My wife is Indian- Bengali and she too me to a book store called Dasgupta’s in this College Street area in Kolkata. I asked for a few books I recalled from my days at U Penn many moons ago, and astonishingly, the clerk didn’t even bat and eyelid, nonchalantly extricating the books from many large cabinets in the back room. I was stunned……spent only $70 for stuff that cost over $1000 during my time as a student. I also visited the Indian Coffee House - bad coffee but great sandwiches at dirt cheap prices (even by Indian standards). And holy smokes, the guy could recite the names of every US President in chronological order. Only in Kolkata, folks, only in Kolkata…..
Having studied till a bachelor's degree in India and a master's in US here is my take. In India people are good at memorizing as unlike in US, students are not given chit for formulas. A strong emphasis in India is to memorize the things, while in US it is to understand things. My friends memorized assembly code worth 100 lines which were all in HEX format. But if you ask them how that thing works, they won't know. In India, I had to memorize all physics and electronics formulas for the exams. If you forget them during exams, you are gone. In US, I was fairly impressed that professors hand out formula sheets during the exam as the point of engineering is about solving things from known data, rather than memorizing the formulas. I prefer the latter one more.
@@rohanbansal9563 It's also more logical, like my physics professors also say that the old system of question papers needs to go as when we will go on to do our doctorates and research,we will have every resource(as in data, books and the internet) available,so memorizing everything in bachelor's and master's without putting much emphasis on understanding becomes useless.
