Hiding the dowels behind the drawer slides and using one of the factory holes as access is pure genius.
I try to always put in a hidden compartment when I am building someone custom furniture. Such an added value for the customer and a stupendous referral generator.
Greg My grandfather also always put a secret compartment in every piece of furniture he built. I loved it
I love spending time in my shop. Also I am a hand gun owner and a grandparent - so this gives me a place to store my gun and keep my grand kids safe.
Always a good idea to share the whereabouts of your secret compartment on youtube.
Nice build
The UA-cam memory is very short, though :)
decoy
UA-cam memory is very short about what???? :-)
Willem Kossen just showing how to do it. I'm sure he's much smarter than that
I love the idea of sharing a "secret" drawer with 115,000 subscribers!
I really like this concept for storing tools. Great job!
I like those projects, they are pretty practical, thanks for sharing
Great work on that secret compartment. I especially liked the clever locking idea. Very entertaining stuff.
Thanks :)
Absolute genius john. Thank you for the knowledge.
Very clever locking setup. Thanks for the videos.
Thumbs up! Lets's see more things with secret compartments.
I think I would of used an extra hole in the slide as you did but hide the lock in plain site by using another screw long enough to go into the secret compartment. Not as elaborate and probably not as good of a video but practical and quick. That's why I'm on this side of the screen and you're the one making while I'm watching.
HI, from COLOMBIA, cool idea & Congratulations for your RUSH 2112 T-SHIRT.
Your new friend JAKE
nice build John. I especially love the secret compartment. it's always nice to know you can have a little secret space.
Well done, that latch is ingenious!
great project and very clever. thanks for sharing
Just love the secret panel, which is not secret anymore, lol. Great ideas, and thank you.
Love the secret compartment idea.
He does some real neat original stuff this guy.
It worked. Secret compartment got me!
I like the idea on the lock.. simple but works well.
What an idea! Amusing! Regards from Germany.
Great ideas, thanks for sharing 👍🏼😊
Wow your super creative, thank you for the video.
Thanks!!! New follower, but can't stop watching you work. Now I must go work in my shop thanks to you! :)
I like your woodworking pure genius iam always seeing skills you have.
That's pretty slick :) Thanks for sharing it!
Toujours de très bonnes idées...merci du partage :)
Superb man thank you for the share and awesome idea.
you really are a genius! Love your mind
I came for the secret compartment! Looks great, watched a couple of more vids aswell. I might've done the locking mechanism a bit different, but thats just my idea.
Very nice!! Really love the lock on the hidden shelf. Well played Sir! :-)
I can't wait to see that secret compartment as a plot element on a TV crime show!
Great video, very clever idea. thx.
Love the latch system
Great video John. You reminded me of Carol Merrill when you were showing off all of the new room on your tool wall!!
I had a similar idea for the latch mechanism that wouldn't require an additional pin to open the compartment.
Put screws in the holes you dowelled, but one screw would be put in a dowel. The dowel would need to be fully removed to open the compartment, but it could be opened by simply pouring it out by the screw head with your fingernail. For additional security you could have a small magnet on the inside end of the dowel that would hold against the non-moving screw.
You'll never get all your $1000 bills into that wee drawer. I loved the drawer, it's really tidy work. Big things here tomorrow night... my mates are coming to move the machinery into the extension for me. They are engineers and mechanics so everything will be bang-on square when they leave. I am really excited.
There's a REAL shortage of $1000 bills here Brendan :)
Good luck with the move, it must be great to have that extra space.
#youtubemoney :)
Extra space? I'm got the 2 lathes moved last night when my mates came here and, today, I am moving small stuff but I seem to be losing space as I go, LOL.
Thank you for thie idea !
It is good to advise people to always use the table to the same height to the wood you are cutting. I myself needed that hint too thank you
Just an awesome little trick to add to a practical drawer system. ;}
Smart idea!
I keep all my important documents in my shop too haha you were cracking me up
Oh yes, Very well done John!
Hey, your shop is really coming together. Wishing you and your channel continued success in 2017.
Damn Good Job John.
Very nice!
That hidden compartment is a brilliant idea. Enjoyed seeing you work it out.
'Spare cash' hahahah 😂
The wall is looking good. Wondering what's next. Could still spring load the dowel and use a magnet to release the latch easily. But I'm sure you've considered that. Thanks for the knowledge.
congratulations you are a genius
Ingenious (as usual)
can you make a video were you go over all the features of the station?
your videos are the best i am subscribed to 50+ youtube channels (and all of yours) and you are always the first ones i click on
also, great project
cool, i like it 👍
Interesting!
Pretty sneaky but pretty neat also!
Just super! How good are You equipped workshop.
Very cool!!! I'm racking my brain trying to figure out where I can put hidden compartments in my shop. And racking my brain further for what I'll put in them...haha
Genius!
14:25 keeping secret files where you keep metal files? Clever! you could even say "thats where I keep my files" and NOBODY SUSPECTS A THING! xD
I just had to watch this video because of the SECRET COMPARTMENT. My thought was that perhaps it could actually also be a FANCY secret compartment :) .
is it really a secret compartment when everybody knows about it now? great project. I want to do this in my shop one day
Cool 😎
I'm loving all the organization. But my question would be. What kind of tools would you prefer/dedicate to a "tool wall"?
Your miter saw blade is like a mirror!
I appreciate A LOT this piece of THE TRUTH about building things - there are ALWAYS those moments of simple neglection (13:28)..... followed by just so adorable faith in f*ckin' magic (13:32)..... aaaand shortly after - those doses of pure realism (13:35) :)))). Glad you have not edited that out from the clip.
And of course thanks for sharing great craftsmanship and genious simplicity of the locking mechanism.
Well done! Did you use nails only to attach the front panel to the vertical panel?
Regarding blade heights, use a riving knife with a guard in case you are concerned about security. Always run you saw blades with as much clearance above your work piece as possible since they then will run cooler and last much longer!
Eric Herlitz Clearance above work piece, cooler, last longer, please explain. I'm having trouble understanding what you mean. Thanks.
John - What are the dimensions of your shop? I love all the videos. I am currently obsessed with work working. I am wrapping up a rebuild of an old table saw, similar to yours. Building your wooden fence, next (bought the plans).
Are all miter saw the same when it comes to width and height they can cut through? If we were to use a diameter as a sample cut what would be the largest dimension we could cut?
I like how you used double sided storage to make the best use of space in the cabinet! BUT (there's always a but) putting your clamps up there might end up making for empty space knowing how you "always" put your tools away (yea right) - haha.
Celine Dion and Monopoly money were great choices to put in the secret compartment. Now if you forget where the secret compartment is and how to open it (like me) they will forever be safe!
secret compartments aren't secret when you show the world where they are. lol I'm messing around. good build
Put a loose nail from both sides. A magnet will be great. Welll done.
Very nice man, I'm curious about those wooden clamps you hung up. Where are they lol
Sweet hiding spot!
will that construction adhesive glue painted wood surfaces together
Good
Just subscribed! Hope you'll do a clothes cabinet :)
Ohhhh!! a secrete compartment! :-0
How do you like that Hitachi chop saw? What were your reasons for getting it? (I am asking because I use that exact model at work and it just feels awful)

I noticed on your projects you use construction adhesive rather than wood glue...why is this?
it's too cold in the shop for the glue to dry
It's too Cold for Glue
I watched this video twice because it had a secret compartment in it.
Very nicely done!
@ 13:06 ,why did you not glue the vertical center pc?
Do you think you can put a spring between the right drawer piece and the dowel? So you dont need to use a pin on the other side? An then maybe drive a screw into the left side of the dowel, and open it by pushing that?
Could, but then need to find a spring the right size and spend extra time fine tuning to make sure it actually pushes the dowel. And sometime down the road it may stop working. Better to keep it simple.
The cabinets are really cool but what if you put your logo on them or something to spice it up?
How about using one of those magnetic “baby proof” latches as an invisible lock? Those are very subtle.
love the grain on yer big cabinet . fur suure lol
12:04 Live long and prosper
Was wondering when someone would notice that :)
Mind melding with the cabinet to locate the secret compartment. :)
what kind of glue do you use?
A simpler option would be to make the two front screws in the drawer slide longer so they bite into the inner box. Loosen them both and it drops down.
Yay clickbait!! Once again great video John.
So, now it is a filing cabinet.
Child safety magnet door lock. The ones you another magnet like a key.
Now we are all on the edge of our seat wanting to know what goes in the secret box? What's in the box? What's in the box?!
You could hide your extensive collection of the Ray Conniff Singers in that secret compartment!
Already home to my cherished Celine Dion discography :)
+I Buid It Next: the even more secret Barry Manilow compartment behind the mitre saw!
I think you should use that secret compartment as a swear jar. You'll probably save a lot of money very quickly. lol
You definitely don't want this secret drawer to open with guests in the shop... but showing it on UA-cam is fine ;)
How about using a metal rod and a magnet to pull the rod out instead of the dowel and nail solution?
0:47 Damn it! I've been found out. :p
What's in the box???
12:03 live long and prosper 😀
