Turkish Yatagan Sword from Damascus steel ~ Making my first Sword
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Hello, my name is Floris Postmes and I am a 17 year old knifemaker from the Netherlands.
This sword took me 1 month to make. All handforged using a flypress with the help of some friends, Jacob Drescher, Cos Noordman and Olivier Postmes. For the blade I used 15n20 and 1095 steel. Handle material is desert ironwood. Be sure to meet me at the Dutch Knife Exhibition in Tiel, 13 april.

Thanks for the huge amount of support on this video!
I know the handle isn’t tradtional, this is just my take on a yatagan. I know traditional ones have big ears.
Please suggest me what “historical” sword I should make next!
Historical weapon suggestions:
Roman gladius
Medival dagger
Katana
egyptian khopesh
Kukri
Chinese dao
You can make one of these weapons.
Are you going to sell it? Thanks for your art. I like it very much.

Congratulations bro. I'm not a sword expert but I think you've nailed it. It looks great. (GOT spoiler alert) Arya must sleep with you :D Maybe you can continue with Polish Karabela ;) Good luck! Greetings from Turkey :)

Great sword. My only trouble that with yatagan's handle. Turkish blacksmiths make the handles back end wider (Those are called ears) to prevent the blade to slip away from your hand in a combat situation. But it is so beautiful and seeing blacksmiths from other nations makinkg Turkish weapons is awesome. Good job.

It actually looks quite legit! GREAT WORK!
Your beautiful yatağan lacks 2 things, unless it is a ceremonial one:
1- “Blood channels”: 1 or 2 parallel canals running on the upper part of the blade, for easier drawing out of the metal wearing enemy.
2- MOST IMPORTANT: TWO EARS + COUNTERWEIGHTS! Since the saber is forward balanced; (ie: recurved) you have to leave the tang very thick (which you mostly did) and you finish the very end of handle with 2 large and heavy-ish “ears” that are inlaid with heavy bronze (or silver) sheating inside and around them to tilt the center of gravity backwards; very useful when hitting armor, as it will add a lot of momentum to the striking edge.
Another interesting feature is that you have the make the handle as “round” as possible (instead of oblong like a chef knife handle) so your fingers barely touch when grabbing the saber; a feature of our hammers as well.
Interesting to note; the hammer you are using is very similar to the ones in Turkey, Iran and Central Asia and China.
Last, you need to make a small notch at the back of the blade near the tang after each battle you have been in, the wider the notch, the more important the battle! Haha! :) (round notches on the back corners for naval battles)
Great work, I’m a copper and silversmith myself, I love your channel!
And another typical feature again for balancing and solidity reasons is to have multiple rivets at the handle; at least 3, sometimes 5.

The handle looks like a normal knife handle and traditional Yatağan swords have two big bulge at the back of the handle that are called 'ears' to prevent slipping from hand. Except from that, you made it better from most of the Turkish knife/sword makers. Excellent job!
You're playing Russian roulette. At 16:20, the drill is an inch from your hair. Next time might not be so lucky.
Anyway, great skill.
Dude in Turkey they forged yatagan with fists. he'll be fine...

I have had an 1830 Damascas steel yatagan since 1974 which is part of me. I really like this video :)
My Turkish family is from Yatağan village near Denizli, where the sword was invented. We still make a lot of swords and tools. Come by and visit us once :)
Hello from Denizli which is very near to yatagan town which is originally the place that these blades were made(still made infact). Some people have allready written the differences between the authentic ones so I wont mention it. I just wanted to say that you will be welcomed in Yatagan town if you choose Turkey as a holiday destination. Yatagan is in southwest of Turkey which means it's very near to the touristic regions of Turkey. Thanks for choosing Yatagan as your first sword to make Yatagan people appreciate that.
Bravo jeune homme, cette épée est magnifique! Une telle maîtrise à votre âge inspire le respect. Bonne continuation, amitiés du nord de la France.
Splendid work , original Yatagans handle is mostly made by goat or ram horn or deer antlers , also at the end of handle there are two " ears" for easier grip
Jheez didn’t expect the making of Valyrian steel to be so satisfying 😂
I honestly wish there was no music because it would be so much more satisfying to watch, anyways love your work as always :).
Love watching real hand forged steel

probably you did a better job than most of the local "manufacturers" calling them selfs authentic swordsmiths .. the knowledge of crafting such swords is probably long lost.

Brilliant job, I appreciate your enthusiasm. Compliments from Turkey.

just wow that pattern and beauty of handle,as a turkish sub and yatağan sword owner i really like it
You will shoot.
Yatağan's angle is for breaking the neck and waist part when going over the horse.

completes concave angle trimming.

Hi,
there are so many historical swords to smith!
Just check out the Book from Klingenmuseum Solingen.
Or go in the Museum itself!
Nice job 👍👍👍...very good quality because of a serious work...I recommend Turkish leather are also very good..
Congratulations on your 1st sword! Have fun at the show. 👍
The handle of the Yatağan sword is not like that. There is a lump to weigh on the bottom of the stem. that bump allows the sword to be kept balanced and the sword to swing more evenly. The part of the sword you made was also close to the handle. the bedding sword slightly thinner from the tip to the handle. Keep in your mind.

Hi Floris, perfect job! The pattern looks incredible! You should do a video from Tiel as well ;) best regards from Czech rep.
Dear Floris, you should visit Turkey, Denizli, district of Yatağan and meet with our few remaining original sword masters. They can't find an apprentice.
maybe you will be the one who carries this tradition into the future.
Floris , your instagram link on description is not working you should change it.
Outstanding craftsmanship
Very beautiful blade and the handle is as well!! You did a great job being your first one and at the age of 17!!!!

That Yatağan there is a fortune, you should auction it! Amazing job!
Your next project should be either Chinese sword "Dan dao" or Japanese Katana.
