If a child is to young they use shapes or colours or animals ect
I actually ended up taking my son to the eye doctor and they use this thing called "retinoscopy" where they put eyedrops in his eyes to keep his pupils relaxed and then shine a light through different lenses to determine his prescription. There's a video by Armstrong & Small Eyecare Centre that explains it.
When I was in kindergarten they had me check shapes (I could read but they still did)

Yes, near or farsightedness is permanent and can not be fixed unless you get lasik eye surgery to correct ur vision
