- The thoroughbred has the Kentucky Derby. The quarter horse has the All American Futurity. This Labor Day classic determines who makes the starting gate by running 28 trials and nearly 280 horses competed in the trials for this $2.6 million dollar final run in Ruidoso, New Mexico with the gorgeous rugged Sierra Blanca mountain as the backdrop.

I didn't know we had such cool races in Ruidoso (i lived there for a few years and now live about 2 hours away). I learned to ride there as a kid.

Pitty more people dont know about their BLEEDING LUNGES every time they are thrashed this hard for a short time....
during and right after the race they don't bleed. Its when they race every other week for 10 years that they start too bleed

@@levlev.1028 No, exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage isn’t from racing often it’s from racing out of shape. It’s from a fast increase in blood pressure when the adrenaline increases and the pressure of the bloodstream gets higher than can be contained by veins and arteries. If a horse is in good condition, meaning it’s been exercised frequently and properly, it shouldn’t have an EIPH issue. Many horses run 20, 30 or even 50 races without ever bleeding. But again, bleeding is from “too much, too soon, too much“ without being in proper shape. A horse naturally increases drastically in blood pressure when it runs, it’s just how they are. But when they are not in proper shape by race day it’s like running the Alaskan Pipeline through a garden hose. There’s going to be a leak somewhere.
First off... "Lunges"??? Like a long line??? If you mean lungs, their lungs don't bleed 😂 internal hemorrhage is caused by running out of shape. Not running itself.

Why just why? What is the point in such a short race?
What's the point of a longer race, though? More stressful for both horse rider, plus, these are quarter horses. They are the fastest horses....for a quarter mile. After that their speed will drop, and an explosive fast race is more fun to watch, in my opinion, than a long drawn-out thoroughbred race. This is what these particular horses are good at
dude, chief captain these are the top fuel cars of horse racing, they were made for fast dashing and nimble footworking for doing cattle drives, 1/4 mile is what they were breed to run, and they are faster then a cheetah as well as many sports cars in that distance, they are powerful but also gentle enough for kids to learn to ride on them depending on the horse though, but tend to be more even tempered then other breeds, I was around them a bit as a kid doing 4h and watching horse shows, they are great at barrel racing and other riding arena speed games.

I agree, surely the Epsom Derby, Arc de Triomphe, Melbourne Cup, Irish Champion Stakes etc are far more entertaining than this
