Part 1 Vauxhall Corsa C ABS Light On Speedo Erratic - How To Diagnose

  • Vauxhall Corsa C ABS Light On Speedo Erratic: In this video we look at a common problem with the Vauxhall Corsa C, this is a petrol engined model and the ABS light has come on. The Speedometer has also started to become erratic. This could be linked as the ABS sensor on the passenger front wheel also sends a signal to read the speed of the vehicle.
    We take a look at the reluctor rings or the tone rings and clean them and check for cracks. You should check these before you go out and buy new ABS sensors.

    Thank you so much for this video. Thanks to you I was able to sort out my ABS sensor and erratic speedo. I wasn't getting any fault codes, but I cleaned out the left hand side front ABS ring and now it works fine! I'd never have thought of that. Thank you!!!

    Thanks for the great video, helped me sort my Tigra with the same issues and 0500 error code. Replaced the nearside sensor to resolve. 👍

    My lad learnt to drive in his Corsa C 3 years ago and still has it, cracking little car. His is a 2002 1.2SXi without ABS and it really threw me at 1st when I saw just one ABS sensor on the passenger side hub. Then I realised that was the speedo sensor.
    The light flashing diagnostic is really handy, user it when he complained of erratic running and stalling. Turned out to be a faulty crank position sensor, £11 for a new one and job done

    Your next job is get new discs and pads as that one is buggered, one side thicker than the other caused most likely by the slider pins being stuck or pins needing lube.

    This video could be the problem. When I am driving my Corsa 2010, the speedo and the revs fluctuate randomly and the ABS light comes on here and there. This happens every minute or so. While this happens, the service and battery light also come on momentarily. Any advice on this?

    There are Vauxhall specific OBD diagnostic tools available - it will allow you to read the speed from each ABS sensor as you drive (I presume this will as well, the ones I have used in the past have), as well as read fault codes easier, and delete them. Search for "Tech2" on eBay, not the generic OBD tools as they usually only do engine related stuff, and won't connect to ABS, airbag and other systems unless you spend a lot of money.
    You can get the ones that connect to a laptop for around £10 - £15, and they come with software.
    If you have something like this (may be worth having anyway if he's keeping the Corsa for a while), it should help rule out the ABS sensors as being faulty, and save you money buying them (I think they are about £35/£40 each). The software also displays road speed from the sensor in the gearbox, so if that shows a reading, and the speedo in the car doesn't, it could be the connector on the instrument cluster, for example.

      I do have an OBD 11 cheap diagnostic reader but that does not pick up the 0500 fault that the dash indicator does as you said, I'll check out the Tech2 one. A lot of people give the dash a hit if the speedo plays up as this is a common fault on these due to the connector but I think you probably know that lol.

      retrorestore I didn't know it was a problem with the Corsa - I have had a problem with the connector on an Astra of around the same age, though.
      I believe there's a modified connector block you can get from Vauxhall, and I don't think it's that expensive either.

    • @retrorestore

      mrman17
      It seems to be a common fault with these age Vauxhalls. Yes, i've read that there was a modified connector but we'll replace the sensors first as one had been repaired anyway.

    Hmm, have a similar problem with my Combo van, just entered an express way when the speedo had a wobbly and stopped working then came up again the ABS light came on then it stopped recording the mileage, I normally reset the mileage every time I fill up and zero the trip and have noticed it hasn't moved since.
    The ABS has been on ever since, the rings do look grubby so will clean them off but one sensor wire looks damaged so will see if the brake and accelerator trick will tell me, going to replace the sensors anyway as they are only £20.
    When I did my Driver Mechanic course we didn't have all these codes for fault finding on Centurion and Chieftain tanks we had to use common sense and work through using fault finding techniques hahaha!

      @Growlerinthebush 4 роки тому

      UPDATE - swapped out the sensor for a new one on the passenger side and found the sensor cable had been rubbing and worn through and the wire was cut. With the new fitted I'm back to normal and the odometer is working after a quick drive down to Spar to get some tinnies and the ABS light has gone out - Took me 10 minutes to sort it today.

    hey the video really helped but I ran over a pot hole and shredded by abs (the wire is litterally cut) I have bought a replacement and this video helped me figure out what was wrong to the point where I saw the cut, but I cannot disconnect the connectors with the abs, The Allen key fixture has came off fine it is the tether point into the car. How do I get it off I have tried everything :/

    • @retrorestore

      You will probably have to drill out where the allen key head was and re tap a new hole by the sound of it bud.

    I had an ABS light come on on my Corsa C, paid it no mind. ABS would kick in below 2mph then fault code and go away. Cool I thought, I'm at work all evening so I can't do anything and ABS codes are never the end of the world...
    ...Left work at 11, made it about 0.3 of a mile and the wheel fell off along with the drum. Turns out, I forgot to torque the stub axle nut (':

    Hi there i have a corsa c 1.2 and my speedo would randomly stop working if i didnt use it for like 5 days or so then when i drive and stop stationary it would start working again... went out tonight but its not working at all but my fuel, temp and rev counter all works. can anyone help?

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  7 років тому

      Apparently, there is a poor connector behind the clocks that always gives trouble. Most people give the top of the a bash as a short term fix but it is a clocks out job to repair.

      I doubt you need this help anymore but this comment might help someone else. There are a few torx 20 screws to remove, to find out which ones, google "corsa c speedo led replacement" there should be a few guides kicking around, then when you get to the multiplug, I've read that people stick a piece of paper inbetween the connector wall and the plug on the clocks to keep it stuck in. It's not majorly hard to do, 20-30 mins to disassemble if you don't know what you're doing/taking it slow + another 20-30 reassembling. While you have the clocks out you might as well put a nice red LED conversion in! Only 4 bulbs (5 if you have an auto).

    Are the sensors magnets?

    ya sound like my garage mechanic, but charges me for each thing they try to fix a problem. $900 for a distributor sensor after weeks of trying this and that first.

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  9 років тому

      Unless they plug a diagnostic program in and actually see a malfunction from a sensor, it's normally something else like it could have been in this case but just changing a sensor is not always the problem. As you said though Bri, some people just change things until they stumble on the actual fault and charge you for everything they change.Cheers

      retrorestore With my Taurus for months would drive fine but ocasionally sputter or cut out and back in again. Made me nervous driving it, and mechanics could not find a recorded fault in diagnostics. Tried new plugs, and ignition wires, borrowed Coils, borrowed comp unit, same thing. Then I went to FORD and they said it was probably the distriutor sensor at $600. $120 to verify that was the problem, an hour labor charge for a 10 min change. Hit my wallet hard.

      Madness, We don't need all these sensors and computers just to get from A to B. They brainwash people into thinking that we need these things. Back to basics is needed.
