Jeff Gordon vs. Rusty Wallace: An Underrated NASCAR Classic Rivalry!

  • A lot of NASCAR fans talk about how the 90s and early 2000s were the greatest years in NASCAR because of how much NASCAR exploded with all-time high TV Ratings and perfect attendances, iconic drivers and iconic paint schemes, and most importantly, rivalries. Everybody talks about Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace vs. Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt vs. Everybody, and the list goes on!
If you ask me, Jeff Gordon and Rusty Wallace is an underrated rivalry. Yes, it was a short rivalry and it was only remembered for the Bristol "Bump and Runs" from 1997 and 2002. However, I found their short rivalry an intense one when it comes to short track racing. Here are the rememberable rivalry moments between the Blue Deuce's Rusty Wallace and Rainbow Warrior's Jeff Gordon!
    In Order Of Apperance:
    - 1997 Food City 500 at Bristol (The Bump and Run Part 1!)
    - 1998 Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond (Rusty Wallace wrecks Jeff Gordon)
    - 2001 Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond (Rusty door slams Jeff at the restart)
    - 2002 Sharpie 500 at Bristol (The Bump and Run Part 2!)

Rusty also had bad luck. Pitting is what was killing him, either taking 2 or 4 tires at the wrong time, or not pitting at the wrong time.

What sucked most about that 2002 race was Ray Evernham during the caution told Gordon to follow Rusty up through there, that Rusty knew how to get to the front then he gave him the bump and run. That was the most devastating race for me as a rusty Fan I can remember. 2 Days after that race, I moved into a New House we just bought and directly across the Street the guy had a Gordon Flag hanging in his flag pole!

Once Rusty spun Jeff out at Richmond in 98, that literally Woke up a sleeping GIANT. Jeff would go 17 weeks of top 5 finishes, and 20 consecutive top 10’s, both stand as All-Time NASCAR records as of 2021. Not to mention, he won 5 races in 8 weeks. Winning Sonoma, Pocono, his second Brickyard, Watkins Glen, the Pepsi 400,

I'd like to mention the 1999 Daytona 500. Jeff made a bold move, moving towards between the line and grass, while also trying to avoid Ricky Rudd, as he had came off of pit rode, just to pass Rusty for the lead, after that, Jeff couldn't be touched, he held off Earnhardt for 10 laps afterwards and won the race. He beat Rusty so many times. I was a fan of both, both could drive a car like nobody else, which is why in these races seen in this video and others, most of the time if Rusty was in the lead, Jeff wasn't far behind, and you were in 3rd? Boy, you have tour hands full trying to pass both of them.

The thing about this rivalry is that it was happening almost every week. Rusty would hit Gordon at some point during a race. One that really stands out was a bump Rusty gave Gordon going into turn 1 at Fontana, how Gordon saved that was unreal with the speeds they were going at the time.

Also I’d argue that Alan Bestwick is GREATEST NASCAR play by play color commentator in the history of the sport. I know it’s arguable with some of the OGs and Mike joy as well. My dream booth broadcast including pit reporters.
    Bestwick, BP, Wally,
    Dick Bergeren, Matt Yocom,
    Dave Burns, Jeanie Zelasko, &
    Dr. Jerry Punch.
Pre and post race. John Roberts, Kenny Wallace, Dale Jarrett.
Imagine that cast & crew just pumping out the good vibes. Nascar This Morning/
Nascar RACEDAY always and I MEAN ALWAYS got me excited and amped up for the race. When they made their picks it was such a build up from 9am-11am before kicking it to BIG FOX for their 30-60 min prerace show with Hammond, Meyers, & DW (in his prime).. it was all just perfect and then NASCAR VICTORY LANE was just as good a way to finish the day with tons of coverage and lots interviews. TNT/NBC had it rolling just as good as prime FOX.. the had their Countdown To Green that literally built the drivers up to be gladiators with the mini segments on the stars and contenders for that race/season. Tbh I’m glad I witnessed Nascar in the 90s-2000s as a kid. Because that was the glory days.
100k-250k fans for weekly sellout crowds, great points system (even the first chase format was solid and added the perfect amount of intensity through the season with out making it a gimmick), the GEN4 race cars raced and sounded so awesome at every single track, there was 3 1hr practices, and single car quali that took time to show each and every car, the races started at noon or if it was night 7pm, the stars were STARS and every week you’d have 2-3 midfielders battling with those stars in the front, the sponsors and paint schemes were EPIC & ICONIC, and there were also characters up and down the pits, ( fatback, Eury’s, Knaus, Slugger, Ray, Zippy, Bob Osborn, Robby Reiser, Jimmy Finning, Etc. Etc.).. But with all that said in a time where there was hardly any internet access or content. There was so much that the networks and NASCAR gave us through the week, and especially from Friday-Sunday, it was NONSTOP. Trackside Live!! How could I forget TRACKSIDE LIVE!! Honestly we had it made. If you were to tell me in 2012 that in 2022 THE CUP cars would run one 20 min practice & qualify 1 lap & then race and it would be broadcast on freaking rinky dink USA….???
I’d tell you to get the hell outta my face with that and that’s a ridiculous idea. But hey here we are. And it’s sad honestly. Hell Kyle Busch a guy with 220+ wins across the three series is possibly out of his ride because Nascar is in that bad of a place that our top guys are having to bend over backwards and approve a salary drop because the sport is tanking that damn bad. Sorry random rant but that 2002 night race gave me the chills.

As a person who doesn’t watch as much NASCAR nowadays like I used to, and got into NASCAR back in mid-09, I agree with you.
Whatever “NASCAR” this is for Modern NASCAR, it’s not THE NASCAR Motorsports we fell in love with thanks to the god awful current management and TV networking gif series and are okay with the disgraceful gimmicks for “TV purposes”. It’s saddening. I’m glad IndyCar has been my #1 for a while, and I’m glad I watch other pure racing series. Endless amount of happiness for me!
Trust me, I hate being negative and angry about how NASCAR is nowadays online, but it’s so depressing that NASCAR is still the way it is today even without Brian France. I miss being truly happy watching NASCAR and looking forward to each races with excitement. Even when I watch races I want to watch nowadays, I don’t get as excited. I just watch. The Daytona 500 (and Daytona Speedweeks in general) is the only thing that makes me truly happy in Modern NASCAR.
I miss the pure racing days of NASCAR. Even tho I hate the chase, at least the non-elimination chase format was at least fine. Way better than the disgraceful elimination gimmicky manufacture bullcrap. That’s not how racing works.
I hear ya, Austin. You’re not the only one.
