Yamashita debut concert in the UK playing at the QEH in London.

Possibly the most underrated guitarist in world history.
I recorded many radio programs in my long ago student days, currently transferring them to CD and thought folks might be interested to hear some of them.
I don't remember him appearing on these 80s & 90s UK radio programmes more than twice, so this is all I have.
he was a young man and what we can hear is that he was really nervous, the tempi are sometimes running, but that's live performing. He showed what is possible with the guitar

It is humbling to hear Yamashita on an off night... He is human after all!!!
I was at this concert along with my fellow students. At the risk of being contentious I must say that, exciting concert though it was, on the strength of now having seen several films of Yamashita performing around the same time as this I think this was an "off night". He hurried almost everything as if he were nervous (or maybe jet lagged) and compared to, say, the Toronto recital the year before he was somewhat sloppy to say the least. I am and have always been a massive fan of Yamashita and it pained me to read the ignorant and disparaging remarks that were regularly made about him in the UK guitar press at that time. Unfortunately this concert gave them some ammo as he somewhat conformed to their view of him. Thankfully history has vindicated Yamashita as many are now performing his arrangements. (although not with the same panache) I seldom buy tickets for classical guitar gigs these days but if he ever does a Wigmore or QEH again I'll be there.
Yes, I think he is an incredible talent and shame he doesn't play over here in Europe very often. I luckily got to see him live a year or so ago in Sweden playing with his daughter. He started with the prelude from Bach cello #6 which to be honest was rather messy. Drama was lost too due to the very long breaks between each piece. His daughter looks as if she will be a major force, quite amazing already. It interesting that other players have now caught up a bit and are now playing his transcriptions, but as you say, not with quite the same abandon, although some, to me, play some sections with a stronger mellow sound.
selfTaughtGirl As Henry Amiel once said: "what amazed Talent that's the sign of Genius" Yamashita is not merely a very talented guitarrist.He is a Genius miles away from the classical notion of a Virtuoso.Every artist can have some problems while interpreting pieces on stage, and it's even more impressive the way an artist save the night( so to say) overcoming himself in the performance.
정말 탁월한 음악가입니다...전람회의그림은 편곡도 대단할뿐만 아니라 아직까지도 이곡을 야마시타 외에는 제대로 연주하는 사람이 없다는 사실이 놀랍네요...

Thorsten Bleich I've not come across those either, though I've managed to get a few CDs and a DVD through roaming the dark corners of the internet.

Was very lucky to hear him live a year or so ago, the first time after listening to his recordings for 30 years - a long wait!
