- So after all the hard work getting the Loader to run properly and actually WORK, I'm having MAJOR problems again!
It will not stay running, and I'm pretty sure its a FUEL supply issue, but I don't know for sure!
We'll dive BACK into the fuel system, but this time with the help of the guys at @AreaDieselService and see if we can get the old Allis Loader BACK into service and running well again!
~
Check out PART 1 of rescuing this Old Loader HERE:
• Allis Chalmers 645 Whe...
~
This old loader is a 1965 Allis Chalmers TL645 Wheel Loader with an Allis Chalmers 3500 turbo charged 6 cylinder diesel engine. It has an Allison automatic transmission, and can reach speeds of 21MPH going forward! It is articulated and can make VERY tight turns, making it very nimble in tight places. It weighs about 26000 lbs or so, and it's a PERFECT sized machine for all the random things I do!
Join me on this journey as we work together to figure out what it's going to take to get this machine back up and running once again! This will be a daily account of the process showing a bit more of what is takes to properly bring this old beast back to life and make it usable once again!
This machine should be a LOT of fun!
~
Thanks as always for watching and following along with all my crazy adventures here on Salvage Workshop, I TRULY appreciate it!

The hour meter running backwards is usually caused by the battery connected wrong way around. I'm not sure if you are aware or not but generators run a positive earth system. Here in New Zealand the old Allis Chalmers loaders were classed as some of loaders back then. Keep up the videos of saving the old equpment.
So THATS how i make it look like there are less hours on a machine than there actually are!... lol jk...I had rounded up when i wrote the hours originally, and the hour meter just never changed! Now i know thst needs fixed! Add it to the list!

My working day just ended !! Finally crashed in the sofa (its 8pm here) and i got a 1.50hr video !!!! Come ooooon !
[8 months later] It just goes to show you that with just a few simple repairs it can be made to run like a top! ;-) Thanks for the videos, good to see it run.
The big bag of cheap Harbor Freight spring clamps can be your best friend when stringing up tarps and temporary tarp shelters. They seem to hold pretty well until winds get a little crazy and definitely save a bunch of fiddling around. Wish I had your perseverance on projects without getting distracted by...Squirrel! Thanks for the great content as always.
Hi Matt, have really missed your videos and looking forward to watching this one 👍
Really enjoyed the way you clarified the process of rebuilding the injection pump and injectors. Plus, thank you for the longer episode. I always feel like I'm missing a lot of good content with shorter episodes.
Saving old iron is so satisfying, keep up the great videos. Love, health and respect from Scotland UK.
Satisfying but horrifyingly back breaking..
@@FrequencyOfThought They built them to last back in the day.. Unfortunately u don't get anything to make it past that dreaded Warranty anymore.. LMAO
What a job!
Glad you let Area Diesel Service sort it out, they just work magic what I can tell from some other videos.
That 34° adjustment did the rest, quite unusual, as most adjustments refer to plain TDC...
Thx a lot for letting us watch you getting it done despite of all the qbstacles with the rain, snow and the cold, well spent two hours!
👍👍👍
I really enjoy your videos working with the older machines. Please keep them coming 😊
It sure does run great now, I really admire your tenacity. Makes for very interesting videos.
Hell yeah! Girl has some life, hard work and perseverance over "throw it in the scrap", my dad always told me, you can make any old vehicle work, it's the difference between the work invested and just throwing new parts at it.
Congrats on the fix! Frustrating but so rewarding when you get to that Eureka moment!
I loved watching this... obviously months of dedicated efforts. I especially loved that you used Area Diesel Service... like Diesel Creek, Watch Wes Work... and many other channels. I just hope that they made a video of your rebuild. If they did, I'd love for you to share the link with us. It's incredible how intricate all those components are... the sheer amount of engineering that went into their design. Meanwhile, I'm so glad you got your Alys Chalmers up and running again... can't wait to see what you use it for. Oh... also... very pleased to see one of your brothers on board. I love family businesses that work.
What a great video. I know how you feel, I’ve been there many times. Congratulations! Hard work pays off. Best wishes.
Looking at the previous videos on this huge machine to catch us up brought back memories of where this machine was, I remember now
Congratulations finding that timing issue. What a battle! You persevered and won in the end.
8/39/23; watching your incredibly positive attitude is inspiring & overflows into my other job difficulties & stimulates a much better personal attitude within me..at age 78/healthy & still 'wiggling' as i go about my projects. Thank you for showing all viewers your 'can do' attitude & how persistance = accomplishment especially when searching for & repairing old heavy equipment. Much enjoy your channel. Stay safe & carry on!💪🗜🪒🍺👍
Yes! I can’t wait to watch this ! I demand you Post more videos! JK thanks for taking the time to make great videos.
Awesome video! A lot of trials and tribulations. I'm glad that you got it running and going. We will see more and more of it as you work on your property
I'm sure you didn't notice, but on the ADS tech's workbench was a power supply. (19:38 shows it) I have the same power supply, never use it. I reached out to ADS to see if they want it. Appears so. They're even paying shipping. Everybody benefits from watching your content!
No, I honestly didn't notice, but I'm glad you did! Thanks for doing that for them, I truly appreciate it, and I'm sure they do too!
It's always interesting to me to see guys troubleshoot and restore these glorious old beasts. Built "simple", built to last but like that 34 deg BTDC glitch, you need the manuals. Military manuals if you can get them are the best. Great job, hope to see this beauty in top shape again as you correct all the other issues.
The old '65 Allis Chalmers Front Loader runs great with your mechanical expertise!"
There's something deeply satisfying about seeing an old machine others have given up on get a bit of TLC and get put back to work. I think I'd have liked being a mechanic or operator of some kind. Got pushed into computers instead and regretted it after a few years and went to carpentry/construction. Always loved working with machines. They have personalities and can be quite interesting to work with. Thanks for letting me watch over your shoulder. Cheers.
Good video Matt, Bring back ole RED someday.👍🏻 WE WANT RED,WE WANT RED!!!LOL
Its so crazy to see how intricate diesel motors are to where the specialists have to use such fine measurement tools. Must take a LONG time to gain all that knowledge.
Those manuals are a godsend for your maintenance. If you were closer to me, I'd rewire it for you and end that problem altogether. Good luck & thanks for taking us along with you on this project.
Enjoyed this video so much. Your tenacity is unbelievable. Thanks for sharing
Your mechanical knowledge is impressive.
In addition to the dirt seals on the the injection nozzles , I find a good coat of never-sieze on the outside helps keep any dirt or moisture out of the bore. Helps a lot when removing later.
The coolent heater is for heating up the engine on cold days in the winter months you can bypass the cab heater but you will still need the other coolent lines to warm up the engine.
Agreed very important on diesel engines to keep that intact
those coolant lines also cool the compressor head .. hook them back up
42:42 WD-42 is made from fisch oil. I use it to polish my black shoes, it works perfectly for long long time
What an astute observation those machines were built at another time and something is up with the transmission. Man I wish that you had a newsletter because I would totally subscribe for those little jewels of wisdom alone.
That was an arduous process but you got her going better than ever! I remember when you pulled ol girl outta the barn with the dozer, so glad to see it running so well!
Fantastic video, glad you were able to pick up the military manual for her. Sometimes it's the simplest information that cause the most issues.
Glad you two. Started the build again! I have been with you since the beginning. Now that you have started the build again I believe your channel Will grow like wild fire! ❤
1:27:05 I bet she runs like a beast once you get her back together this time. Really great to have gotten the military version of the manuals - also super great of that keen viewer who had the military parts list for you, those blown up diagrams of each part on that machine are priceless when it comes to an old machine like this one. Really nice!!
That test rig where your pump actually runs an engine (in their shop) is incredible! Can't get any closer to actually putting it back in your machine. AND he can make fine adjustments right there. That is so Sweet.
Thank you for sharing.
Crazy how the simple of things fix what could've been and seemed like a lot worse.
CONGRATS! GOOD JOB EVERYONE!
I have been inspired by yours and others rehabbing old equipment. As a direst consequence I’m fixing and restoring tools and fixtures in our home and my shop.
Thank you for sharing your work.
did you clean the fuel tan out? i bet theres a bunch of dirt in the tank and its sucking into the pump and plugging it up.
Life is a bit easier if you do a test fit without the seals, to get the gear and pump clocked, and mark the gear to the timing gear housing. Then pull the pump, install the seals and it is already alligned enough to close it up.
Hi Matt, really enjoyed this video and can't wait for your next. I just love these old machines and how brilliant you are at talking through what you are doing. Really appreciate the time and effort you put into your channel 👍👍👍
Im not a gear head, certainly not a mechanic, i know nothing about diesels at all, eventhough i used to drive tractor trailers, but every time you put out a video im sotting here watching amd learning. I smile and gifgle when some old machine sputters to life. Ive run old equipment and i mean old, but just seeing these things brought back to life for another run is so cool. I'd never be able to figure out the things you do, so i live vicariously through you. Just great.
Didn't you ever want to take the time to learn about diesel engines when you were driving them for a living? What would you do when you had a mechanical issue?
@@giggiddy i know some basic things, but if and when i ever broke down on the road, i called the fleet manager and he or she dealt with it while i sacked out. same as a blown tire, they called a roadside crew and they came and fixed it. always had my self prepared to stay somewhere if need be. since i dont drive them any more, i have no desire to learn about them now.
@@JamesThomas-gg6il Makes sense to me. Cheers
Conclusion : You can't guess what needs to be known...they call that expertise. Only time ( and a lot of research...) can bring it. Kudos for keeping up the hard work!
Enjoyed the video ,is that the original cab for that machine ?
I:20:00 Glad to see that our Cap Plug Kit helped you get your Loader up and running!
Absolutely! I've been using it a LOT lately!
Something else to check is the valve lash it could be off enough to cause hard starting and rough idle
I was thinking the same thing that old engine could use an overhead in the worst way.
I love all your videos
Umbrella! Aha! That makes more sense! Like the seals in a master cylinder.
Good to see you
Your videos are very well done. Good stuff I'm glad I found you. See ya.
Nice to have a helper
Isn't it amazing how well that ultrasonic cleaner works !! I have one and I love it !! And that stapler looks AMAZING !! And works like a dream !! And I really enjoy the history of each item you restore !! 👍👍
Great to see you saving this old iron and giving it some work great video very informative thank you for sharing
Running very nicely now - amazing to think that it ran at all when the timing was 35 degrees out of whack actually. Well done.
Thanks for making the video long-form to reflect the project. Sometimes I want the small bite 20 minute videos, but not as often as UA-cam thinks.
C&C Equipment just showed the little tool to install those Umbrella seals; bet they could hook you up with it if you wanted one.
Well done, I was so happy to sit down for an hour fifty minutes and see this job through to a conclusion instead of two or three videos. Excellent bit of detective work tracking the timing problem down, she sure does sound good now.
When you get done playing with Allis , are you gonna be getting back to ole red , Matt? Look forward to that beast coming alive again. Great job Matt!
Couldn't believe it, 1hr 50mins of Diesel fun viewing. It made my day. Bring it on . . .
Ahh! A nice winter haircut. How invigorating!!!
When breaking and tightening the injector lines I use a crow's foot "tube wrench" and a rachet and extension. Makes bleeding injectors EZ-PZ. I have both imperial and metric crows foot tube wrenches i bought at Harbor Freight. Next time you bleed injectors you will thank yourself for going to Harbor Freight. Good video . Thanks for taking the time for us to enjoy.
I have been fighting a JD 1010 crawler for months and have watched a lot of videos. Your rebuilding of the injector pump was the only one that showed where the plastic buffer washer under the governor weights goes and how to put it on . I will be redoing the pump if I can find a cylinder liner plate assembly that is under $2,000 bucks. Great work, and thanks.
Awesome! Glad the video helped you out! Good luck with the 1010!
Good in-depth analyses of this Wi-Fi breaker. Yes, not super safe with the remote control or time settings. I bet it won't last long in service when there are a couple of mains spikes or a lightning strike nearby. A lot of electronic stuff crammed in that package. Interesting motor drive arrangement with a small hobby type of motor.
Enjoyed this video, liked seeing some behind the scene footage of Area Diesel service, very informative. I also like your tenacity and follow thru on making things as right as you can young man, thanks for the update.
Great video. I like how meticulously you document everything. 2 hours well spent😉👍
This is gonna be a great machine again when you've finished it.
Good Evening Workshop, it is 7:23 pm on 8/30/23 here in AZ ! Have a great day today , Sir !
We had a newer 575 B model made in the late 1970s. When it reached into the 20,000 engine hours it got very difficult to start and needed ether to start. The engine was worn out so the compression was low. The dealer offered a replacement new engine repower which was an Iveco engine that came with everything necessary to replace the Allis Chalmers engine.
Sounds great congratulations on beating the problem. That manual that person sent you put you on the right track.
i know him. .his good and amazing 👍
that guy helps diesel creek on his work 👍
Thanks for taking us along on this project. I really enjoy the chance to see a story through. Nice catch on the timing problem.
New camera? Outstanding crispness
To clean that oil off, super clean degreaser,
Thank You !!!!!!!!!!!!! Greetings from Poland, Europe
Always so cool watching the pros do stuff.
I cant believe that anything worked on that rusted out manifold- especially the turbo. Nice work
I spent many a hot summer hour in the cab of one of these shuttling sand back and forth in a gravel pit. The engine sound is music to my ears.
I got much respect for your hustle and how you do whatever you gotta do to get her rite , however long it takes.
Good job getting it going 👏
"These coolant lines are run al 'professionally." 🙂 Great video and a lot of work. Thank you.
Using the o-rings made me wonder if they would interfere with the function of the crush washers.
My thoughts exactly. Wouldn’t the installed height change with the o rings?
No, once tightened down the oring is able to just slip a bit higher on the injector body... if it wasn't sealing at an injector we would know based on how the engine sounds.
@@SalvageWorkshop why put the o-rings then anyway
Nice to have that machine up. Wow you have some wonderful viewers that provided the tech manuals to get that fuel pump timed
I always enjoy watching you working on the machines you have 😊
Excellent troubleshooting and fix!!
Another great Video!
You are a great teacher, and I learn so much.
Thank you.
As you were talking about the fuel pump issues, In my head I was thinking take it to area diesel….
Well done! 👏 👏 👏
It’ll be nice to see her all fixed up. You did a great job so far!
She sounds great after the timing was fixed! Thanks for sharing keep the videos coming
1:00:02 why not weld a new one from stainless pipe bends and plates - then have the plates milled flat at a shop
This looks like the PERFECT tool for clearing "Just Stop Oil" protesters.
The way it was running at 1:04:30 I wouldn't change a thing.
Congrats on the fixes. Ron PTL USA
This is a great video sometimes you just want to watch a long one and the content is outstanding thanks for sharing this six stars
Both of those
manuel's are going
to be helpful with
future repair to the
loader. I enjoyed
the longer video
it seemed like you
got alot accomplished.
Propane torch on the inlet manifold is a great help when starting that cold
I thoroughly enjoyed that, I'm sure there will be more. Thank you for sharing.
Love the longer video. Great work. I would rather run older equipment myself.
Great video! Could you give an update on the Jeeps and Red? You might want to checkout Diesel Creek, rescued an old machine - maybe you could source some parts for Red? Great info on the flex-ring and the pump - learned something new!
Thanks for another interesting and educational journey of Salvage and restoration. Understanding how things work and why professionals do what they do, is becoming ever more valuable; As time goes forward, those with the knowledge and knowhow are lost to us. That being said, there is also value in you exploring and figuring out what you can and I appreciate that you showcase both. Looking forward to all you have planned.
Matt at Diesel Creek is working on his Allis Chalmers loader. He found a new motor and may end up with a spare exhaust manifold.
Good tip I learned about spreading gasket maker. If you lick your finger before hand or dip in water it won’t stick to you
