I Photographed 10(ish) Distant Galaxies with a Small Telescope

- Can you photograph distant galaxies with just a small telescope, in my case a 3-inch refractor? Yes, you can! Of course there are limitations to how well the galaxies will turn out, but it's amazing what a small, cheap telescope can do!

Nice work and Grats on the 10K, Clear Skies.
Thank you!
As soon as it clears up I’m going outside again, thanks for your inspiring work!
Good to see someone else using Ekos with relatively simple gear. Thanks.
Great video Nick and awesome images. Love the outdoor section of the video. Definitely more of that. Feels like we’re setting up with you.
Thanks Rob, appreciate it!
I enjoy videos of people “doing things” as watching someone is a good way to learn. They may seem like the same to you, but to viewers there is always something new to learn.
Thanks Jonathan, good to know!
Congrats Nick on surpassing the 10k subscriber mark, that’s excellent!
Yes, keep doing the outside clips when your weather allows for it.
Glad you have some nice skies for getting out in the backyard! 👍🏻👍🏻
Loving the ekos stuff
Thank you!
We all love watching the 'outside' bits ! thanks for the video Nick, don't forget if your under sampled and dithering you could drizzle in DSS to make the image bigger maybe.
Thanks Gaz, I’ve never tried drizzling but I think you’re right, it’ll definitely help here
Nice video! And I like this type of video. Short and sweet, where you review your acquisition settings and show the final image at the end. (Also, it anything goes wrong-hopefully not-you review what happened and how it was corrected, if it was. Horrible mistakes are useful too, even if it isn't pretty. So please, keep doing them as you feel the desire to do so.
Thanks Dave! I didn’t make any mistakes in this one luckily but the UK skies were atrocious last week due to Saharan dust blowing over, it was particularly bad on the night when I filmed this video which is why the M106 image isn’t as good
Another great video- keep ‘em coming. I’ve got the same scope & camera so always good to get some inspiration as to what I can challenge myself with 😀.
Thanks Nick!
more of this type Nick great vlog oh and if u could show how u focus thru the pc the scope and guide scope too clear skies Mike
Thanks Mike. I use a bahtinov mask to focus and just loop 5 second exposures which are display on the laptop screen 👍🏻
more!
Great video Nick, keep them coming. Will you be watching the CME Aurora on the 31st? and hopefully the 1st... it should be visible here in Ireland so I'm thinking you should be able too?
No doubt it’ll be cloudy though 😃
@@AstroExploring yeah probably, I know I have a clear sky tomorrow night but we know how that goes..
I live in a suspiciously similar new-build estate. Bortle 4 skies here in Kent. I've got to give this a go and see what I can get with my DSLR and Star Adventurer. I have a 5" SCT but the mount is very difficult to polar align, sadly!
Give it a go, what’s the worst that could happen? 😃
@@AstroExploring I fall over, break everything and sit in the middle of the garden screaming into the abyss and waking the neighbours.
On second thoughts, the minutes those clouds go away again...
Another great video Nick, glad your all settled in now in the new home, ive been using my LS"6 ota on the skywatcher heq5 pro now for the last couple of weeks, got phd2 guiding working, still a few creases to iron out but getting good 6min subs on a standard dslr so far... If you would like to use my LS"6 ota to get in a bit closer to those galaxies for a couple of sessions please do give me a shout, it could also help with slightly different content for your channel, and as always clear skies
Thanks Jez, that’s a great idea!
@@AstroExploring I will message you directly on Instagram messaging service, with more details, an some ideas 💡
What I always think when I see pictures of galaxies - this smear of lights is another milky way, with millions of stars, planets and maybe some green aliens taking a similar picture of our galaxy just right now.
I think the same 😃
I feel the same with my videos. But recently I’ve put so much pressure on myself I’ve not gotten to finalize a video in months. Tomorrow is my day off. Hopefully I’ll have inspiration then.
I always sleep through my meridian flips. Also my ASIAIR just stops when astro dark is over. So I don’t have to calculate or wake up to stop the mount.
Yep I might be even lazier than Cuiv
Hopefully you can finish your video, Martin!
I really like your videos and your doggie :D
subbed!
Thanks!
Awesome shots Nick! I also type in a random number for the amount of subs I want to take lol
Haha glad it’s not just me!
Great video Nick, love watching your in the field videos, I use the same scope too and yep not the best on galaxies but you got to give them a go, I did spend 4 hours on M101 and had a half decent image. I believe congratulations are in order if I heard your new family member in the background 👍👶
I wasn’t sure how many would hear her in the background but yes, we have a newborn baby 😃
@@AstroExploring congratulations to you both 👏😊
Always look forward to your videos keep up the good work
Thanks Keith 👍🏻
I see that you used the ZWO ASI533MC Pro but you had the gain set to 120. Can you explain your reasoning behind that decision as the unity gain for that camera is 100. I also have that camera and I am always interested to see whether it is worth experimenting with.
I'm always worried that if I leave my equipment out in the garden overnight, someone will steal it! Do you have any security cameras etc? (And let's be honest, that doesn't stop them)
I don’t have any security cameras. I do also worry about it being stolen but unless I’m sat in my garden I’m not entirely sure what I could do. Maybe a camera linked to a tablet to keep an eye on the gear at least? It’s hard because when it’s a work night I definitely need to go to bed 🥱
Try taking photos of objects that are not in the Messier catalogue, like that you are not doing what most other channels do. Einstein rings?
Yes please.
Clear Skye's from Denmark
Surely M106 is not 67 million ly "across"... Perhaps you were talking about radius, but there's still three zeroes too many.
Same applies for the Milky-way.
Oops, did I say million? I definitely meant thousand! Apologies
Yep was going to say the same. For info our Milky Way galaxy is ~100,000 lights across [radius], our neighbour Andromeda is about twice the size at ~200,000 light years. I remember reading recently the largest known galaxy [a radio galaxy] has just been published in Feb this year - had to go and look it up again - its been names as Alcyoneus and is a staggering 16 million light years in size. Now that is big!
May I ask can u please list the equipment that y u using and the computer program as well. Thanks
Skywatcher Evostar 72ED telescope
ZWO 533MC Pro camera
Optolong L Pro filter
HEQ5 Pro mount
Am I the lonely tilted optic train outhere.
You meant to say "THOUSAND lightyears across " ;)
Yep, I certainly did!
