Fun is objective. Normally people who grew up during Aris time see 3S as a cult classic. Not saying it's good or bad, it's purely objective. SFIV people will called that game the best for example.
I understand some of the complaints levied at 3S, there's truth to it, but it doesn't matter because the game is just extremely fun. It's so fast and there's never been another SF game with so much freedom in your choices and how you move. The system mechanics (parry) just open up the possibilities in the game in so many interactions and you hardly ever get that kind of experience in any other fighting game, that's why you'll always see this game played because of how unique it is not just in the SF world but fighting games as a whole no matter how many new fighting games come up. It's not balanced but like Aris said the open endedness of the game allows you to always have an answer even if you are at a disadvantage, whereas an S+ character in another SF game it's straight up unwinnable because of how limited you are. That's also what many players like Daigo dislike about it what parry can do in those oki situations, and the freedom of the system mechanics allows questionable OSs, but that's what makes 3S unique and special and free, if you take that away it would just be a boring SF game #1000. At least the developers had the balls to make a change and really open up the game, there's tons of other "traditional" SFs you can play but you won't get another experience in other fighting game like 3S.
People need to stop pretending parry is the magical bandaid that enables the fun in 3S when it's really the cause of a lot of imbalance. Parry favors characters with good punishes, which is why bad characters like Oro, Hugo, and Q can pop off while losers like Remy, 12, and Sean are lucky if they get more than just a throw. But at the end of the day all these guys are going to lose more often than not to the characters with god normals and even more cheap bullshit up their sleeves.
a 4th version with a few small balance changes and a playable gill would be so cool. They could do us a solid and add the stages from the previous versions too

I don't think this tournament is a good example, this tournament placed restrictions on character choices by limiting how many of any character you could have on your team. This tournament is more of a fun get together nothing is on the line so of course you will see character variety. Also I'm pretty sure some of the choices are counter picks to other top tier characters. This is a also a team tournament where you only need to beat someone in one game to advance, giving the person no opportunity to adapt. So picking less used characters is encouraged because you can steal games with a knowledge check.
the result is always the same. Chun/Yun. You can structure a tournament any way you want, but as long as those two characters exist, this is what the final will always be. This is why 3S wasn't a mainstay during major tournaments. It's a Chun/Yun show every time.
I dont understand why Aris is downplaying Tekkens systems. I think that game more than exemplifies the idea of player skill with the game and mechanics over simply character balance. The generic options everyone has is a system in itself when a character has 100 unique attacks. This is after he just finished justifying how many miracles you need to best a true Mexican Akumer.

those tournaments are FT2/FT3, coop in FT1 and anything can happen in one game when you just fought an opponent for the first time and have very little info on them. Broken is sort of relative, you can say that someone like Denjin Ryu is extremely broken because of how he can rob you, put that in any other game and he'd be broken but he's like uppermid or high tier at best in 3S.

This game is a lot like +R. +R wears its influence on its sleeve. Every character broken, but everyone can win based on the system. Parry and SB are basically the same thing.
There's still a lot of limitations in the system mechanics, although they definitely at least tried to make it more "loose" vs SF5. 3S is so loose in it's mechanics it's like you are walking on clouds sometimes.

I think the magic stopped with 3s because it was the last true arcade game for Capcom. Yes, Japan still has arcades and SF4 was released first in the arcade, but they were already dead across the world outside of maybe Japan and Korea. I remember 3's, MVSC2, X-men vs Street Fighter, and Soul Calibur 2 at the arcades and even grocery stores had these cabinets. So these games had an insane amount of people playing them all the time finding new tech. It captured the true essence of fighting games. Now we have some A.I created soulless fighting games like SF5 that just feels dead. There's no charm to it. The "arcades" are now virtually created inside SF6 that's only accessible online.
problem is, 3rd Strike really only has two cheap characters. Yeah, the game is busted, but only Chun and Yun are really OP. The one thing after them is Akuma tatsu, that's it. The high tiers are so far above everyone else it's gross. Urien, with his unblockables, still mid tier. MK9 is the prime example of everyone being broken. What did the grand finals always look like? Kabal/Cyrax. The statement of everyone being cheap so no one is, it's false.
Another game to add to your list: Virtua Fighter 5. I call it open vs closed system. Hence why 3rd strike will always stand the test of time. Pretty sure max talked about this too. Here’s hoping sf6 gets added to the list. It’s interesting how setplay was a thing in 3rd strike but didn’t ruin the experience because of the parry system.
I think he called it the most loose closed fighting game lol, which is kinda accurate. The developers of VF tightly knit what you can and can't do, but there's so much you can do in that space that it allows of a lot of player expression and possibilities. When you lose, you get triggered because there wasn’t a lot you could have done besides not let that situation happen. Versus losing and being like “damn, I should have done .” With parries, you always feel powerful, even on defense. With an open system, you can even have more character variety because no one particular archetype is too OP.

True. The parry and guard push in Soul Calibur 2 is such a broken system that if you're against someone spamming attacks, you can use your knowledge and parry that shit to oblivion. I've seen people parry each other over and over again until time expired.

It is specifically the parry mechanic. But the thing is, this parry is so different to every other game's parry mechanic in that it doesnt allow the enemy to be predictable at ALL. In games like sf4 there are literally block combos to build meter. In this game, if you try to do the same sequence of inputs again, a good player will fucking destroy you for it

God damn, Aris really reveals himself to be a massive FG boomer whenever he talks about 3S. 3S is a HORRIBLY balanced. The only reason so many characters are played is because the game has been out for 200 years and oldhead boomers are naturally going to gravitate towards their niche picks over the years of Ken/Chun/Yun/boredom and stick with them, and because of parries. Parries help level the playing field because they're the strongest mechanic in the game. Nothing else really matters if you can parry reasonably well and know your character somewhat well. A huge % of their commonly used applications are pretty easy to get down if you actually spend time with the game. And even with them, the game is terribly balanced. No one would ever say "Remy or Twelve are actually just fine!" if parries weren't extremely, overbearingly strong compared to everything else. Even with parries helping even the odds, Chun/Yun are 100000% massively, objectively better than low tiers. I love 3S and it is indeed a shitload of fun. But parries are too strong of a mechanic and there's a reason they'll never come back. A lot of people love to coom over the "theoretical infinite skill ceiling" but parries aren't a good mechanic unless you genuinely want the game to be all about parries. Don't listen to FG boomers.

Cvs2 is not balanced, like at all. Roll cancelling, while you can argue gives even low-tiers new tools to work with also makes already strong chars stronger, blanka sagat iori for example. Id argue alpha 3 is more balanced, but V-ism kills X-ism so hard that char variety within X just dies.
A lot of people don't understand what when "everybody's cheap, nobody's cheap" means but Aris explained it pretty well. It's a lot more about the system mechanics being cheap than the characters themselves. This is why DNF fell off while HnK is still seeing play like 100 years later even though HnK is way more broken.
The "parries help level the playing field" thing is true to an extent, but 3S isn't a good example of "everybody's cheap" even considering parries. Chun is fucking cheap, Yun is fucking cheap, Ken is absurdly well-rounded and approaching cheap, you could make arguments for Akuma, even Denjin Ryu, but Alex, Q, Sean, Remy, Twelve... they are not cheap in any sense of the word.

The systems are strong enough to carry players and there is a little bit of sauce from Sean and Remy even if it is context sensitive and not free neutral options like what Yun or Chun Li have.

Nothing can take away the impact third strike has had on the FGC as a whole. It’s a all time classic. But I don’t think the parry is perfect. I think it can be both great to use, and see spectators wise but abit too much to deal with defensively. Requiring a ton of practice and execution on the entire cast. It’s a daunting game, even more than tekken imo but man it’s sick lol. I wouldn’t agree with aris that there hasn’t been a street fighter that’s been enjoyable since 3S, 5 was good but it had some annoying characters and some characters dominated the game, and annoying elements like crush counter with priority system. Just felt stupid lol but was fun for awhile in season 1 and 2 for me. SF4 was also pretty good, and a solid street fighter through its life, yes there were os’s and wakeups you had to deal with that allowed some players to steamroll you if didn’t know how to deal with it, but learning how to deal with any specific Situation is apart of any fighting game. I feel it’s abit disingenuous to say there hasn’t been a fun sf since 3S while in the same breath say SF4 was fun to watch lol. I feel Aris has funny opinions sometimes. SF6 i feel is heading in the right direction, but hope it shapes up well

There's still a lot of limitations in the system mechanics, although they definitely at least tried to make it more "loose" vs SF5. 3S is so loose in it's mechanics it's like you are walking on clouds sometimes.

I think the magic stopped with 3s because it was the last true arcade game for Capcom. Yes, Japan still has arcades and SF4 was released first in the arcade, but they were already dead across the world outside of maybe Japan and Korea. I remember 3's, MVSC2, X-men vs Street Fighter, and Soul Calibur 2 at the arcades and even grocery stores had these cabinets. So these games had an insane amount of people playing them all the time finding new tech. It captured the true essence of fighting games. Now we have some A.I created soulless fighting games like SF5 that just feels dead. There's no charm to it. The "arcades" are now virtually created inside SF6 that's only accessible online.
problem is, 3rd Strike really only has two cheap characters. Yeah, the game is busted, but only Chun and Yun are really OP. The one thing after them is Akuma tatsu, that's it. The high tiers are so far above everyone else it's gross. Urien, with his unblockables, still mid tier.

Another game to add to your list: Virtua Fighter 5. I call it open vs closed system. Hence why 3rd strike will always stand the test of time. Pretty sure max talked about this too. Here’s hoping sf6 gets added to the list. It’s interesting how setplay was a thing in 3rd strike but didn’t ruin the experience because of the parry system.

The developers of VF tightly knit what you can and can't do, but there's so much you can do in that space that it allows of a lot of player expression and possibilities. When you lose, you get triggered because there wasn’t a lot you could have done besides not let that situation happen. Versus losing and being like “damn, I should have done .” With parries, you always feel powerful, even on defense. With an open system, you can even have more character variety because no one particular archetype is too OP.

Would be interested to read from someone what exactly the 'game system' Aris keeps referring to that is implicit to Third Strike's balance despite the balance issues that are there. Is it specifically the implementation of 3s' parry mechanic? Is it some sort of nuance to push back on a per character basis (I recall that Soul Caliber 2 had an interesting push back system).
It is specifically the parry mechanic. But the thing is, this parry is so different to every other game's parry mechanic in that it doesnt allow the enemy to be predictable at ALL. In games like sf4 there are literally block combos to build meter. In this game, if you try to do the same sequence of inputs again, a good player will fucking destroy you for it

God damn, Aris really reveals himself to be a massive FG boomer whenever he talks about 3S.
3S is a HORRIBLY balanced. The only reason so many characters are played is because the game has been out for 200 years and oldhead boomers are naturally going to gravitate towards their niche picks over the years of Ken/Chun/Yun/boredom and stick with them, and because of parries.
Parries help level the playing field because they're the strongest mechanic in the game. Nothing else really matters if you can parry reasonably well and know your character somewhat well. A huge % of their commonly used applications are pretty easy to get down if you actually spend time with the game. And even with them, the game is terribly balanced.
No one would ever say "Remy or Twelve are actually just fine!" if parries weren't extremely, overbearingly strong compared to everything else. Even with parries helping even the odds, Chun/Yun are 100000% massively, objectively better than low tiers.
I love 3S and it is indeed a shitload of fun. But parries are too strong of a mechanic and there's a reason they'll never come back. A lot of people love to coom over the "theoretical infinite skill ceiling" but parries aren't a good mechanic unless you genuinely want the game to be all about parries. Don't listen to FG boomers.

Cvs2 is not balanced, like at all. Roll cancelling, while you can argue gives even low-tiers new tools to work with also makes already strong chars stronger, blanka sagat iori for example. Id argue alpha 3 is more balanced, but V-ism kills X-ism so hard that char variety within X just dies.

A lot of people don't understand what when "everybody's cheap, nobody's cheap" means but Aris explained it pretty well. It's a lot more about the system mechanics being cheap than the characters themselves.
This is why DNF fell off while HnK is still seeing play like 100 years later even though HnK is way more broken.
The "parries help level the playing field" thing is true to an extent, but 3S isn't a good example of "everybody's cheap" even considering parries. Chun is fucking cheap, Yun is fucking cheap, Ken is absurdly well-rounded and approaching cheap, you could make arguments for Akuma, even Denjin Ryu, but Alex, Q, Sean, Remy, Twelve... they are not cheap in any sense of the word.
@@sc065 Sure you meant to say Q not G, but I think part of it comes from how the more popular "cheap" characters have generally been labbed against for decades while some (not all - Alex can't catch a break) of the weaker characters still have their own rarer if weaker gimmicks and parry to cover for predictable play.
The systems are strong enough to carry players and there is a little bit of sauce from Sean and Remy even if it is context sensitive and not free neutral options like what Yun or Chun Li have.

Nothing can take away the impact third strike has had on the FGC as a whole. It’s a all time classic. But I don’t think the parry is perfect. I think it can be both great to use, and see spectators wise but abit too much to deal with defensively. Requiring a ton of practice and execution on the entire cast. It’s a daunting game, even more than tekken imo but man it’s sick lol. I wouldn’t agree with aris that there hasn’t been a street fighter that’s been enjoyable since 3S, 5 was good but it had some annoying characters and some characters dominated the game, and annoying elements like crush counter with priority system. Just felt stupid lol but was fun for awhile in season 1 and 2 for me. SF4 was also pretty good, and a solid street fighter through its life, yes there were os’s and wakeups you had to deal with that allowed some players to steamroll you if didn’t know how to deal with it, but learning how to deal with any specific Situation is apart of any fighting game. I feel it’s abit disingenuous to say there hasn’t been a fun sf since 3S while in the same breath say SF4 was fun to watch lol. I feel Aris has funny opinions sometimes. SF6 i feel is heading in the right direction, but hope it shapes up well

Honestly feel this. Felt like sfiv finals were extremely entertaining to watch and you could follow the action with just a rudimentary knowledge of the game . Where as 3s can be a little laborious to watch if you dont have intimate knowledge of confirms and matchups. 3s still is extremely fun once you get a handle of the game mechanics.
