It is good that you mentioned others as well. Fundamentally, we are all people.

Lots of great practical advice here. Thanks for posting the video. I could relate to most of it as a single 37 yo. The last part is especially true, you have to find happiness in life regardless of your relationship status.

I love the work of Louise L. Hay and her whole thing about positive affirmations and the concept of self-love. That was her main message in her long career as an author and lecturer, and she inspired a lot of people to have a better time of it. Self-validation is a large part of mental health in the long term.

Some great stuff in this, but no matter how hard i try I really cant see how one can ever be truly happy without the one thing they actually crave? It seems unhealthy to pretend to be happy when youre not, so I think the best we can do is find things to distract ourselves so we dont sit a dwell on how empty we actually feel.

This is the most honest comment. People need people, i don't care who you are. Therapists can spew the "love urself first and cope being single" til theyre blue in the face but it is a lie. I cant be happy knowing i will always be single and alone. I can only distract myself momentarily. It doesn't feel good and I shouldnt HAVE to be okay with that.

    • @KenHowardLCSWGayTherapyLA

I don't see it as quite a "lie", but I hear you; it can feel invalidating for someone (even a therapist) to say things that don't give recognition to how you feel, including negative feelings. I challenge the "knowing I will always be single and alone," because that assumes you can absolutely predict the future, which I don't think anyone can. I think it can be helpful to validate how much you feel it sucks being single, but also not measure your quality of life entirely by that. Positive human interaction (whether with romantic/domestic/sexual partners, or "fraternal" love with friends, etc.) is an important component of life. "No man is an island;" we exist as social creatures. Single guys do well to build a Social Support System and remain "open" to meeting someone for a relationship, but not to have their happiness "held hostage" by that idea. Quality of Life as a single person is an art and science to study and practice. I work with single clients on this in coaching or psychotherapy; let me know if doing that might interest you.

You're definitely not alone. This is good. It is causing you to reflect. Look within yourself. There you'll find the key to happiness.

    • @daodejing81

@empressatheism5146 No he didn't. Every experience is a teacher. Don't project your baggage onto him or anyone. Take responsibility for yourself, and be compassionate to your fellow man.
I loved my hookups. I wouldn't trade them for the world. Hooking up is not the problem. The problem is always related to looking outwardly for happiness instead of LOOKING WITHIN.

Thank God for the stages of life. We learn what death is all about, but we also learn what birth is all about.
To every ending, is there not always a beginning? Why should we think the physical death is any different? It too is followed by a birth, a beginning.
Life is not all about sex. Enjoy it to the fullest, but don't be attached to it, or to anything else.
Your true happiness is WITHIN YOU.
This comes to you from someone who is at ease with himself as a homosexual, aware of it since 5, out since 20 and now 64.
Enjoy whatever life brings, but be attached to nothing.

I bet you'd be a hit with younger guys who like daddies. Do you like younger guys (in general)? Lots of guys who are over 50 get a LOT of attention that way, and not just for "sugar daddy" money, either, but for the "wisdom of middle age". And if you like guys your age, there are PLENTY of single guys whom I bet would love to have a date with you rather than sit home yet another Saturday night. Keep yourself out there; I bet you'd be a great date for someone!
