PS - Save those cuttings. Grapevine has 100 uses in the garden. It's tough and somewhat bendable. You could make a few mini trellises for support, pack them in a Hugelkultur-filled raised bed, use to block paths, so many things. . . When I was a kid, a man at the river made spectacular grapevine baskets. His were works of art.
I would definitely be interested in more pruning videos about other kinds of vines and fruit trees and bushes. Pruning is an art and it is very scary. I know i have to cut back a lot but am not always sure about the best parts to keep and what is actually hindering the growth and productivity of the plant. I loved the way you took us step by step explaining the why of each action. Brilliant. Please do more. 💜 ❤️
Great video! You turned what looked like an unmanageable tangled mess into something neat and tidy that feels totally manageable; I can’t wait to see how this grape grows this season!
Great video as per usual Jacques! I'd also love to see more grape care videos! I'm planting my first one this year. Thanks for all of the great content!
This is a great video! More often than not, I am behind the power curve when it comes to pruning so I really appreciate the videos that show how to prune an overgrown or seemingly messy plant. Your simple step by step demonstration with the 10-15 nodes is very easy to follow and remember. Now I need to find a video to help me identify my primocanes and floricanes on the blackberry vines I didn't remove in the fall! Keep up the great work. You are appreciated!
Love homegrown grapes, used to get them fresh and warm from my grandpa's garden. I have a large arbor that had a dead bougainvillea when I bought my home. It has been my plan to use it for grapes.
You are so easy to listen to. This was the best video on pruning. I have several grape vines that didn't get pruned well when they were first planted and Now I can get out there and tackle them before Spring gets in full swing. Thank you so much!
I planted what I thought were seedless grapes, one concord and one muscadine. Turns out both are seeded, but c'est la vie! Grew a nice trunk and trained the canes adequately. The third year grapes were outstanding. Nice harvest and superb flavor. I seeded a bunch and made jam, and they were great table grapes too. I can always learn more, so please keep sharing with us. Good luck!
If your grape vines grew well over the year you might get grapes but if not you will get grapes next year , depends on when you planted your vine , ie late summer or early spring or during winter etc that can effect also when your going to get grapes.
This was an incredibly helpful video. I have 2 grape vines that are just as out of control as yours was before you pruned it. Seeing how you did that gave me some great ideas on how to prune mine. Thank you!
I used to make charcoal sticks with dried out wind grape vines...what wasn't usable for art went into my gardens. ( did the burning and smoldering on the garden in early spring or late fall) that was in the early 70s ..my soil became super productive after.
Lots of great info! You really do want to take a lot of the grapes. I work at a small local winery (making the wine and taking care of the vinyard) and your spot on with all your info! It's very similar to what we're currently doing with our wine grapes. We have two trunks coming up and spitting into about two feet or so and we cut back until there's only 5 spurrs per side for a total of 10 per plant. And we cut back to only two buds per spur. We are not very precise and really don't baby our plants (many are 30+ years old however) we have many that we cut down with the intention of killing and replacing, and every year they get hard core sprayed with chemicals and they always come back. So don't worry toooo terribly much, they are resilient little buggers! We don't grow them on a fence like you do. We grow them on a single wire about hip level. And then have the cordons very close together, many touching and then going to canes along the wire, and then we try to get the 5 or so spurrs.
I love driving by wineries and seeing all the pruned grapes this time of year, they look so neat, organized, and sort of unnatural in a cool way haha. I am glad my explanation was accurate enough!
I'm a new grape grower, hopefully I prune my 3 right cause I had them now 3 years & gotten no grapes. If you have a dimo on basic grape plant care would be awsome. One of them is a vine grape I saved.
@Jacques in the Garden they do, all my crops do. They're just confusing me 😕. I'm wondering if the Achemon Sphinx Moth infestation I had last year had anything to do with it?
On timing: The sap starts to flow in grapes well before they leaf out. I intend to work mine on whatever I think is the coldest day of the year. In Florida this year I waited until February and my vines bled sap for two weeks.
Thank you I needed this video!!!! Please more info on growing grapes! I don’t know what I’m doing with my very messy and unkempt grapes planted by the previous owners of my house.
Nice video Jacque, I’m inspired to train my California wild grape. I also enjoy seeing your tree kale. I have one purple tree collard just staring out in my garden and I am hoping to get a start of the green tree collard the volunteered in my son’s yard in Oakland. I would love to see some videos about tree collards or kale from you😊
I got quotes to build a structure for two grapevines to spread. $750 and $350, which would make them the most expensive grapes ever eaten. Built the structures myself with t-bars and 9-gauge wire. Not pretty, but functional and about $50 total. It hurts to cut them back so much, but they bounce back beautifully.
I just planted Catawba Red Grapes last month. I need ideas on a trellis, it's already got leaves on it. I used kelp and lime for fertilizer when planting it in the ground. Thanks for this video!
This was my first proper pruning of this plant, its only been in this particular spot for a year so now I am going to try and actually prune it properly every year, and I will be sure to document it!
This is exactly the video I needed to see for my table grape vineyard. I've got a few unruly, young plants that aren't really suited for classic, aesthetically pleasing cane or spur pruning. This video is a year old, but I can't see another video on how it turned out last fall. Do you have that, or an update on how it went?
I would normally leave something to die back when pruning big branches(atleast when youre working on a bonsai tree) if you dont you could kill it. And maybe put something on a big wound (cant remember the name of the stuff) it helps keeping it alive
Yes, I want more content on grape care. I'm growing mine in big pots: a himrod, a white seedless Thompson and a red seeded native to California variety(forgot name). I suspect I'm not fertilizing them properly. May not be pruning them well and may not be keeping the birds away well enough. Need help
Excellent video and information thank. I live near a ton of old pine trees so the wasps make it impossible to get to my grapes. I thought you had to cut 2 inches away from a main trunk for die back?
So I am growing grapes next to my deck so that they can grow up and over. I'm trying to follow some of this like 2 canes etc but my grapes have to grow like 15ft to cover everything. I think it will work since instead of letting them go sideways I'm just going up and then I planted 5 plants next to each other for the horizontal coverage. We will see how it goes
I have 5yr old grapes in 20 gal pots. Built an arbor 2 yrs ago n tied vines 2 it. Never pruned n never got any grapes. Yes more vids on grapes. Is pruning 4 an arbor 4 shade different?
I was devastated, like 15 years ago, when the grape I planted a year earlier was buried, smashed, and shredded by a contractor. The next year showed me that you can absolutely massacre grape vines to shape them as you like. If you don't they'll tear your house apart.
I bought two grape last year, one survive the other one I didn't water it enough I think,,I also don't have a trellis I really don't know what am doing, more on Grape will surely be appreciated
I just purchased/received 2 vines - am excited to get them in the ground. Question - do you have issues with your dogs getting to the grapes? Looking forward to additional grape care vids. Thank you!
Now that it is on and behind the fence they can't easily reach much without properly trying. Last year they didn't seem interested so that was good to see!
Thanks for doing this. It seems like there has been advice about pruning grapes from Biblical times, but in all honesty I think most growers are still a bit confused about it. 🤔🍇
Planted 3 Catawbas in the fall that I got half price! I made an wire trellis for them, and now they are just barely starting to bud, and I have no idea how to handle them! More grape videos please!
Grape pruning does seem to be VERY personal to some people and cultures. The cool thing about grapes is that they seem to want to grow no matter what so everything we do is just to make life easier for us
It’s soooo painful. I pruned mine for the first time this season and I did not enjoy removing all that growth! 😢 just hoping my painstaking efforts pay off this summer 😋
I bought a grape vine from an unreliable source. This is one of the first things I planted when I got a backyard. I’m not sure of the type they are but the leaves got these awful bumps underneath - which I discovered in research that are caused by a pest. These pests go underground during winter and come back. The vines had grown for a few years so it’s very difficult to completely remove the stump. (Maybe your pups can give me a hand…😂). I chop them down as far as I can but they still try to come back. I think I read that it’s the type of grape I planted that is not resistant to this pest.
@@jacquesinthegarden I gave up on them for a while. They need a lot of space and that sunny garden space is precious. Sad part is I like to make stuffed grape leaves.
What if my vine has already broke dormancy? Can I still prune it? It’s full of leaves and quite unruly! Didn’t know I needed to be that aggressive with the prune. I would also like to see more home garden grape vine care. Thank you.
Great video! Question, is it ok for the two crossing branches to be touching? I understand why you kept them that way. What is the actual issue when plants have crossing and touching branches?
Would be amazing if you could add the sources you used to learn about growing grapes? Okay, Imma be demanding and ask for sources on everything to up my learning
I have 2 grape plants that I bought last year still in their pots. One is a Flame and the other a Thompson. I was planning on building an arbor but now that I saw your trellis I’m worried that an arbor might not be suitable. What do you think? How substantial or big of a trellis will I need to support 2 plants? Also, thanks for the great info on trimming vines back!
Just got 3 grape varieties sadly cant prune them this year to give them a nicer start as well, they just started up a week before i went and got them they also dont start their leaves here until mid may so atleast ill have plenty of time next year
Ok so the two canes that you left on each plant, each with 10-15 nodes will be second year canes next year. Then what do you cut. That is where my confusion comes in. Can't find a video that speaks to future cuts after what you have shown. Thanks!!
whats your total node/spur count at the end? 4 canes with 10 nodes per cane, for a total of 40? A lot of the info online is for wine grapes vs table grapes, not sure if total node amount differs between the two, variety, growing conditions, etc, etc
Question: How old should the grapes be before you prune? I have one that's 3 yrs this year. Last year it didn't get anything cos I neglected it due to moving, but I planted it last year and it grew. Just no fruit
How do you keep your dogs from eating the grapes? I’m afraid to get a grape vine because I’m scared my dogs will eat them and get sick and possibly die.
Do you do anything to amend the soil to start the new season? well and I’m growing grapes in really large pots so I’m not sure if I should amend the soil I know I need to fertilize, but how do I refresh the soil?
In a container you probably have some settling happening every year. Come spring I like to come by and top them with compost and maybe a little mulch and that is about it.
For those that don,t know you get grapes off of one year old canes not older canes like the canes that where pruned in this video , canes that would grow off these older canes I doubt would grow gapes this year but the buds of those canes will produce canes and grapes the next year as I understand it.
Would love to see more grape care. Just planted 2 last year and built an arbor.
I have an arbor ( looks like #7 to sit under 4 grape vines. How do i prune these? 5 yrs old in 20 gal pots. 10 zone ca below la.
I will make a care guide throughout this season!
I would really like to know the best fertilizer and fertilizing routine. Thanks so much! Happy gardening and have a great day!!
PS - Save those cuttings. Grapevine has 100 uses in the garden. It's tough and somewhat bendable. Thanks! I pruned mine today (I live in New Zealand so opposite seasons) and will keep them now 😊
Yes, please continue to show us as you care for your grape vine. This was a very good video! Thanks so much.

Excellent video! Thanks for the helpful tips! 👍
My 4yo really enjoyed the counting 😂
The grape plant looks really good pruned up for the season. Enjoy !
Haha I was able to sneak in a little pre-k education!
Exactly what I needed and when I needed it!!! Please share the progress this season. Thank you
Immediate like for the "grape reset". A much better "reset" on every imaginable level than the WEF's.
What are WEFs?
Great video as per usual Jacques! I'd also love to see more grape care videos! I'm planting my first one this year. Thanks for all of the great content!

Fungal ones are the worst, I will cover everything good and bad!

I started concord grapes last year, I'm so glad for this video. Do you prune like this every spring?

Thanks for sharing your process, Jacques. Yes please on more videos on grape care. Also, what variety of table grape is this? Thanks
I thought he said red flameless
Flame Seedless!
Hi Jacque! Was wondering when the follow up to this video would be coming?
Nice Job Jacques !
I would love to have grapes and make homemade jam. Farm to table in my back yard!
My grapes are very compact and I think I'll take back the shaggy stuff.
I would normally leave something to die back when pruning big branches(atleast when youre working on a bonsai tree) if you dont you could kill it. And maybe put something on a big wound (cant remember the name of the stuff) it helps keeping it alive

Omg the thumbnail “grape reset” hahaaaaaaaaa Jacques knows what’s up 🤣 #growyourgroceries
I need to do that to my grape, It a mess😊
Can you grow grapes in containers? Thank you so much for this video. Love watching your channel.

I have a very old neglected grapevine that's part of the house I rent. I'm doing my best, but its a lot!

I’ve always been taught to take my grapes down to 5 buds. Curious what the difference is? Will need to try it with one of my grapes and compare.
It seems to depend on the type of grape and style of pruning, It seems that with this variety people like to leave a few extra on
How many grapes do the birds take compared to what they leave you?
How do you keep your dogs from eating the grapes? I’m afraid to get a grape vine because I’m scared my dogs will eat them and get sick and possibly die.

In a container you probably have some settling happening every year. Come spring I like to come by and top them with compost and maybe a little mulch and that is about it.
hey chonkay prune all your grapes
I made two bottles of wine from our table grapes and forgot to degas it before bottling which resulted in sparkling red wine 😂
Your canes remind me of a uterus with fallopian tubes 😂
