2025 MG HS Revealed - The SUV That Might Dethrone the RAV4!
Get ready for the all-new MG HS, set to debut in Australia this August after its grand unveiling at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 11 to 14. This next-generation mid-sized SUV promises to impress with a blend of style, performance, and innovation.
Although official images are yet to be released, approval documents reveal the MG HS will come in five exciting variants. Three will feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the other two will boast a more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with a nine-speed torque-converter automatic. This marks an upgrade from the outgoing model, which offered similar engine choices but with a less advanced six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Expect a plug-in hybrid version to join the lineup soon after the initial launch. The new MG HS is believed to be a slightly restyled version of the latest RX5 from Roewe, a fellow SAIC Motor brand. Patent filings from Europe show an MG-badged vehicle almost identical to the Roewe RX5, except for a different front fascia.
In China, the RX5’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine delivers 138 kilowatts of power and 300 newton-meters of torque, which is a significant boost over the current HS. This engine is paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. While the Chinese RX5 does not offer a 2.0-litre engine, such a powertrain is available in other SAIC Motor models, like the MG 7 sedan, which is also coming to Australia. The MG 7’s 2.0-litre engine generates an impressive 192 kilowatts and 405 newton-meters of torque.
The RX5 also features a plug-in hybrid option, combining a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 10-speed automatic transmission. This setup produces a total of 183 kilowatts and a substantial 570 newton-meters of torque, offering an electric driving range of 61 kilometers on the lenient NEDC cycle.
While pricing for the new MG HS is still under wraps, the current model starts at $29,990 before on-road costs, with the HS Plus EV priced from $49,690 drive-away. Despite its competitive pricing, the HS is currently the least popular model in MG’s Australian lineup, with sales down 63.1 percent compared to the same period last year.
