Even though Saber and Emiya are the most important characters in the narrative of Fate, Waver and Rider are the most important characters in F/Z. The story in F/Z is grim with tragedy and horrific acts but through all that Waver and Rider offer reprieve. Seeing scene after scene of other character murder and backstab each other can wear out on people becoming satiated of the violent and similar acts, but Wavers and Riders positive and enriching character interactions and moments offer a break from the other bleak moments. From there the audience can collect themselves and get a soft reset in the flow of the story, they break the tension in story and the moments when it happens in near perfect in the show.

Completely agree. And it adds to the ending tragedy all the same when the inevitable happens. From how much time they spent on those two from the get-go they knew just how big of a gold mine they landed with Rider/Waver.

Just finished Fate/Zero, and Waver and Rider are both my favourite duo and favourite characters. Their individual characters are interesting and their interactions are wholesome

Thematicaly rather than chronogicaly! I always prefer the first kind of video, since it help connect dots, while scene by scene analysis on the oposit tend to have a rythm to close to the series for someone who already watched it.

I like the episode format since it shows the pase at witch the screen writers tell the story they had crafted. Character arcs are also very interesting, but by going by episode you can also highlight how they made so many seperate character arcs intertwine it into an entertaining show.

I appreciate episode-by-episode videos a lot, especially since there are already approximately too many Fate character arc analysis videos on UA-cam IMHO. I hope you continue to do it like this.

The way you break down the cinematography and contrasts outs into words what I love so much about this show. Thank you for these and definitely keep going episode by episode so we get the shot analyses alongside the character discussions.

    Love the Fate/Zero videos!
For the question at the end: I think breaking everything down thematically would be the best way instead of per episode or per character, since it's better to explain one single theme from beginning to end rather than just touch on it here and there.

Really enjoying the perspective you provide on this. As far as how you should proceed I think that tackling each episode as it stands is a nice method, as it allows the viewer to follow along with both the progression of the story as well as the evolution of the themes each episode highlights. On the other hand videos centered around a specific theme do get the chance to go into more depth and therefore give us more to analyze and enjoy, but the drawback in my mind is that some of the elements might loose context...Per your Saber/Kiritsugu example: A video centered just on them would certainly be interesting, but might lack some of the greater context of the show....I hope that makes sense. Either way, I look forward to more on Fate!

    Great, as always.
A thematic episode would be a cool change of pace for this series. Especially with character arcs spread out across so many episodes, like Kerry and Saiba.
I say go for it. Switch back to episode-by-episode and thematic overviews as needed to keep things fresh

I think sticking to an episodic format for Fate/Zero would be extremely restrictive, even moreso than Hyouka. I'd say go for whatever process or structure you find the most interesting and engaging to talk about.

  • @gansmith

Fate/Zero has always been a great series to analyze. It's like The Godfather of anime drama.
As for the format, I think you should follow themes and character interactions since that is the real core of the anime and will keep the topics of the essay consistent.

I think a mix and match approach works best. The episodic breakdowns can function as a strong backbone or jumping point into topics that might not fit so well in an episodic format, while you can also tie those topics _back_ into the episodic breakdowns if appropriate.
Otherwise, these are the reasons why I want an episodic approach to be the "main" format:
    - Smaller details like shot types, sound design, etc. are easy to overlook and take for granted. In general, I think these details are continually worth celebrating due to how they can contribute (consciously or subconsciously) to someone's enjoyment and/or understanding of a series. But even moreso with Fate/Zero and its unique examples, some of which you have already highlighted from the first episode.
    - Though it will take longer, you would still cover a good chunk of the various thematic, character and battle related narratives throughout the anime. The step by step approach also draws attention to how it systematically builds these elements from the ground up and how they tie into one another. I think comparing and contrasting the Saber/Caster/Rider Master/Servant relationships in this video is a great example of this.
    - If you reach a good wrap up episode for an overarching topic you want to cover (concluding Caster and Ryuunosuke's narrative arc in episode 15, as a possible example?), you can always reference past videos related to the topic, and/or summarise the points you brought up in those videos. For those have been following the episodic breakdowns, this has the advantage of reinforcing a point in their minds (now with additional context), while also not alienating first time viewers who may have decided to jump in right then and there.

Funny fact is, they later homages this exact dynamic with Shinji and Rider in Fate/Extra Games as an homage to Zero and FSN. Cept this time Rider was a Pink Haired Francis Drake as a Woman and Shinji was closer to Waver then well Shinji

Thematically please. Hyouka was structured very differently so your approach there made much sense but Zero, while I wouldnt say fillery, has many episodes that dont amount to anything when looked upon individually, imho

Fate/Zero was the first Fate series that I actually watched. I did knew of Fate/Stay Night but I never dared watched it that time, so I didn't know the plot. I was actually rooting for Waver/Iskandar team the whole time until I knew that Kiritsugu is actually the MC of this anime, though I didn't regret my choice, but I grew to like Kiritsugu though with all that angst lmao

In hindsight the only thing I didn't like about faking assassin's death was that it didn't do much in the end. If I remembered correctly most of the characters figured out that this was just some sort of hoax, while the ones that didn't figure it out didn't suffer any major repercussions.

*Is the following interpretation correct? Please tell me.*
Kiritsugu is a hypocrite. He dislikes Saber because she _willingly accepted the painful path_ of a noble king to 'save the world', but he has done *exactly* the same by _willingly accepting the painful path_ of a utilitarian mercenary in order to 'save the world'. Apart from their opinions on 'cheating to win', they are exactly the same.

    • @LDub01031994
      @LDub01031994 4 роки тому +1

Ultimately I agree though Kiritsugu wouldn't see it in that way (kinda goes without saying lol). I think it goes back to their conversation about war where Saber tried to argue for some nobility in what one can learn from the battlefield and how fighting honorably is something one cannot take lightly. Kiritsugu rejects that saying war is nothing short of hell and there can never be honor found in such an activity. I think this relates to what you said because Saber's choice to be king is something she saw as a duty with a noble end she was pursuing but Kiritsugu would see it more as a selfish choice that guaranteed her own suffering and a lot of bloodshed. Kiritisugu would argue his choice is different retreating to his utilitarian argument that so long as he is saving more people than he is killing he is in the right, and he aims to be the ONE AND ONLY person to make that choice because once he gets the Holy Grail nobody else has to be the utilitarian mercenary that he was.
...but ultimately Angra Mainyu destroys his argument and crushes his hope that his utilitarian methods would be the last bits of suffering the world would need. I think in that moment we really see how deep the hypocrisy for Kiritsugu went as he couldn't make his wish knowing Angra Mainyu was going to "save the world" making the exact same utilitarian choices Kiritsugu had made up to that point. As the Grail said, it could only "save the world" only by a method Kiritsugu himself understood and utilized.
