    A few remarks. The list includes a few pieces from the Anna Magdalena Notebook. This notebook is a compilation of pieces and most of them were NOT composed by JS Bach. This is a common mistake that should be avoided, especially because most of those pieces (like the Musette in D) do not represent Bach’s compositional style.
    The video mentions that the Baroque period (ca. 1650-1650) is one of the earliest periods of music. This is an unnecessary and wrong remark that ignores History. The Baroque was preceded by more than five centuries of music and key composers who lived during the Medieval and Renaissance perIods and who set the foundations of Western classical music.

      Hello thank you for your expertise I really appreciate your feedback and I’m gonna Pin your comment so people can see the corrections!
      I love music and studied commercial music and piano performance, not music history specifically it’s just an interest of mine as a pianist. So I’m definitely NOT an expert but I’m learning more everyday and I learned something from you and I hope others can too. Thanks again 😀

      And yes I agree with your comment regarding western music. When I’ve taken western music history courses in the past usually we will spend 1-2 weeks on Hildegard and Gregorian Chant ETC and breeze through 300-400 years before “starting” in the baroque era so I agree that is hubris and a common mistake I’ve made and since learned from haha

    I'd also say that at least the first four French Suites are utterly indispensable, but get an Urtext edition rather than heavily edited versions (especially Czerny's). If you can find it, Rosalyn Tureck's three-volume "Introduction to the Performance of Bach" is excellent as are the two volumes of Walter Carroll's "First Lessons in Bach".

    The reason the fugue in G minor is mostly heard on the organ is, well, because it's written for organ, with a pedal part. If you just play the original on a piano, you're leaving a very important part out.

    A few corrections - Bach didn't pioneer the fugue, it was around for a century before. Also, he wrote fugues w up to 6 voices

    Having lived with Bach all my life, I would suggest "Listen to the great masterpieces: the B Minor Mass, the great organ works, the prominent cantatas, the instrumental concerti -- to motivate you to _want to play_ what you can of his works on the keyboard." My meeting with Bach at age 11 was the D minor double violin concerto BWV 1043, on an LP record, and from there I went on to study organ and compose contrapuntal music all my life. To know the colossus which is Bach should be the strongest motivation to want to explore this world of genius and emotion. Once I met the St. Matthew Passion, that set the course forever.
    BWV 578 (G minor "Little fugue") on the piano won't work because you can't use your feet as needed. Playing Bach organ works on the piano is much, much more difficult than playing them on the organ, and hardly to be recommended to beginners. What an odd choice for representative Goldberg variation, too - How about 17? 25? The aria itself?
    PS. As I'm sure you know, Bach did not write ANY "piano concerti", no matter how good his clavier concerti sound on the piano. But you do need an orchestra!
    But thank you for spreading the word of Bach in any form.

    I'm new to Bach and want to know if I can do it before spending a life time. So I'm learning Partita No.2 in C Minor, BWV 826 Allegro part, which I think is supposed to be at 109 BPM metronome. I'm probably up to 80 BPM right now without any mistakes and up to this point the fingering seems to be the same. But as I try to speed up the fingering changes. It seems like I'm having to use my wrist more. Is this because I still haven't mastered it at low speed or is this normal? In other words, do I just keep repeating the wrong part because I'm playing too fast, or do I just keep playing it at 80 BPM till I super-master it, which sort of doesn't make sense to me, because what if I spend endless time super-mastering it and still unable to play at at 109 BPM? Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance

    • @JordanEvansMusic
      @JordanEvansMusic  Місяць тому

      Hey thanks for your comment and let me see if I can offer some advice…
      You’ve made some amazing observations and you are really thoughtful about practice. I love comparing stuff like this to improving at weightlifting - you’re not gonna go from 20 lbs to 100 lbs - over weeks, months, and years you’re gonna go from 20 to 25 to 30 to 35 maybe 35 again then 40 etc…
      So metronome is a GREAT way to train ourselves and move up in small increments- so try going from 80 and do that for a few days then do 85 for a few days and then 90. As you approach 109 you can even go from 100 to 102 for example.
      It’s also good to work on technique like scales and arpeggios using a metronome and really focus on keeping your wrists relaxed and make sure you fingers are doing all the work. If you practice those techniques during your warm ups it will become effortless when you’re playing the pieces.
      Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to improve so quickly you can take your time! Slow consistency will add up and you’ll be shocked at what you can achieve!!

      @@JordanEvansMusic Thanks for the tips. The reason I was sort of confused was because I noticed Glen Gould would play the parts at normal speed, stop at mistakes, and repeat until he got it. But that' Glen Gould LOL....
      You're correct about fingers instead of wrist. I stopped using wrist, which I read in some forum and wondered, and much better now. I also have carpal tunnel which doesn't help
      Thanks

      If you are new to Bach you should certainly not start with the Partitas but with easier polyphonic pieces. I would suggest you master first a couple of 2 voice Inventions, followed by a few 3 voice Sinfonias before venturing into the Partitas, which are much more complex from a composition and polyphonic voicing perspective. Several of the French or English Suites are also simpler than the Partitas.

    • @solveet2011
      @solveet2011 24 дні тому

      @@ampac So here is the problem so far, I was wrong and I'm up to 88bpm and when i record and speed up to 109 it sounds exactly like Gould or others. But when I try 90+ my left hand can't do 1/8th notes or faster. It's almost like my fingers freeze or something and I have to use my wrist and play incorrectly by lifting my wrist to do it. But it's fine in 1/8 notes and slower. The other problem is my neighbors complain so I'm using a $50 synth but it is weighted keys but there is no sustain so I have to hold the notes with my fingers because it's so choppy and that slows me down too. the way I see it, it could take weeks to get up to 100+. Thanks for help

    It'd be important to mention that Bach composed this music for the instruments available in his time: pipe organ, harpsichord, clavichord. He never played the fortepiano, let alone the modern (equally-out-of-tune) piano.

    I play guitar and I tried learning some compositions I enjoy, like the Brandenburg Concertos. Man, it was a struggle! I almost gave up, because it was too fucking hard! Turns out I didn't have the proper technique so I had to stumble upon the solution and now I have the technique and I can play along. But it was hard. You know the pedal thing Bach likes to do? That is fucking hard to play on the guitar. I guess on the violin is easier. Oh, God, why didn't I choose the violin instead? My musical life would be so much easier. Bach is awesome.
