It's hinted that he plays dumb on purpose in order to get Ryunosuke to figure it out himself. Every time you spot him at the crime scene, he's inspecting the thing that ends up being critical to the case, suggesting that he's already solved it.

While the trial was all over the place, it did have a certain thread of logic and the characters "sounded" quite faithful to the originals. Well done!
