As a budget friendly tip, instead of an expensive light box, I use a Ferrero rocher tray or a hard clear plastic storage box (you can get them in slim A4 size). Fill the box with battery operated lights and you have an in expensive light box alternative. I use a slim stationary storage box and I store my work in it when I'm done. Christmas tree lights work fine if you have no other lights. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for doing this video at normal speed and not filling up all the silence while you demonstrate the process with music. I love the stuff you share in your channel, and I follow many embroidery/appliqué/hand sewing/quilting/upcycling/mixed media channels… so many are highly edited and almost frenetic. I watched this while I cut out hexies by hand and it was a pleasant bit of calm crafty pleasure watching someone with more practice and skill without a ton of bells and whistles that spark nervous energy for me.

Another way to transfer without a light box is to use a square/rectangle of clear hard acrylic / perspex. Set the perspex down on a stable surface. Turn your phone torch on. Put the phone under the perspex, torch light up, and place pattern on the perspex surface. Stick the pattern to the perspex with a couple pieces of washi tape, place fabric on top and holding firmly in place, trace the pattern design with your preferred marking tool

@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Yes, that much: I've been copying images to fabric with freezer paper ironed onto fabric...which often mucks up my printer! Now I know how to transfer images to dark fabric. I also learned how to knot my thread like you do (on top) and then stitch down a few stitches under the stitched object and cutting off the ugly knot) so the back and front look neat. And the tissue paper idea is fabulous. I've used regular paper; parchment paper and interfacing with very unimpressive results. Bless you!

I do embroidery on and off and always love to have your videos in the background as company. Your channel is by far the best I have come across. Your opinions when testing new items etc. are totally unbiased which I love, for example when testing multipack cheaper embroidery threads instead of DMC or Anchor. Some 'skilled' embroiderers would poo poo these and say they were not up to standard. I have bought many of these kits and always enjoy using them. My preferred method to transfer a design is to use a light box or transfer using graphic copy paper. I use these methods most times and also use a water soluble pen for smaller free style transfers. I usually use Pinterest to source a design idea and then draw it onto paper and tweak it to suit my needs. I am glad I saw this video today because I have never heard of a heat transfer pen to iron the design on with. I shall get one and see how I get on with it. I also smile every time when one of your cats decides to invade the recording. Thank you Sarah for all you do for the embroidering community. It is very much appreciated and thank you also to Jonathon for recording them.

Not to be a nanny, I love your videos! But be sure your cat don't get them cut threads on her fur or in her mouth because if a thread gets in their mouth, it can wrap around the back of tongue and cause them to choke due to the tangle, and cause them to eventually wind up with water in the lungs from them choking on their saliva, eventually causing them to go into convulsions and it may be to late to save them by a vet. Saw this happen to a woman's cat that got a thread in its mouth, and she didn't realize that until it was to late. The cat wont be able to eat or drink. I'm mentioning this because I care about you and your beloved cat.

Hi Sarah. I’m having such a hard time transferring to a canvas backpack, a Fjallraven Kanken specifically. It’s not just regular canvas, it’s a waterproofed canvas so it can’t take any heat and can’t be vigorously washed as that will damage the waterproofing. On top of all of this (I know, I know), I am terrible at any freehand drawing. Any ideas for what I can do??
There are any number of Kanken embroidery tutorials but they all freehand draw the design. I would appreciate ANY HELP or tips that you can offer!! Thanks in advance.

I think you need the prick and pounce method Kara, the powder shou;d stay on long enough for you to join up the dots and you don't need to do any freehand drawing! Just a thought, if you embroider on a waterproof fabric, do the holes not make it..not waterproof?!

It's a hand printed Ajrakh block print from Gujarat in India Muhlenstedt! You can buy them from our shop here, the sales of which go to help out my artisan friends in India at this difficult time for them...

@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Thank you Sarah, I have bought two of them now. The shipping to Germany is a little hihg and problable I will have to pay extra customs taxes but I think it is worth of it: The prints are very beautiful and it is a good feeling when I know it helps indian people a little.

Thank you for your support Rita, they have just had a cyclone go through Gujarat which has knocked out power to many COVID hospitals so they really need all the help they can get right now. I marked your items as a gift so hopefully you didn't/won't have to pay any extra x
