For a short documentary, this is really a great job! Well done guys! I noticed from the things said by the farmers, "the big companies employ the poor farmers to burn the forest for their palm oil plantation, then when there is haze problem, everyone blames the poor farmers, not the big companies behind them!" I saw SIMEDARBY few times in this video! But never heard that from the mainstream media or even the alternative media even once here in Malaysia! The names of the companies involved in this burning never surface!
my heart breaks for Sumatra's loss of its forests as a result of the greed of corporations engaged in palm oil production. it's just unfortunate that some people are willing to bring death to others just for the sake of earning more money.
you know why suddenly Indonesia accept international help after months of rejection. thats because the wind has now changed direction. it no longer blow the haze away from Indonesia but blow back to Sumatra, and by December, it will blow to Jakarta. Thats why indonesia haze always in between the month of April to October when the wind blows to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. They will never burn it when the wind blows to Jakarta. They will continue to burn again next year and the year after next, forever, unless their palm oil export reduced. India is their biggest palm oil buyer, i guess u know which country's palm oil to boycott from today.
Good work! I live in Singapore and never really researched the details behind the haze problem but now I know. It is a sad state of affairs. We are angry here but I do feel for the community living in ground zero. Corrupt governments and big business, a marriage made in heaven. Anyways, keep up the good work. You provide the independent voice none of SEA's TV networks dare to take. Asean is a joke.
For people who live in Kalimantan or Sumatera: in your home, please don't burn your bin as hard as you can, go recycle your bin. If there is haze or forest conflagaration around your neighborhood help SAR team and fireman.
I'm a student of world politics I have to watch this to write an assigment. What makes me sad, that even if I ever worked for UN or in EU institutions I wouldn't be able to help in any way, one human being cannot beat the corporations and change a system, all western civilization is using less advanced regions as their slaves. Imagine farmers who have to grow plants for the whole season and by the end of it they get 1 dollar for the whole production. They work all season and for these money and cannot even afford medical treatment. And how about children slavery in coffee, tea and cocoa plantations? All production goes to The West. Western states, especially USA, established the new day slavery. All we hear in media, schools universities, is how great the western civilization is, how much great things it has done like ending global poverty, charity, saving climate, helping the poor.... This is disgusting
can i share this on facebook so that more people are aware of the real situation. may seem like a gigantic task to educate and create awareness to the mass public but i believe every great endeavour starts with a small step.
Indonesian & Malaysian palm oil, Brazil beef & agriculture, pulp and paper, these industries are the biggest culprits of deforestation on the planet now. Yet look at EU, US and China, they have decimated their primordial forests & wildlife in the name of progress. They have managed to get away scot-free till date. What's left of natural forest cover in EU is about 35%, US 31% and China 18%. I have always been profound in saving the worlds lush tropical rainforests. But how are we to discourage deforestation when we are the worst of examples? Indonesia still has 50% of its forest (2015). sigh.
+Ian Bartczak two evils do not make a right... and why must we be moral apostles to other countries? do they not have to come to such moral realizations for their own good? what does an evolution of ethics serve if not the liberation of past pathetic (non)morality?
+Ian Bartczak All we can do now is to rectify the situation before it gets out of hand. But how? Well, unfortunately it's not my field of expertise so i can't give much of an insight.
Palm oil is a healthy oil, but the European oil industry is spending a lot of money to sabotage palm oil industry. The European vegetable oils such as sunflower, corn, canola, are low yield crop oils. Palm oil plantations produce 10x more oil than all the European vegetable oils, so the European oil industry wants to put a stop to palm oil. What do they do? 1. They fund the Environmental Groups and activists to say the rainforest and orangutans are dying "all because of palm oil". But in actuality there are many other factors to deforestation such as construction, farming, development, timber trade, etc. But they only blame palm oil. 2. The European oil industry tries to boycott palm oil by forcing manufacturers such as Nestle and P&G to stop using palm oil. 3. The latest accusation is that palm oil "the evil industry" is using child labour. Untrue. Not all palm oil plantations use child labour. In Indonesia, the people are so poor and often the family needs the children to help out in easy tasks part time such as sweep the leaves, collect some loose fruits. But only in small percentage of cases. You can't ban palm oil just because a small percentage use child labour, you might as well ban Nike and Adidas shoes and Iphones. 4. The Europeans are now forcing big banks to stop funding planters who are in the palm oil business, unless the planters join a "Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil" controlled by the Europeans. Yeah very smart, after they join, you Europeans control the palm oil industry for your own profit.
I'm Indonesian, love Indonesia but i really hate the government...most of them only thinking the money.. most of them only think how to corruption...that's why i don't like to stay in Indonesia...

@@roohaskeys It's like they felt a need to keep a consistent amount of cuts throughout the video, when implementing more cuts in that part does not add anything and only distracts from the content.
This is like Vietnamese rubber and coffee plantations they destroyed the forest environment also the company destroyed the Montagnards indigenous life hood. When I see smoke blowing to the air like this make me sad when I think about Vietnamese did to my Montagnards indigenous people.
Ok, then it always comes down the same issues: processed food and everyday products. It doesn't matter whether we are talking about human health, climate change, industry, or habitat/biodiversity destruction; it ALWAYS comes down to processed food and everyday products. So: better than voting smartly, buy smartly, right?
Some people in Indonesia just think about short term. Buy land, fire that, plant palm trees. Okay palm oil makes you rich, but be creative, Jati, Sungkai, Meranti, and other horticulture can make more than enough to make money. Jati wood is long term and good investment.
Those company owners are not representative of Malaysian and Singaporean voices. The citizens are the ones being hit by the haze while the owners could be enjoying life abroad. So it's not the citizens' fault. You can't put the blame back on the citizens complaining.
+d15z1sux They can and sometimes do. Using machinery still obviously destroys the rainforest, but it doesn't cause smoke/haze problems that burning does.
+d15z1sux Let me put it this way: Renting/buying chainsaw+fuel to cut trees cost : 100-500 USD, A can of gas/oil (minyak tanah) to burn forest cost : 1 USD As businessman, which one you would prefer to use?
Well done on making the best documentary I have seen on the causes and consequences of the haze in South East Asia. Two of your key questions need be followed up. 1) What does a palm oil plantation on peat soil look like in 20+ years? (hint: often abandoned - www.wetlands.org/OurWork/Greeningtheeconomy/Towardssustainablepalmoil/tabid/3470/Default.aspx) 2) Where can land be found to grow palm oil without destroying tropical rain forests? (hint: it doesn't exist)

I love palm oil & will continue to use them.
Phuket under a pall of smoke today, and has been for the last week.
We should find a substitute for Palm oil
palm fruits (palm nuts) would be suitable. Palm oil is produced from palm fruits
..or a better way to cultivate it. not burning the forest

the haze blocks out the sun, so that means that their plants and animals will die. everything needs sun!
The demand for Palm oil isn't the problem. It's the process of slash and burn. Which isn't the company owners' nor the consumers' fault.
Very well done.
