RCAF Golden Hawks Sabre Leaving Canada

  • The Canadair (F-86) Sabre saw service both in Canada and with 12 squadrons at Royal Canadian Air Force stations in Europe as part of a large NATO commitment. The most spectacular paint scheme ever to grace the already graceful lines of the Sabre was the livery of the RCAF's precision aerobatic team, the Golden Hawks. The Golden Hawks were created in 1959 to honour the 50th anniversary of powered flight in Canada and flew for five airshow seasons. The Vintage Wings of Canada Sabre continues to wear the same metallic gold paint scheme that was used to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada throughout 2009.
Here you will see ''Hawk One'' leaving her nest at the Vintage Wings of Canada Hangar in Gatineau headed for her new home in Alabama

And many kudos to the Vintage Wings of Canada who took this aircraft in their arms, so to speak, and lovingly restored it to a gorgeous copy of one of the famous, Golden Hawks. They maintained this machine meticulously and carefully, and poured thousands of work hours to keep this bird in pristine condition.

Thank you Jack. We have a model airplane club and it's named the Golden Hawks Model Aircraft Club.
When I asked why Golden Hawks,, they didn't know. And their logo was the head of an American Bald Eagle,,, "because it looks snazzy". Oh the humanity.
So when I tell them of the history of OUR beloved Golden Hawks, they look at me with a blank look as if I'm from Mars. First economy seat, I'm getting a ticket for the Red Planet. Elon Musk will be our benign King.

The Golden Hawk One is a beautiful piece of Canadian history, something as Canadians we can be proud of. I'm going to assume the new owner is well aware of what he has in his possession, and will treat it with the kind of love and respect it deserves.

I can't help but wonder why it was sold? For the money I'm sure, but surely, we as a country are rich enough to own and maintain such a treasure with having to sell it? To me, it's unbelievable really.

I remember the first time I saw the Golden Hawks. It was at the Western Fair grounds of London Ontario in the early 60's when I was 9 or 10. They were mesmerizing especially when the two solo planes flew towards each other at high speed and passed belly to belly. I saw them two more times before they disbanded. Once was at the old Centralia air base and the other at the CNE airshow where the USAF Thunderbirds with their F 100 Super Sabres also performed. I remember the Super Sabers being much louder and maybe a little faster but I much preferred the Golden Hawks who seemed (to me anyway at that age) more precise and graceful in their maneuvers. But maybe I was just being a proud Canadian.

I still remember the display upstairs in the Automotive building Just off Lakeshore Blvd. The F-86 and the British Vampire were side by side. The Vampire seemed tiny . My Father Flew the F-86 Sabre Jets over Korea and I heard him say many times, for its day it had no equal in a dogfight. My Father was credited with shooting down Russian Made Migs that were in fact flown by Russian Pilots (not Chinese or Korean)and never once getting shot down himself...His plane took many hits but its toughness kept it flying and My Father Alive over the skies of Korea. Speaking as an American I am so glad to see her come home. But....speaking as someone who really appreciates this particular Jet Fighter, it seems only right that she stay in the hands of the people who took such fantastic care of her. I only hope the Canadian Govt. Gets full credit for her care and that she is treated with equal reverence here in the United States.

Why was it sold and where is it going... the Canadian government should have never let this piece of Canadian aviation history leave the country. should have bought it and sent it to a different museum. In 2009 a classic Canadair Sabre Mk 5, formerly RCAF serial 23314, was flown in to the Vintage Wings of Canada (VWOC) complex at Gatineau, Quebec, in September 2007, for a unique opportunity. There it was stripped, inspected, and refitted by the dedicated staff for its next important task, that of being the flagship for the anniversary year, painted in the glorious metallic gold livery of the legendary precision aerobatics team, the Golden Hawks. Officially designated “Hawk One”, and flying with the Centennial Heritage Flight, this aircraft flew with the famed Snowbirds team around the country, celebrating our proud Canadian flying heritage. Its first official performance, flown by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, was at Baddeck, Nova Scotia, in February 2009, celebrating the centennial of the flight of the Aerial Experiment Association’s Silver Dart.
    Below are listed some of the many Canadair Sabre Mk 5 and Mk 6 aircraft that were assigned and participated with the Golden Hawks’ teams over the years. Included here also are some of the aircraft from the Sabre No. 1(F) OTU, based at RCAF Station Chatham, used specifically for the formation and aerobatics training of many of the selected Golden Hawks’ pilots. These Sabres bore the RCAF serial numbers: 23001, 23034, 23037, 23042, 23043, 23066, 23073, 23079, 23080, 23083, 23096, 23100, 23129, 23133, 23135, 23142, 23164, 23195, 23202, 23205, 23206, 23208, 23215, 23227, 23259, 23276, 23279, 23301, 23309, 23313, 23314, 23315, 23320, 23330, 23339, 23347, 23351, 23353, 23355, 23358, 23359, 23410, 23424, 23426, 23433, 23435, 23454, 23457, 23465, 23470, 23485, 23487, 23510, 23551, 23600, 23636, 23641, 23649, 23651.

There are quite a lot of Sabres, no panic, but it has an astonishing turning circle and superb ground-attack capabilities. In the Korean War South African pilots flying Yankee marked Sabres scored devestating kills against Chinese and Soviet Mig-copies, we're talking Red Baron tallies but the ground-war was a stalemate. Bizarrely the English were still testing, and killing test pilots, in turboprop Supermarines like the propellor had a future! According to a relative when you thought a Sabre had had enough it was just turning to come back and really stuff the Commies up.

@@gervaisfillion9417 "Decades?" So a 1954 design was right up there with the F-14, F-15, both of which were being tested before the end on the Vietnam war? There were too many advanced designs at the time. F-106 was equivalent, the prototype F-107 and the XF8U-3 Super Crusader III were superior and they met the same fate as the Arrow. If you decide to reply with the points where I'm wrong, be sure to add the points where I'm right. It's easy enough to see for yourself.

Thanks for selling off our aviation heritage. And for those on here that are saying its just an American plane "going home", they are full of shit. Built and Re-Designed in Canada, and 100% Canadian property. So if you think all aircraft just need to "go home"to where they were respectively designed, then the Planes of Fame Aviation Museum and folks like Kermit Week's might have a bone to pick with you. This aircraft is unique and a testament to one of the greatest air display teams of the era. To see it with another USAF paint job like all the others still flying is a stupid move by an even stupider government.

"The CF-100 ( The Canuck or Clunk ) was the only Canadian-designed fighter to enter mass production, serving primarily with the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Armed Forces and also in small numbers in Belgium." wikipedia Lets not tell the world we are insecure by whining without doing our homework. After that maybe a weensy whimper from us.
As to the Arrow, its a mighty competitive world out there and at the time Canada had a tiny population to support such an expensive hobby as military jet design and manufacture. Sometimes you chase the dream and sometimes you have to look at the chequing account and be realistic.

and sometimes the bully next door tells you dump the incredible plane you just designed and then turns its sights on the UK where they did the exact same thing. The Arrow would still have amazing performance today, but the Americans forced their military industrial complex on everyone. At least the engineers from the project went to NASA to put a man on the moon.
