overall: Learn all your triads. get that patted down. then focus on chords changes instead of just playing scales or pentatonic. stop noodling when you practice :) I wish i was taught this early on
What I struggle with is basically I have all scales down all arpeggios down but when I'm moving from A to D let's say, am I using the scale of A to arrive at D and then the D scale to arrive at the next chord tone? or am I using the D scale to move to the D, having just come from an A chord tone??
@@StephenAndAshling What you should do is to play the SAME scale (in your case D major) focusing into different notes when chords change. For example: D major scale is (D-E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D). D chord and A chord (I and V grade of the scale are both major). So when D major chord is played you should outline his notes (D-F# or A) and when the change happens, into A major chord, you should outline A-C# and E. You can do what you said above (chord change, scale change) but it's a different topic, here it's just the same scale outlining different notes following the chord progression. Good luck!
I think applying chords into soloing is not only sounding amazing, but also serving the song, which I think most, if not, all solos should be doing. Awesome work!
I have learned a lot of skills and theory by playing with other musicians and being in bands, but most of what I appreciate and have learned about chords has come from this channel. Thank you Tyler!
Hi mr Larson I’ve been watching your videos for a couple months now and they’ve been really insightful as soon as I get a computer I plan on signing up for guitar super system hope you and your wife stay safe through quarantine.
That's me everytime that ad rolls, I've learned in few months from passionate UA-camrs what I'd probably learn in a year or more from a rigid paid instructor, glad your course is doing better than UA-cam ads, I hope it'll be the case for other UA-camrs. This will might push Google to change or at least rethink their ad system.
Lol Shots Fired! Guitar tricks isn’t bad for the users it’s targeting, beginners and newer players. I’m signed up for your courses and have used guitar tricks in the past. Each have their purpose. 🙏🤘
I’m a noob bass player that watches you and have actually implemented some of your techniques with techniques I learn from Bassbuzz. Don’t tell Davie, or else the Bass Counsel will have my head in the hall of Burton and Pastorious. But I don’t expect Davie to find me here
Tom Hillegas bruh I get nervous on here sometimes. Like all I can hear is Davie saying, “For your crimes against the Bass Nation and soliciting with the forbidden guitar jutsus; you have been sentenced to 1,000 slaps to the face, how do you plea?”
1:28 I remember seeing that ad and it really ticked me off because UA-cam guitar teachers like you were the first that came to mind next to rick graham as great UA-cam teachers. Those people need to do some research.. And download guitar super system🤘🏽😈
Mr. Larson, the MIW strap that you designed is hands down the best strap I have ever used. I have a $250 genuine leather strap and it dosent even compare. Thank you for presenting guitarists with this glorious creation. Thank you.
love it. you are one of the best guitar teacher. I have seen people learn guitar on youtube winning the over drive contest. It's depends on how we learn. like how we captured the rain while it is raining the same for everyone.
I try to do all of what you suggest in this lesson. The map/neck is much clearer. But I still have so far to go. Great stuff! Love to see you do more vid's on picking.
I think when I started learning the instrument for serious at the start of 2018, the one thing I had going for me was that I'd already spent enough time learning music and writing it to absolutely understand all this. What I found, which surprised me probably more than it should have, is that people won't care so much that you're still working on your technique if you know how to competently write, and (in my case), record/produce a decent song. For me there's no better encouragement to get better than to see the potential in what I'm already doing. So I'd encourage anyone who wants to just play music to pick up their instrument of choice and start by learning how to do this. It's the sort of thing that convinces you to keep going.
T, i’ve watched at least 50 or 60 of your videos in the past three months and this one blew my mind because I actually realized what you were saying and put it into practice! I’ve been playing for almost 30 years but I decided to go ahead and sign up for GSS because, I had to see what else I didn’t know!!! Ha🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
Tomo Fujita just show this on his UA-cam channel a few videos ago, but he got a little over my head. Thanks for breaking it down some more. The student doesn't fall far from the tree :)
I've been following this channel for a couple of years now. It helped me improve my improvisational skills, also music theory... I was always surprised how this channel always had 100-150k subscribers (I mean it deserved at least a million).. Now I see you've finally reached a million subs, congrats Tyler. You really deserved this.
Love this as usual, can you do a vid on how to do different types of harmonics, cause I can't tap harmonic and I haven't found any really detailed vids on it
OK, so, here is what happened. I paused the video at 1:48, I played all 3 positions couple of times till I learned where they are, I started doodling around them and just semi-random tones from around them which are from major scale (though I don't even remember the scales, I was just playing tones around those 3 positions and quickly remembered which "belong there" and which "don't". Then I added the root position once more, just raised an octave up. 10 minutes in I was running improv phrases over those 3/4 positions with wide smile on my face and then I remembered there are 10 more minutes of the video in front of me. Thank you for this!
What I did as a begainer to learn the fret numbers quicker was write the number of the fret on a $100 guitar and did that for 2 weeks and learned the fret numbers quick, now I can write the note name such as A# on my fret board 1 string at a time
So I've been working on my fretboard knowledge recently. I can name notes up and down the fretboard. I learned the major, minor and pentatonic scale shapes and I know about augmentation and diminution in intervals. Is it recommended that I memorize the shapes of the intervals or should I move on and apply that to construct triad chords/arpeggios like this video seems to suggest?
I've been playing guitar for 10 years and only took one music class. I enjoy learning random songs but I have the memory of a goldfish so over the past few years I've never improved and I forget pretty much every song I learn a week later. I used to be able to read sheet music and now it's very foreign to me.
I'm about to record my first song with my band (Pure Heart) we're beginners and i'm the lead guitar and this help me for a new solo, i just wanna say thanks.
You should do a video where you define and act out "Metal Shred God," "Blues King," and "Funk Master."
I strongly agree

This comment deserves to be top. Straight facts
Agreed. And a good way to start is maj and min blues.
Then work through the cycle of 5ths, or 4ths, to learn the next scale.
