir for Mr. Rabbit, since he basically has no identity on the Internet, he essentially doesn't exist.
@@StrikeWarlock so true! Plus anyone who probably knew him in person is either dead or captured by him. He very much became Mr. Rabbit in the end and I love his character. I wish we got to see how much worse he would have gotten compared to Milner
@@dragondog1017 the only people that know he exists is his dad, and the main group, his dead is dead in the gutter and the group is still under The Network Custody. So yeah, unless Wilson has friends (which I think he doesn't considering he lives in an attic).

@@theyescapedtheweightofdarkness yes I agree after the UK version and the plot twists and everything coming together like making a amazing dish starting with a Mizan plus I just got bored and I’m rewatching also another great thing is that in the UK version it’s one of those rare shows where everything is done well, filmatogrophy, composition, writing and theratical scenery
the american version was so lame and infuriating i stopped watching the video after pyro explained a bit of it. the original was a dark and depressing show full of plot twists and great characters the american version was like every teenager quirky adventure show. also making like 40% of the white characters black seems like forced wokeness
I love that Mr Rabbit is named after rabbits, animals that are typically associated with mass breeding and large quantities of children, subtle irony like that is why I love this show.
Can we talk about the fact that Michael in the US version is literally being denied equipment and every thing he has requested but he is able to get the DNA of a dead kid that had a virus and he doesn't question this.
I think he’s just covering his face from getting blood on it lol. I think it’s meant to show how used to killing he is and how depersonalized he’s become from it
I'm just going to say it. I know you said it would be 8 hours long. And I don't think prior knowledge can quite adequately prepare someone for a video showing up in their subscriptions with 7:41:00 in the bloody timeslot. Incredible man. You've REALLY Mastered the art of stretching a video past the 10 minute point huh? I respect it.
Jessica’s US version really bothers me after seeing the UK version. Beyond just making her less likeable or understandable the performance really misses the mark. In the UK version the actor did an amazing job making her feel like an out of place outcast, she was cold, unpredictable and had this strange alien quality to her speech and movements. Then the US version comes along and just feels like an edgy cool girl that gets added to every other show. Absolutely fantastic.
I agree, not to mention they are depicted as not like normal, quirky, cool and edgy and it ruins their writing it's disappointing how common this poor writing is in most female American characters to make them "badass". (Hopefully I wrote this whole thing right)
I think Milner wasnt really in a genocide. I think the line about the genocide is intended to make the audience realize later that she already knew about Philip before she met him. She tells him she was in a genocide because she knows he survived the Holocaust and she wants to earn his trust quickly so he'll talk to her about his idea to save the world, but i think she already knew about it.
I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but the conflict of Wilson has been hinted at since the beginning. He's spent the last five years erasing himself from anything. The internet, banking records, licenses. He wasn't just invisible but he was an empty glass jar. His character was someone who will be heavily influenced by the course of the show. Being lied to by his friends, tortured by Lee and Arby, the death of his Father and Letts explaining what Corvadt's main goals are filled that jar. THis transformation into the antagonist at the end of the first season is sad to see, but it's 100% justified when it does happen.
ngl I wouldn't call him an antagonist, sure we are meant to see the network as bad but are they really tho? cause in this universe, maybe the network is needed, they are selfless they do not care if they die, they just wanna have the plan go down and save humanity, after all isn't doing things even if they are bad with good intention what makes a person good? idk just food for thought
The fact that the US version unironically has the Rabbit say, “We did it! We created a monster!” legitimately sounds like self-parody. Like, holy shit, you might as well have one of the fucking Harvest members tap their fingers together like Mr. Burns and say, “Ah yes, our evil plan is coming together!” That’s so incompetently unsubtle
@@bandawin18 As an Aussie, this is actually something I've noticed. When you see a good American version of a tv show, you can almost 100% guarantee that you will get a less bloated, more witty, less over-explained version from the Brits.
one thing im disappointed that this show doesnt actually (seemingly) interrogate is ecofascism - a very niche environmentalist belief that can perfectly describe the beliefs the network was founded on. ecofascism purely believes that overpopulation is, in and of itself, the issue, and fails to acknowledge global and systemic issues of distribution and wealth. you could say that the network has just enough influence to do what they do in the show, but not enough to actually rework global distribution systems or implement clean energy globally - however, milner has direct access to hundreds of billions in wealth, as shown by the scene where she explains V day to jeff. so a discussion of what kind of person would choose to sterilise a world instead of improving it would be nice. and i do think its more in milners character to choose the former - but a diagetic investigation of that fact would be really engaging, and could maybe open the series up to seeing what kinds of people would CHOOSE the former over the latter as well.
Why would they criticise their current real world process of far left ecofascism 😂 that's like letting the system/network to investigate itself naivety abounds all around me I swear.
The show isn't meant to spoonfeed people sociopolitical philosophies or motives, it's simply showcasing them at an extravagant scale, and letting the viewer come to conclusions about the underlying personalities and philosophies of the different characters. It's literally spoken out loud multiple times within the show "there are no sides, only people who help you, and people who don't". The water is much murkier than political labels. This is the biggest problem with the American adaptation, and most current day hollywood productions in general. They just can't help but treat viewers like thoughtless sheeple, incapable of thinking critically and reading between the lines. They spoonfeed, over explain, and exposition dump every bit of information to make sure even a mosquito could follow along the plot. It's just horrible writing, all with real modern political and racial narratives pumped in and manipulating/altering the intended moral, because if you don't have your ethnic minority and LGBTQ+ and neoliberal socialist virtues front and centre in your project, Hollywood just won't fund or respect you or your work.
I see what you mean, but I don't think that's necessary. Either suspension of belief or people can think about it themselves, the show already leads into that conversation topic
There is a lot left to explore. Shame UK version stopped. The layers of command and control, pulling the strings. Wilson's arc is fantastic. Refreshing to see long view humanity on the screen.
my mom actually watched the american remake without knowing it was a remake, when i asked her if she wanted to watch utopia with me she said "that show sucked" so i made her sit down and watch the first episode of the british version and she got hooked, broke my heart to tell her that it got canceled
The genophage was a good thing to bring up, because the writers of Mass Effect actually wrestle with this concept better. Like Janus, the genophage was designed to maintain a stable population--just keep living like normal, trying to have kids like normal, and enough children will be born to keep everything steady. But that's not what happened--removing the ability to have kids from most krogan robbed their lives of meaning. So many of them no longer cared, went off to live lives entirely based around gratification, with absolutely no concern for survival. On the other hand, some clans did try to cope with it, by treating women like baby factories, hoarding them to try and grow armies to use against the other clans. The result was immense societal breakdown; even their own, few sacred traditions were cast aside by a race now bitter and fatalistic. Of course, this was done in self-defense, against an aggressor that was killing millions, by a bunch of other races, so the situation is not exactly the same. But the idea that you could neuter 90-95% of the human race and expect things to continue on as normal, for some kind of gradual reduction in population to a more sustainable level, is crazy, for all the same reasons they give for why a lack of resources will lead to violence. If you think fighting for limited supplies of oil and copper would be brutal, imagine the fighting over fertile women, over the ability of groups to maintain their existence or even thrive, at least relative to their neighbors. The whole planet would erupt in violence, as groups (nations, religions, whatever) fought for what they believe to be their very survival. Those able to have kids would be sequestered in bunkers, churning out children--those who can't would likely find themselves essentially enslaved, unless they were lucky enough to get into a position of power. If nukes start flying, well, there goes the whole "It's for the planet" excuse. Not to mention, what if it works TOO well? What if EVERYONE is infertile, or such a massive percentage that the human race can't survive? Whoops!
can't believe how they absolutely butchered Pietre in the American version, him going from a uncomfortable but efficient killer who doesn't take time in his kills (because why would he) to the exact opposite
4:27:15 i am Romanian and i just want to say that the way Marius says this line has such a tone of "40 year old Romanian man living on a farm" energy. like what he said literally translates to "ayo old man you speak Romanian?" and Phillip replies "yes i speak the Romanian language". i haven't seen the series but based on pyro's description of Marius this line and tone fits him absolutely perfectly It's also always fun to hear, as a romanian, non Romanian people fumble with â, ă, ț and such. You can tell that phillip's actor was just given a romanian line to read because he pronounces â and ă as just "a", meanwhile Marius's actor being natively Romanian can pronounce them correctly. ALSO also, Pietre translates to rocks (plural) in Romanian. if Pietre's dad could speak Romanian maybe he was actually named after rocks? think about it, Pietre is monotone, cold and doesn't show much emotion, much like a rock. just seemed a little interesting to me
In my opinion it makes sense that Phillip would talk broken Romanian, since it's not a first language. Pietre's meaning is indeed interesting, thank you for sharing!
Absolutely amazing to see the extraordinary amount of engagement on this, a 7.5 hour video, so long after the original series was cancelled one season too early. Could this provide a glimmer of hope for a S3 of the UK version?!
The color palette in the UK version feels so distinct. The deeply saturated colors just gives you the feels and kind of misleading in good way where it seems childish, yet actually violent. It also helps me focus on the characters better for some reason
The last two hours or so where he's going over the remake fill me with such an intense rage lmao. I've never even heard of Utopia, the original or remake, until watching this and I was legit getting mad at every wrong decision they made creatively for that show lol
Pyro has literally alpha male mentality: -Doesn't upload anything for 3 months. -Drops a massive ass 8 hours long video. -Goes in his bathtub again for another 3-5 months.
This whole video was a masterpiece, but god the American breakdown was hard to watch after being completely enthralled on the UK side for 5 hours.. and the outro montage was an absolute incredible section.
@@Icosiheptagon I mostly agree but part of me still thinks about the timeline where David Fincher did work on the reboot. At the bare minimum it wouldnt have been even close to the trashfire we got.
I watched the first 5 hours almost in one sitting, but when the american version was discussed I took breaks constantly just not wanting to see any more of...that.
The way Pietre was handled in the US version removed pretty much all threat from his character. The UK character was threatening because of the slow and deliberate way he spoke, and the way he slowly waddles from place to place while still catching up. The US version has pretty much none of this and the tone of his voice makes him sound like a child rather than a threatening killing machine.
I think what makes me hate him is just how he just lacks subtlety like, let’s say you are making a show and a character is christian or sumn you would think to be subtle like let’s say they are put in a situation where they have to kill or sumn, you would make them pray in silence, ask for God’s forgiveness or just anything subtle. the creator of the US version of Utopia would prob give the character a cross necklace, make them carry a bible everywhere and repeat verses from the bible just so you get it in your head that they are christian
8:08 wow wtf I didn’t catch onto that when I watched the show, I stopped watching halfway like a while back but might start up again soon, thanks for that analogy tho 🙏🏽🙏🏽
That's actually pretty cool. What does the US remake do? Make literal rabbits the carriers of the virus. I swear they killed off anyone in the set that proposed to be subtle in the show
@@matthewbaang8749 really? fuck those guys rabbits are good pets. also I think it's more that the general audience of America hates subtlety and slower moments. i say this as someone who has lived my entire life in America we don't usually like subtle things in our media and shows that make you think will generally be viewed much less than the "ha ha funny laugh track sitcom" or "humans are trash people let's give these horrible people fame and money for no fucking reason" I apologize on behalf of most americans honestly show writers like Vince Gillam are more an accident than the norm.
@@Crystal_Dylan yeah, if you haven't seen that part of that video, basically the group went to burn down a travelling zoo that was suspicously always there whenever the virus spread in a certain location. they gunned all animals, mostly rabbits to prevent the spread, took one with them for no reason, and made possibly the dumbest plot point in the show, by (spoilers) Jessica being bit by the infected rabbit after sticking her own finger in the cage. i don't know why they chose Jessica Hyde, the only professional in the group to do this. Also, you don't really need to apologize for Americans lacking subtlety, it ain't your fault. The US remake has a lot of faults, even without the hindsight of the UK version there are obviously terrible moments. the not-so-subtle rabbit infection was just one of them

At the meeting between Lee and Pietre around 3:09:38 , the outfits being yellow and blue respectively is insanely poignant I think. Lee - wearing a bright suit in parallel to the hyper-saturated colour scheme of the show itself - indicates in his mere appearance that the conspiracy holds power over every and any perspective, including the viewers. In comparison, Pietre’s blue appearance is most likely in direct reference to the colour that the protagonist group had agreed to wear on their very first meeting. This is epic?! It depicts Pietre’s move towards the opposition but reinforces that he’s still in the early stages and is still wholly impressionable, just as the group were at the start of series one. On top of that, the two colours are opposite each other on the colour wheel?? And so many of the times we see scenes with both anti- and protagonists the colour scheme becomes green. Green being the colour of nature maybe is important? Both groups are both on opposing sides regarding the well-being of Earth yet neither can reach the truth in how to truly save the planet because they are limited to their primary colours/mindsets. It’s fight (blue, resisting the totalitarian reich of enforced sterilisation) vs flight (yellow, running away from a perceived threat by attempting to remove it entirely). It’s also an amazing statement on the left/right side of modern politics which removes all intersectional concepts within realistic society. Dude, this show is insane. The commentary on class hierarchy? Bringing in people from all walks of life to emphasise the different socioeconomic groups that are impacted by the decisions of the few?? I’m on my fifth glass of wine and Pyro you have changed my life by making this video.
Wilson's shift from a conspiracy theorist to head of the conspiracy is such a great and original curveball for character development. It's a shame that everyone was robbed of a 3rd season. I'd love to see Wilson's wrath against the main group fully realized

Show cancellations are generally the most frustrating and baseless stifling of art we are privy to in the modern world. We get to see on the low end millions of dollars thrown into a project to see an idea come to life, an entire season at the least of story being established, then because sales figures are a percent lower than investors were hoping for they cancel it, leaving the story in limbo entirely by choice and abandoning the IP because if something doesn't make fast money then it is scary and might not ever make money and we all know art is no place for risks.
Yeah, no, that's idiotic. There are tons of awful, just, completely awful pieces of trash that no one watches because they are bad and which get rightfully canceled because no one watches them. Pretending every cancellation is some razor thin margin where it was only 1% lower than a suit's expected profit margin and some unjust "stifling of art" is hyperbolic rhetoric of the most hysterical kind. 90% of all "art" produced is crap. Most of it should be canceled after episode 1, the first draft, or while it's still stuck in the no-talent hack who's going to splurt it onto the world's head. Acting like audience reactions (which ARE the market solution known as ratings) are bad is elevating far too many pieces of tripe for the sake of a much, much smaller amount of decent art that goes unrecognized.
@@MidlifeCrisisJoe Yeah, but then you have stuff like Infinity Train that is really good and has a big enough following, but it still gets cancelled for no real reason and there's no way to keep the story going because the copyright holders are CN.

A lot of the fear in the original comes from ambiguity. The fear of having a man you don't know ask questions about a woman you don't know, slowly and painfully. We don't get that as the audience in the US remake. We know who Jessica Hide is, and so there's no fear there. In addition, I think that the US version lacks a lot of the sophistication that the villains have. Lee and Pietre are so frightening because they are cold, emotionless, and methodical. Always very calm and clean. US Rod and Arby are nothing like this.
I know I am quite late to this, but is it just me or does the webpage wilson is on at 6:43:39 look like a literal peice of paper taped onto the computer screen?? and just editing this, every single computer or phone screen not directly shown to move at any point
Love how the villains in this aren’t some over the top evil/black and white. There is some logic that they could actually be the good guys, and that’s the most dangerous thing about people in real life who think this way. This is something Hollywood always gets wrong.
We stan these bad guys. They are well written and they spittin straight facts and people cant stop having 4 kids for no reason even though they live in a first world country and are plenty well off. Even close family members of my own have done it. Im almost done with his season one analysis on this video but damn so far im almost with the bad guys. I wouldn’t bring this situation about myself but I wouldn’t fight it either. Its a thing I’ve been concerned about along with most scientists, especially as one in a mentally unwell state in general. The way they go about it isn’t okay but if something like this naturally occurred without shooting hundreds of random people for no reason and possibly a genetic mutation or something we cant even really be mad at that point. Edit: nvm the whole nazi shit is wack definitely don’t stan HOW/WHAT they’re saying/doing for these things… if you’re going to prevent humans from breeding you shouldn’t be able to select WHO does get to reproduce. It’s still 500mil ppl. Even if some bad diseases get left in the genome thats NATURE. Granted, you want to make sure all 500mil don’t ALL have crippling genetic problems but otherwise it needs to be almost if not entirely pure random.
Im officially 6 hours and 5 mins in, the fact that there is still solid editing and care put in this far along is just impressive to say the least. I pray this video gains massive traction and the uk utopia gets a part 3 to tie it up. EDIT: just finished the last hour or so. What a masterpiece of a show and video.
i watched this video in 3 different days: season 1 season 2 and the US reboot. ngl, i was helluva engaged over how the plot was explained within season 1 and 2, but when it came to the US reboot, while also being well aware how the original UK plot went. The third day witnessing the video was just a mix of laughing my ass off and experiencing cringe on how it was rewritten, over how badly the US reboot portrayed it. PS: The original UK show not getting a 3rd season continues to be, to this day, a fucken crime.
Going from the UK version to the US version is actually one of the most Jarring experiences I’ve had with a piece of art. How can the same story be told so well and then so terribly.
@@ShitpostShuster The US has produced some of the greatest films and television series of all time though, that most certainly isn't the reason. You'd think the problem is Amazon then, but then they have shows like The Boys and Invincible which perfectly emulate the source material. The Boys even being better than the source material; elevating it beyond the superhero hate porn written by the author. I think this is more of a problem with the people directly involved with writing and producing the show, they messed up.
I remember getting a Twitch ad for the US version and I was watching it thinking... hang on... this is ripping off Utopia! Then it hits me with the title card. I was disgusted. Fucking US remakes man.
@@jarlsterra American recreations of English TV more often than not go VERY wrong, there’s obviously outliers to that such as the office, but generally our subtle humour and nuanced way of conveying information doesn’t appeal to the American way of making the point very obvious which completely betrays most of the source material
** MAJOR SPOILER ** Just finished watching this again after watching the show and I realised something. Wilson in the beginning tells the group about wiping every bit of info about him on the web, making him "invisible". I take this as foreshadowing him becoming Mr Rabbit since Milner did the same thing by killing all those people who had seen her.
I wish this comment wasn't so high up. I was only an hour in when I saw it, and it spoiled the next 6 hours for me. It's fine to post, just very unfortunate placement in the comments section.
The entirety of my past two days have been waking up, going to work, coming home and watching four hours of this video, then falling asleep. One of the most amazing, in-depth videos ever made. I just hope this spreads enough awareness about Utopia to get a season three made. One can only dream...
36:19 - you missed the opportunity to show Wilson got his head clear and had a plan. He plays like he is totaly blind, amining randomly, screeching like on verge of insanity - while he can still see something, very very blurred. When he is close enough, stops playing and look and aim at him directly.. "you know I can see you still" - then shoots from point blank.
1:43:00 I think R.B.'s "don't look" shooting style may have actually evolved out of that. The actor tries the firearm out and flinches, and thinks of how *a child* would deal with the stimuli shock, let alone the horror of looking at someone you are killing. He's been doing this since he was a kid, his whole *assassination style* is something a kid would need to do: walk right up to someone unsuspecting, get up close and turn away from the loud bang, then leave the area --and suppress that trauma!-- Doesn't need to suppress it since he's numb to it... though they establish the character didn't really *like* doing it, and had a constant inner struggle over it. "Turning a blind eye" to the murders he commits, literally, seems pretty fitting.
@@solderfumes true! He wouldn't need to suppress it since he's numb to it... though they establish the character didn't really *like* doing it, and had a constant inner struggle over it. "Turning a blind eye" to the murders he commits, literally, seems pretty fitting.
Do you think the casting for Wilson went like "We need an ideal actor for this" and then Adeel Acktar just gives them a call and says "lads you're not gonna believe it"?
RIGHT, i was listening to this video as background sound and didn't notice that pyro said his actual name and not "ideal actor" and occasionally went "wow he really likes this actor huh" but i mean, either way, both names refer to him
I love how pyro went from mlg parodies and commentary videos to making 8 hours analysis. He is one of the few youtubers who's content actually changed for the better through out time.
I agree, like most youtubers go from doing nice little charming content to, DSMP IMPOSTER DREAM 500IQ SQUID GAME. But pyrocynical actually got better over time.
i love how they forecasted Wilson's progression and his demise into what he became when he said that over 5 years he wiped all traces of himself, becoming a perfect Rabbit, someone with no trace or previous history in a world where everything is logged, i didnt even realise it until my second watch.
@@tamerthrone4133 God I am so tired of that sort of meta humor being shoved into every bit of entertainment now. "look how aware we are, guys! do you like the show now?"
One thing you never pointed out is that Rabbits are known for reproducing at an extremely high rate. A diabolical villain hell-bent on making most of the population infertile dawns the monicker of an animal that makes babies like there’s no tomorrow. The irony, wether purposeful or not, is a little funny
Another thing I noticed which seems to be the root of a lot of it's issues is how the American version seems to refuse to portray the actual US government as being one with the bad guys. In the UK version, the British government and the corporations were intertwined, both of their political and/or promotional systems based on what the network wanted. But here, we see that the US government is like completely innocent and like tricked rather than being just another pawn in the Harvest's chess game. It's pretty scummy, reeks of American exceptionalism which is weird cause it's a fucking conspiracy show, and also ruins a lot of plot points. Also that and making Jessica just a straight up villain who like you end up hating more than anyone else in the series
All of the best american-centric conspiracy theories place the US government at the center of some globoX agenda or somesuch shit. Sounds like they probably just didn't want to do something terribly insulting like raise the concept of the US government being corrupt to a dedicated patriot (guantanamo bay is the only appropriate price to pay)
@@GlobstersMessenger as an American I agree, we’re not supposed to praise the US government, in fact the opposite were supposed to criticize the gov any moment we get and praise the people of America, as the people are what make America, America.

That's interesting! Thank you.

5:36:58
One *notable* time when he blinks is Season 2, Episode 2, and it's *hilarious.* The "reunion" of Lee and Arby. They're seated at the table (quinoa, ha ha), and Lee says, "Nothing's over. Except Wilson is not blind to the damage she has done, he is just turning a blind eye to it (ha ha get it?) and is fixated on that aspect of the network’s methods, after all he lost his eye, father and sense of normalcy to these same methods.

The jar was filled?😳

ngl I wouldn't call him an antagonist, sure we are meant to see the network as bad but are they really tho? cause in this universe, maybe the network is needed, they are selfless they do not care if they die, they just wanna have the plan go down and save humanity, after all isn't doing things even if they are bad with good intention what makes a person good? idk just food for thought

As a US resident, I'm sorry my country fucks up good British shows(especially the inbetweeners)
that's American tv in a nut shell, everything is spoon fed in a condescending manner like the average person is a dribbling mouth breather.
@@bushiido8494 it's quite insulting too, it's how basically every big budget show or movie is made here though

Whoops!

4:27:15 i am Romanian and i just want to say that the way Marius says this line has such a tone of "40 year old Romanian man living on a farm" energy. like what he said literally translates to "ayo old man you speak Romanian?" and Phillip replies "yes i speak the Romanian language". i haven't seen the series but based on pyro's description of Marius this line and tone fits him absolutely perfectly
It's also always fun to hear, as a romanian, non Romanian people fumble with â, ă, ț and such.

The way Pietre was handled in the US version removed pretty much all threat from his character. The UK character was threatening because of the slow and deliberate way he spoke, and the way he slowly waddles from place to place while still catching up. The US version has pretty much none of this and the tone of his voice makes him sound like a child rather than a threatening killing machine.

like, let’s say you are making a show and a character is christian or sumn
you would think to be subtle like let’s say they are put in a situation where they have to kill or sumn, you would make them pray in silence, ask for God’s forgiveness or just anything subtle.
the creator of the US version of Utopia would prob give the character a cross necklace, make them carry a bible everywhere and repeat verses from the bible just so you get it in your head that they are christian
I like if Arby in the US remake was called Peter, like pietre in the UK version, but they called JhOnnnn.

I’m on my fifth glass of wine and Pyro you have changed my life by making this video.

simple as
Show cancellations are generally the most frustrating and baseless stifling of art we are privy to in the modern world.
We get to see on the low end millions of dollars thrown into a project to see an idea come to life, an entire season at the least of story being established, then because sales figures are a percent lower than investors were hoping for they cancel it, leaving the story in limbo entirely by choice and abandoning the IP because if something doesn't make fast money then it is scary and might not ever make money and we all know art is no place for risks.
and then they spend hundreds of millions on superhero trash
Yeah, no, that's idiotic. There are tons of awful, just, completely awful pieces of trash that no one watches because they are bad and which get rightfully canceled because no one watches them. Pretending every cancellation is some razor thin margin where it was only 1% lower than a suit's expected profit margin and some unjust "stifling of art" is hyperbolic rhetoric of the most hysterical kind.
90% of all "art" produced is crap. Most of it should be canceled after episode 1, the first draft, or while it's still stuck in the no-talent hack who's going to splurt it onto the world's head. Acting like audience reactions (which ARE the market solution known as ratings) are bad is elevating far too many pieces of tripe for the sake of a much, much smaller amount of decent art that goes unrecognized.
why isn't this the top comment yet?

A lot of the fear in the original comes from ambiguity. The fear of having a man you don't know ask questions about a woman you don't know, slowly and painfully. We don't get that as the audience in the US remake. We know who Jessica Hide is, and so there's no fear there.
In addition, I think that the US version lacks a lot of the sophistication that the villains have. Lee and Pietre are so frightening because they are cold, emotionless, and methodical. Always very calm and clean. US Rod and Arby are nothing like this.

He's been doing this since he was a kid, his whole *assassination style* is something a kid would need to do: walk right up to someone unsuspecting, get up close and turn away from the loud bang, then leave the area --and suppress that trauma!--
Doesn't need to suppress it since he's numb to it... though they establish the character didn't really *like* doing it, and had a constant inner struggle over it. "Turning a blind eye" to the murders he commits, literally, seems pretty fitting.
He didn’t need to suppress the trauma, his dad made him have no emotion in the first place.

Binged Utopia in 2 days. Thank you for introducing me to one of the best (and worst) shows I've ever seen.

Do you think the casting for Wilson went like "We need an ideal actor for this" and then Adeel Acktar just gives them a call and says "lads you're not gonna believe it"?
RIGHT, i was listening to this video as background sound and didn't notice that pyro said his actual name and not "ideal actor" and occasionally went "wow he really likes this actor huh" but i mean, either way, both names refer to him
Wilson Wilson was really played by the ideal actor
lol
Any know the name of the music that plays at 1:14:44 ? Ive definitely heard it before but i cant figure out what game its from.
But pyrocynical actually got better over time.
truly great character development, i legit enjoyed this whole thing
It’s a good character arc for the youtuber anime.
I kinda feel like most youtubers advance to something better or different, it’s subjective really
Makes me sad about what happened to prestonplayz…
Pietra is the best character in this, dude went from terrifying killer to nice guy who's still a terrifying killer
Edit: Yo when did this get 2k likes
it's Pietre

i love how they forecasted Wilson's progression and his demise into what he became when he said that over 5 years he wiped all traces of himself, becoming a perfect Rabbit, someone with no trace or previous history in a world where everything is logged, i didnt even realise it until my second watch.
And then there’s US Wilson
@@tamerthrone4133 I'm sorry i don't know what you're talking about, there is no US version of this show. I refuse to believe there is one.
@@PollyWaffle263 did you love his speech about why Cake mixers and tchotchkes are evil, while talking to absolutely no one, I sure did
@@tamerthrone4133 God I am so tired of that sort of meta humor being shoved into every bit of entertainment now. "look how aware we are, guys! do you like the show now?"
If your name is Adeel Akhtar you really don't have a choice in deciding what job you want to have in life. He was literally born to be an ideal Actor.
The most underrated comment. You're a genius
One thing you never pointed out is that Rabbits are known for reproducing at an extremely high rate. A diabolical villain hell-bent on making most of the population infertile dawns the monicker of an animal that makes babies like there’s no tomorrow. The irony, wether purposeful or not, is a little funny
That is actually very cool, i was thinking of that too, and from all the small details in the show i believe it was intentional.
could that be why they have so many people behind?
Or that rabbits can be matriarchal, so the twist that the rabbit is actually a woman is foreshadowed.
I mean to be fair the US government definitely comes off like it could be tricked into taking place in a conspiracy.
@@turner15 yeah there’s some pretty fucking stupid people in power
@@kw1610 All of them well past retirement age for any other white collar job.
Pyro: “I just love this comic by the way,”
Becky: “It’s a graphic nooovel!”
In the words of Alan Moore "Graphic novels are just more expensive comics"
"I think a child needs love" from Pietre gets me every single time :(
