This is so interesting. I grew up in New Glarus, and it truly is an amazing little village.

I most certainly am. In fact, my family lineage goes back to 870 AD.

Schwanden, Glarus -- where the original immigrants came from. They immigrated in the mid 1800s. Very proud of my Swiss heritage -- I was born in 1950 and participated in the Wilhelm Tell Festival for many years. Of course, the town no longer resembles the town I grew up in, but that is progress, I suppose.

There are at least three languages of the Swiss people -- Swiss Italian, Romansch, Swiss German. Ny father was fluent in Swiss/German, which is a variation of German.

If former holders and their supporters had allowed former slaves to continue building towns they had established with the end of slavery, we too would have a similar story. The finest example is of Tulsa, OK, nicknamed Black Wall Street. Blacks founded towns across the south, but faced terror campaigns and were eventually motivated to leave - heading North for factory jobs, but nothing compares to building your own town, having your own land and working for yourself, enjoying the literal fruits of your labors.
