When I was a young Agricultural Engineer we use to always start the Majors first in bad weather then we would pull start the modern stuff that would be difficult to start. The Major would start with minimal battery capacity some with mechanical wind up starters were even easier. The Fordson Major and Super Major probably the best Tractor built in the 1950's and early 1960!

Great old Tractors some where fitted with mechanical windup starter motors. These particular machines had an inline pump that could push anything, oil, muck even frozen fuel. The lovely noise is actually the injection pump.

The one we had , had a decompression lever on the valves . We lived way up in the mountains of central south island New Zealand and it used to get very cold up there . We also had two Case TK 1200's that could really deal to snow . One big snow we had was five feet deep and killed 800 of our sheep . Ah , the memories . Ha !

Ah the Fordson Power Major. My father had a cold start method for Majors.
He would do the morning milking, put a small bonfire under the tractor, go in for breakfast, come back out and strike it up.
Thinking on, Elf and safety would have a fit

@@pistolpeds We often used to put paraffin heaters under engine sumps in those days to make starting easier. If not available, a small fire. Why not, as long as it's under control? Same thing for when it was really cold and the diesel froze. The UK's not like that now, of course.

@@46harry Yeah of course I know that. But when you buy a new car, do you just treat that like shit too? I mean rev it to 7.000 when it´s cold? Wash it only one time every 3 years? You sound a bit like my sister. Her car probably has 2.000 dents and she doesn´t mind rev´ing her car to the mentioned 7.000 rpm when its cold. She just doesn´t cara a bit. Me on the other hand - I can spend 30-40 hours on machine polishing my car and making it look like brand new. I get every little scratch fixed, because I can´t stand looking at it. I have a Ford 4100 tractor from 1981 that is parked inside and that I try to keep in as good a shape as possible. I like everything that has an engine, whether it is a tractor, a car or a motorbike. About my own cars and tractor, it just gives me joy seeing it in good condition, and if I spend 50.000 Euros on a car I also treat it well. Maybe it´s just me who is strange. But I guess we are just different when it comes to that

I just got a 54 major with a front loader. starts great. noticed pulsing coolant hose. Head gasket? Also when I only use it for the loader or in the winter to blade snow it wet stacks any idea how I can stop that. I'm thinking about a PTO hydraulic pump hooked to a restricting valve and a small reservoir to simulate load on the engine and just let it recirculate into itself?

i had a 1950s reconditioned engine and an old tractor which had been in a pond for years.i stripped the old girl down and much to my supprise the gears were not rusty i think the fact that they were completely submerged in water no air got to them and saved them.i fitted a new clutch and rebuilt the tractor with parts i had lying around, when i sold the tractor if you set it up correctly it was impossible to turn it over compression without it starting, regards g cooper
